is there a way you can put a switch at the input to turn the board on/off? If you just solder this onto a battery (Laptop battery pack) this circuit will remain on continuously and drain the battery

Can you describe what components you need for this project. It is hard to find if your not an electronic.
Use diffused LEDs for direct viewing. It's easier on your eyes and widens the effective viewing angle.
