Hat alternative: Cowboy hat that grants +1 Perception: Reward upon completion of quest 'All Halcyon in a Day'. Once there enter the Bureau of Exploration and speak to Alonzo who will grant the quest.

As soon as you started talking about the gunslinger just wanting freedom I immediately thought of Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly. Backstory actually fits fairly nicely with that comparison, though a Mal gunslinger would probably be the one with a few close companions along for the ride.
I based a shotgun character off this build and love it. Penetrator perk works really well with the sawed off because if you hit with at least 10 of the 12 pellets, you apply the max armor debuff with one shot - in case they somehow survived the 12 pellets to the face to begin with. Using the black wide brimmed hat from Bronson and the anti-riot gear make a nice western-y vibe imo. Also the yellow in the armor goes well with the yellow in the sawed-off.

Most fun build in the game imo. Thanks Fudge. I would like to point out for your hat you can get the explorers hat from the guy behind the desk at the tourist center in Byzantium and that gives you plus 1 perception. Since you started with 3 points in perception with this build you start with 35% weak spot/head shot damage but this item will bring it up to 50%. Apologies if I'm slightly off on the numbers, but it's a huge boost either way.

There was a drifter passing through that little valley, see he had promised he was coming back to town. They didn't know him by his face or by the gun around his waist, but he come back to burn that town to the ground
Thanks for the build, i'm still level 11 but it slowly starts to click. The burst pistol with elec mod is great against robots, and i picked a magnum looking gun for its raw damage, and also to see if those space punks feel lucky :D
crit builds are fun. i made, or kinda just lucked into it on my first playthough, a crit build that used the plasma rifle. pretty typical to have each hit do 1-3k damage. usually in the high 2000s, one shots everything on normal difficulty. hard was a breeze.
There is a quest later on in the bureau of exploration, that rewards a unique cowboy hat that gives +1 to perception that might go good with the aesthetic and benefit the play style.

"Don't pretend you'll be asking questions later, corpses don't speak all too well." This is why I like to play Dungeons & Dragons. I was like, "I'm an enchantment wizard, I could MAKE HIM speak!" So our cleric reanimated him for a few minutes and we were able to get a few answers out of him anyway.
I really prefer these types of build videos compared to the fallout 4 build videos. I really appreciate getting the gameplay essentials done first then the creative backstory.
You could also use the "Certified explorers hat" that you get from the bureau of exploration quest, adds +1 perception making you do +50% weak spot dmg vs 35%
