How A Bait Tank Works (And Did I Fix This One?)

  • Bait tanks are great for keeping Shad alive!
    In this video I show how a Bait tank works and how I modded this one to work with less water. Bait tanks in general have two issues that happen with them. One of the issues is the need to run with the tank completely full (and even spilling over in some cases). The other is with the bilge pumps burning out. I think I fixed one of these issues? I did forget to mention salt is needed to keep shad good for days!

    Aquarium pumps run continuously with few issues. Maybe you can convert one to DC if AC isn’t available

      That was something I was thinking about doing someday. Bait tanks are so niche there really isn't any movement away from bilge pumps.

    Seems you could use a sock filter and make the standpipe even shorter. That’s what I’m going to try. Thoughts?

      That is possible! Some of the other types of bait tanks use sock filters.

      @@TNRVG - well with my sock filter modification I can run my new 50 gallon Creek Bait Tank with 15 gallons of water all day. Figuring for sloshing during trailering and while underway I’ll put in around 17 - 20 to be safe.
      I also added a standpipe coming off the top with a valve and now I can use my pump to drain the tank for room for fresh water or for storage.
      Really appreciate your video as it spawned ideas for me!

    Well you just showed me my idea for a bait tank for the back of my truck cause I don't have a boat and if I did it would be an aluminum boat for the river

    I have used 24 volt pumps for years!!
    Half the amp draw. Less heat, last longer
    Same brands just search for 24 volt try it

    Our tanks are adjustable on water levels and we tell customers about adjusting standpipe if not wanting to get the full capacity out of it. How is our baittank treating you? Have a good one billy!

    I bet you could come up with a better bait tank for your boat than that. All I'm saying is it seems like the business end of that bait tank is poorly designed it should not give you trouble better design is needed thanks for the video Billy good luck

      Mel's has a better design although its the same concept. I've actually been to his shop too. This is a borrowed bait tank that I may not even use lol! I just wanted to show how they work.

      Fill it up, and I figure it works just fine.
      I have to presume that you don't want the added weight of the full tank so you modified it to function at a lower level.
      You gave me an idea, though.
      I'm going to cut a shorter length of pvc and leave it loose in the filter compartment for those instances where I don't want to run a full tank of water. I can swap it out.

    You do not have enough water in the bait side you have to learn how to adjust the filter side Run the least amount of water on filter side as you can then mark the bait side with a piece of tape then Fill up the bait Side and you’ll always be perfect

    • @TNRVG
      @TNRVG  ปีที่แล้ว

      It fills to the pipe in the filter. For it to work right you have to fill it to the brim when its in original configuration. If you want to run it like a Mel's (the best there is) you have to make the stem pipe shorter like I did in this video. It does only use a part of the filter. Just simply flip it when dirty.

    that tank only needs a 360gph pump, why would you put a 500+ gph pump on that thing it'll beat the bait up to death with the current, if you want to lower the water level use a sock filter with a shorter pvc pipe..

    • @TNRVG
      @TNRVG  ปีที่แล้ว

      It actually didn't beat the bait to death. It works great and continues to keep threadfins alive for days.

      I use that exact tank, 20 gallon. Replaced the pump with a 500, no issues keeping blueback herring alive.
