Hey I’m commenting on this 8 year old thread to say I just pulled my 2002 tundra rack because I had a leak right where the spline goes from the rack, into the steering column.
Every video I watched only showed a rack replacement.
I removed the rack (and the tie rod ends, I didn’t want to have to deal with counting them off)
I was able to remove the housing around where the spline goes in and pop out the old seal with a socket, there is a roller bearing on top of it (made in the USA which is odd for a Toyota part).
Sure enough that fixed my leak.
I know yours was leaking in a different spot but maybe this comment will help someone.
Shoulda woulda coulda make a video but I was busy making sure I had a truck to drive to work.
Edit: I used the Sunoso or whatever kit, it came with the seal I needed.
I’m pretty sure it has seals, wipers, and o rings for everything.

This video is a great help. Mine is leaking in the exact same spot. It looks like mine is coming from under the clamp as well. Seems to me that getting a new rack is the best solution. Very informative video thanks for the help.

Thanks for taking the time and patience to show us this. I have the same issue going on. Just gotta see if there is rust on the rack. If there is a new one will go in. Thanks again.

Mustie, probably shouldn't put a rebuilt rack in,I did that on my subaru, and it was worse than the one i took out.I ended up with a new one ,what a disappointment that was ,lots of work to get it in and out twice. good luck.

That's interesting, I have an '06 and that will be something to take a look at. I'm anxiously awaiting part II to hear the rest of the story. Good video!

That seal may have been leaking at that crack in the green stuff BUT at 16:06 I got a quick glimpse of a seam in that green part just under your index finger! It is barely noticeable but it's there. I don't think I've actually heard of anyone repairing a steering rack before, hope it lasts a while for you. Much easier and cheaper than replacing the whole rack.

MISTERComaToes not cheaper, and not easier. If you don't have to take the rack out your in better shape.

I watched part 2 first so I could get some tips on what I will have to do in a few months I've got serious rust on my steering rack and it's just a matter of time. thanks for posting these videos now I know I don't have to take the airbag out.

All in all, great vid bro!
I don't drive a Tundra but I have 05' Chevy Colorado with a leak on the passenger side of the steering rack. Just ordered up the ac delco repair o-ring kit. Planning on performing the install soon.
    Thx for the vid!

This was informative - was looking for rack seals that have been able to be replaced without removing the whole rack as one of my seals on a different vehicle has a leak on the driver side. Got the seal kit and see it has a snap ring holding it in with what seems like the seal within that - hoping it can be pushed out with fluid as well.

Good TRIED MUSTIE1 I think that a little bit of patience, and a little bit of welding will cure and $ave "the rack" gotta love those vw front ends.......

I put seal sweller in mine and it swelled up the seal and it quit leaking. works good now for a long while. If it starts leaking again just put more seal sweller in it. I dont think seal sweller would work on that crack though. Some JB weld might work. Welding it may crack that cast iron. All that salt they put on the roads keeps the car dealers rich.

+mustie1 Yeah I see now that is was rusted out sorry. That was exspenesive. but you got it fixed. I gotta put a throw out bearing in my ranger fun stuff not really. The new 99 rangers throw out bearing suck.

Had same problem. But replaced with aftermarket. That worked for 4-5years, now leak on that one from drivers side. Can drivers side seal be replaced? Looks different

Now that sucks. Snowbelt road treatments kill another car. I'm curious to see if you can repair it rather than replace. Maybe weld or braze a thin sleeve over the punky area?

Is that simply a fluid reservoir? If it is then I can't see why it wouldn't but, we will see! I wouldn't open that hole up at all though just wire wheel any rust around the hole and have at her! Maybe put a hunk of copper up against the hole on the inside, just a thought.

Hi Mustie. I have the same truck with the same seal leaking. The retaining wire you pulled out did you have to walk it out while rotating the retainer or does it pull out ? It was kind of hard to see it in the video.

Pity you havnt got a few inches of pipe you could slide over it and weld both ends :-(
Perhaps a side section of a pipe welded over the mess, not an easy fix, shame :-(
