  • On 14 February 2018, two friends and I set out on a 15 hour mission to summit Mitre Peak (1,692m, 5,551ft) in Milford Sound, New Zealand in a day.
    Disclaimer: 5th class climbing and 4th class scrambling are dangerous. By sharing our epic, personal adventure, I am not recommending or encouraging anyone to do this hike/ascent.
    Shoutout to ASKE and JARED.
    Filmed on iPhone 6s Plus and GoPro Hero 5 Black.
    Edited in iMovie.

    Ain't it beautiful to be young, fit, and crazy? Reminds me of own youth and the fun we used to have scrambling up and down challenging peaks, but then we all got older and could never do it again. Congratulations on such a spectacular ascent and showing the rest of the world what a magnificent natural wonder New Zealand and Milford Sound is.

    Major props to the 3 of you for getting this tough peak. Years ago I had planned to climb it but eventually ruled it out as being too involved. Coming all the way from Seattle, I did manage to get a bunch of peaks on the south island, but this was not one of them. Thanks for the video and showing me what it's like up there.

    Geesh. I read son of Beansprout's account of his climb and had no idea what an ordeal it was. We've kayaked it and looked up there wondering what it'd be like to climb it, now I know it's not to be taken lightly. I'm ok with heights but my heart was in my mouth in places, the scale of everything is just huge in there. A great day out, well done you guys.

    Thank you...that was lovely and remarkable. You have taken me back 50 years to when I went up Sabyinyo which has 3 ascending peaks with major downs between them. I've just read some trip advisor accounts of that climb and realised for the first time in my rubbish life that I must have been quite fit around then....... so thanks again for shining that memory for me.

    • @jospeterfreyens7519
      @jospeterfreyens7519 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      climbed Sabinyo 38 years ago...similar experience to Mitre; first lots of pulling on branches and roots and then knife-edge ridges and big drops higher up to get to the Central peak. They closed the peak (Sabyinyo) after an accident a few years later. As far as I know it's remained closed ever since.

Crib Goch loads of times. I'd manage Mitre peak on a day like this. Not totally sure if my Wife would like it. Quite exposed in a few places, with hefty drops. One slip and Strawberry Jam indeed. almost 50 years ago I climbed Cook Malte Brun Dixon and the Footstool but these seemed a lot easier than Mitre Peak.Noticed that you never once roped up I guess that was to save weight and time, but meant no abseils on the descent. Envious of you it was on my daydreaming list of climbs together with Mt.Tutoko. Michael Bell Bristol England 19th of August 2023.

    So I just came across this today, like many I couldn't quite believe it. And how were you so chilled out Tamsin, you were handling it like it ain't no thang! Massive factor having the weather on your side like that as well. I've done some sketchy climbs myself but nothing of this magnitude in one day. I also have a huge fear of being precariously close to cliff faces so I don't actually know whether I could physically do this even though I may be fit enough but I would be keen to try it. Some of those crossings were insane - camera perspective aside. My palms were drenched just watching this so it doesn't bode well for gripping on smooth rocks! Absolutely epic to watch. A performance that's up there with the pro's. Also something you will remember for the rest of your life.
