  • WNBC 66 New York - Howard Stern - July 4 1983.
This air check is from Howard's early days in New York at WNBC. Howard was at the station for less than a year, but was already shaking things up. You'll hear Howard's feature, Dial-A-Date, and you'll hear him talk to child actor, Glenn Scarpelli. (who today owns a TV station in Sedona, AZ)
Back in the 1980s, when many radio stations playing music on AM were quickly dying, as music radio listeners had migrated to FM, New York’s 66 WNBC was one of the stations, which continued to play music and have decent ratings. The secret for WNBC was doing high personality radio, along with the music, on the adult leaning Top 40 station..
Some of the high personalty names on WNBC included Don Imus, Soupy Sales, Alan Colmes, Joey Reynolds, Bill Grundfest, Wolfman Jack, and of course Howard Stern.
Stern was on WNBC for only 3 years, but during that time, he created must listen radio for many New Yorkers on their drive home. Stern & his antics became very popular in afternoon drive, but throughout his three years at WNBC, Stern had many battles with WNBC management and other jocks at the station, specifically Don Imus and program director Kevin Metheny, whom Stern nicknamed "Pig Virus". Many of these conflicts were dramatized in Stern's autobiographical book and film Private Parts.
On September 30, 1985, Howard Stern was abruptly fired from WNBC, supposedly due to pressure from NBC corporate. After some time on the beach, Howard took over the afternoon show on 92.3 K-Rock WXRK, eventually moving to mornings, where he spent the next 19 years.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008!
One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well.
You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!

Early 2000s he was at his peak maybe 1998 to 2012 but I love the earlier stuff to cause I've heard everything else. Buuuut howard hit his peak after he moved to satellite and could finally speak freely the way he wanted to his whole career. THAT'S when he hit his stride.

I was only around for his late 90s K-Rock run. He was in the game for a long time prior to that. Now look where he is.

Amazing that Glenn Scarpelli was Howard's biggest regular celebrity guest at one point (with Steve Rossi)

Howard Stern grew into his prime in 1983. When he joined WXRK 92.3 FM, Howard grew up to be the "shock jock."

HS working on a holiday. WTF? Was on leave from US Army, stationed in West Germany. HS probably hasn't worked on July 4 since '83.

I didn't think I had to. I think everybody alive knew that he went to Sirius. But not everyone listening today knew he worked at WNBC. Some of his current listeners were not alive back then.

you can hear the stress in howard's voice
listen to his dc stuff or watch his man on the street stuff in dc and then compare it to these cuts
his voice is almost up a full octave
then listen to when he starts on krock and his voice is back to normal
they really made him insane at nbc
i was listening to howard yesterday and he was talking about the state or radio and he really has no self awareness as to how he helped to push for the corporate takeover of the medium

Thanks for posting! For the record, Stern called Mctheney " pig vomit". Pig Virus was a band who played with Stern during his short lived club engagements. Stern changed the name in the film.

I thought He called him Pig Virus on the air. I never heard Pig Vomit until the movie. I even have airchecks where he refers to Metheny as Pig Virus.
