Dude watches his dad get beaten to a pulp right in front of him, and not only is he treated as a joke while his father's killer is one of the most beloved characters in the franchise, his only canonical win against Sagat was because he let Dan win out of pity (and realizing Dan's hate of him mirrored Sagat's hate of Ryu, but that's more for Sagat's development than Dan)
Origin story aside (though for that, see the reply by AT Productions), Sagat's reason for killing his Father was (at least in the past) due to how, in an unsanctioned fight on the streets, Dan's father took Sagat's eye during the fight, prompting Sagat to, in a fit of (half-)blind rage, utterly destroy his Father out of revenge. Murder isn't an (appropriate) answer, but the event was so scarring for young Dan that he only saw it as "He killed Father", rather than remember the reason, or even care to consider it.
The UDON comics handled the grudge match way better than in the game's lore. Rather than Sagat letting Dan win in secret, Sagat surrenders to Dan (after Sagat almost relapsed back to his violent ways during their fight) out of guilt for what he did to Dan's father and willingly gives Dan a chance to kill him with a point-blank Gadouken. Instead, Dan chooses to walk away because he realized that what he wanted wasn't revenge... he just wanted his dad back.

Way I heard it was that Go Hibiki was a straight-up asshole who challenged "The King of Muai Thai" to show his kids the power of Saikyo-style. Sagat was winning, though not by much. Not wanting to lose, he resorted to cheating by damaging and removing Sagat's eye, before Sagat was consumed with rage, killing Go Hibiki in an act of revenge. I think later on in the timeline, they brought the idea of Sagat's rage being a part of his character, particularly with the SFII animated movie (Ryu giving him his scar, Sagat rushing towards him after in a rage), and most recently in his story for SFV where he learns of the Satsui no Hado in his story mode... That last part might be misremembered, though. Even the Animated Movie-bit might be; It's been a while.

OR my brain's just shutting down and I need sleep. I don't even know anymore. Started making sense, think it derailed.

I play fairly good in tekken and soulcalibur but in sfv I know the combos but I fall to enemy traps easily. It's super awesome game but I can't adapt very good. Max is really fun to watch in sfv!

Kind of curious for fans of fighting games: What fighting game (or games) would you like to see Max play even once? For me it’d be Arcana Heart (I know the character designs are somewhat hard to look at but it’s really fun gameplay wise and has a lot of options through the arcana system), Sonic Smackdown (not the best made game as it reuses a lot from MvC but I thinks there’s some passion behind it and they could use some attention) and Street fighter IV: Championship Edition aka the mobile version of SF4 (just for the lols). Also I kind of wish he’d play Blazblue Chronophantasma extend due to being able to play as all the unlimited characters
