  • I pulled the factory stock race engine out of our Crate Racing USA Street Stock Chassis and we are doing a full tear down. In this episode we are figuring out if this circle track race engine can be rebuilt again or not to be run in our leaf spring camaro driven by our new rookie racer Rachel!

    I run a limited modified. Our engines are pretty much the same engine rules as a factory stock besides the camshaft and a few other small things. I finally got my engine ready last week. I freshened up the rotating assembly, and installed a new hydraulic speedway camshaft.

    What kind and weight of oil?

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use Valvoline Vr1 in most of my engines (best priced high zinc racing oil I have available locally)
      as far as weight, as long as I am in the 0.0025" to 0.0035" range on oil clearance I run 20w-50.
      if I have an engine that is tighter on clearance I will drop that weight if I need to.

    Hey I was curious do you run your welder on 110 or 220? I have same one and couldn't tell in your videos

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  ปีที่แล้ว

      220 at all times Doug. Heres where I am typically at on setup for mig on tubing work: I run 75/25 mix on my gas and use 0.035" wire. I usually stay around 200 inches a minute and from 17.8 to 18.2 on voltage (varying depending on tube thickness and conditions). I think I am running about 3 seconds of post flow as well and usually keep my flow rate down around 10 inches as long as the doors are closed but in the summer with a fan on I will turn it up at times if I am blowing my coverage off from air movement in the shop.
      Hope this helps!

    If you have to ridge ream it needs bored

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree Jim. Speed pro pistons, cast crank, and 5140 rods in this block that was already 0.060" over means there wasn't much value there. I was either going to do one of two things: buy rings and bearings and open her up to about 4.063 or just scrap it all. In this case I felt it was worth it to let er eat for a couple more seasons. But make no mistake, we'll run her till she let's the smoke out this time because there is nothing left to get out of her after this 😉

    • @jimmattingly4234

    I've always heard that its best to match up your intake specs with your cam specs. Is that a myth or does it really matter?

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is NOT a myth. When I consulted with Mike Jones and ordered a cam, he was very specific that I not use a victor series intake and instead change to the victor junior with a smaller port volume.

    If the bolts are not stretched, do you think they'll be ok?

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  ปีที่แล้ว

      When it comes to stock head bolts I like to just grab new ones. I have no issue reusing ARP studs and bolts and I am doing that on my other build. Some people reuse stock bolts many times, I don't but if none of your old bolts show to be over stretched then it should be fine. But how do you know for sure none of the old bolts are over stretched. . . . I just don't risk it.

    So just curious why do you replace oil pump, if the car is putting 70psi ? We are refreshing our engine the same way.

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  ปีที่แล้ว

      Call me paranoid but I feel like if I skip that $35 melling pump, Murphy's law will kick in and bite me dead on the tail. I have inspected and reused many many pumps but have just always replaced them in my race engines. Your right though, the old pump was mint.

  • @danamcintyre3565

    Don't take much wear if you have great filling fingers and being very mindful of what you have to catch that wear in the block.

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Boy its close and truthfully I cannot say 100% this block is good to go until we have honed, prepped, and measured all 8 cyclinders. Trying to get started on that this weekend and hope it goes well.

    If your going to get a new carb for that car then get one from TCC carbs. I have run a few different carbs and I promise there’s night and day difference. Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Oklahoma cars I know love TCC carbs. Your racing against them and so was I and try not to follow the leader I try to beat them but after 6 different carbs I learned they already found the best one. Get a stage 2 if your rules allow it. Best of luck and can’t wait to see you in the front.

    I like the engine stuff, keep up the videos! any reasoning for such a wide lobe separation on the camshaft? You rarely see circle track engines over a 107 108 LSA, I seen some people use wide LSA on heavy duration engines like 250 @50 and up on flat tappet but I was just curious your thinkin on it

    • @DIRTRACELIFE
      @DIRTRACELIFE  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback bud, the wide lobe separation is a feature you'll see often on cams that need to meet a vacuum rule. When I went with this cam I was running some classes where there was a 16" min vacuum at 1000 rpm rule. You're gona pull hard off the corner with a little wider separation but it dang sure hurts you up on the top end. It's all a balancing act :)

I know you ran a lot at Camden a lot so just letting it be known they changed the rules last year I believe where you don’t have to run a hydraulic cam anymore and still the 16” vacuum rule I believe. @@DIRTRACELIFE I haven't ran a vacuum rule.
      But I'd be interested to see what a 108 lca with less duration (same overlap) would do on the dyno (that is a standard stroke right? if 383 then 106). Probably could get a little more lift too if you can run a solid and a more agressive lobe.
      My guess would be more power nearly everywhere in the usable rpm range, perhaps enough to matter but untested (know it works without a vacuum rule).
      Can be a thing down the line after she gets seat time.
