    Travis’ reaction to Jason talking about having a time out called for him because he was so exhausted feels like Jason has never shared that story with him before.
    Just goes to show that even being close brothers, football is so demanding of your time.

      I remember an interview Cam did after he got let go by the Panthers the 2nd time. He was with his dad giving his side of the story and he said something to the effect of "this the first time I've sat down with my pops in September since I left for college!"

    In a lot of sports, the goal is to create "comfort" in your performance conditions. In running, we'd do shorter and faster, and longer and slower, so that race distance and pace feels right and mentally isn't the slog of the long hour+ runs. In basketball, you see a lot of players "overloading", dribbling 2 balls while balancing on something or juggling... it's crazy how you can push yourself. A long drive drill, I can't imagine how hard that is for linemen who are wrestling EVERY play vs skill players just running freely...

  • @Redmenace96
    @Redmenace96 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    With all the jargon, I'm not sure the majority of fans get what they are describing. I played and coached at the college level. The modern theory is that you don't need to practice for long periods. It is counter-productive (all apologies to Lombardi and Bear Bryant). You need intense, and short, periods of physical effort and mental effort. That is the game.
    It was good to see two highly productive players admit that it was critical training, and not just bitch about the pain.

    My freshman year, our coach had a pursuit drill that he would do early on during practices. The entire defense would be out on the field, and he would have us do UpDowns while running in place, then when he was reasonably sure we were gassed, he’d huck the football towards one of the corners of the field, and a wide receiver would sprint down that sideline. The entire defense would have to touch him, even if that meant running from the backside all the way to the end zone.
    Everyone got a turn, and usually we’d do three or four circuits of this. By the time the ones were running back to the line, the twos were headed on their pursuit, and the threes were taking their place for the drill. There was very little downtime, and it was exhausting.
    His offense was incredibly simple. Halfback dive left, halfback dive right, counter left, counter right. We didn’t punt, and we had a tight end pop pass audible if they stacked the box. The part that wasn’t simple was we were always in hurry up. It was the same four plays on the same down, so the offense always knew what play was being run.
    We weren’t the biggest team, nor were we the strongest team. But we went undefeated my freshman year, because we were still fresh in the third quarter while every opponent was sucking wind.
    We knew how hard practice was while we were winning, we were terrified of how bad it would get if we lost.
    Right before my senior year our head coach stepped down, and the entire senior class said they wanted our freshman football coach to step up. Sadly he wasn’t offered the spot and we went 3-7.
    A couple years after I graduated that same freshman football coach got busted for cocaine and some puzzle pieces started to line up. I still would have accepted the abuse if it meant we’d have gone undefeated.

    Perpetually disappointed Chargers fan here. The first time the Chargers played the Chiefs last season, the team had one of those long 10+ play drives that ended with a goal line interception because Donald Parham was so fucking tired that he basically didn't even run his route and Herbert tried to throw it to him. I remember him motioning to the sideline as if he wanted to sub out right after the previous play too. It was a close ass game.
    Practicing like what Reid has his players do seems pretty important

      I agree. People like to act like it’s easy and oh they get paid millions to play a kids game but it couldn’t be further from easy both physically and mentally. It is grueling and all the stuff they have to know about the playbook and all that I mean it’s a lot. Plus they gotta travel all over the country and even outta the country to like Germany for those international games sometimes so there are weeks when they barely see family. Plus injuries that regular people don’t have to worry about, it’s tough. They get paid the amounts they do because they are doing a job few people can do it’s as simple as that
