The audio quality here can do nothing to diminish Manuel Barrueco's amazing gifts. Beautiful rubato, fantastic technique and another wonderful glimpse into Manuel's dedication and supreme reverence to J. S. Bach and the majestic instrument he holds.

Wow. Just wow. One of the great masters of guitar and to have this performed flawlessly live on television says so much.

I guess that's the best I ever heard/seen that played live on guitar (despite poor audio quality). Thank you for posting!

macleod41069 no offence but I disagree, the JW version is superior to this in at least 3 key musical points: 1 interpretation (name one interpretation technique he employs in this video) 2 tempo vs harmonic sentiment - this is too quick (fantastic technically but lacking understanding of the gravity in which Bach likely wrote this work). 3 performance skill (he looks like he is asleep; how are we supposed to connect to the death of Bach's first wife when a robot plays the music?)
Don't get me wrong he is technically amazing but I believe you've been dazzled.

@@soundknight 3rd point is pointless. How he looks is completely irrelevant, he's absolutely focused!

That line at like 410 is the best interpretation of this part I've ever heard and I'm an unapologetic segovia admirer. I'm going to have to adapt that fingering and phrasing to my chaconne its just so amazing. So much better than the somewhat screeching high runs in the segovia arrangement. Incredible :)

To me, even though played extremely well here by Manuel, I found this climactic passage of this performance you are referring to to be a disappointment played down an octave. In fact, this particular passage in most performances is disappointing to me...even with violinists. To me Segovia nailed it! I love the way Segovia emphasizes that climactic high note, almost as if it is a downbeat (which it actually is not), emphasizing that this is the true climax of the Chaconne. Most players just pass through that climactic high note as if it's just another note. Plus, it is interesting to note that in later recordings maestro Barrueco plays this passage up an octave. While I do find the lower octave arrangement interesting, I think ultimately it should be plaved Up! You mention Screeching high notes...Screeching? Really?

I remember my 1st Master Class with Manuel. 1976 I was learning an Allemande from 2nd Lute Suite. Bach is very difficult to perform. This Chaconne is great however; I will say that Segovia paved the way for New Repertoire with his transcriptions of JS BACH. I think Manuels performance is technically perfect. I wish that I could find the JOSE' TOMAS bach transcriptions I lost mine during a move.

    Technique 9.7/10
    Performance 2/10
    Musicianship 7/10
    Interpretation 4.5/10
Sense of majesty around the greatest work ever written 3/10
Shoe size / probably 11's UK.
I like some of Bach I have on a CD but this was treated just a quick and lifeless scale run.
BTW what's the best version you've heard? Guitar violin or symphonic or big band no matter which.

      Brian Cullen
      On guitar, Segovia ;)
Jokes aside, probably Russell, as is the case with almost all things Baroque. He is the greatest transcriber alive .
On violin, Julia Fischer, although I have a lot of affection for Hahn's performance. I'm always surprised by how good her Bach is.

Great performance which suffers from being performed on a Spanish Instrument, poor sustain and limited polyphony which Bach requires
