  • This pulsar lies near the centre of the Vela supernova remnant, which is the debris of the explosion of a massive star about 10,000 years ago. The pulsar is the collapsed core of this star, rotating with a period of 89 milliseconds or about 11 times a second.

    The pulsar is not actually creating sound, as sound cannot travel in a vacuum. The sounds are the pulsar's radiation pulsations that hit Earth, and are being detected and converted into sound waves.

      Alfederate Not technically correct. Sound is just a wave of something traveling through a medium. Space is a medium, and therefore, sound can travel through it. Just not sound that humans can hear.

    If I recall what I learned in my astronomy class correctly, pulsars spin so fast because they have retracted. It's the same principle as when you ride one of those things in the playground that spin horizontally. If you learn back as you start to spin, then pull yourself closer to the center once you're already spinning, you'll spin even faster the further you pull yourself in. I could be wrong though, so if someone is more knowledgeable than me, please correct me.

    For those of you quoting the Qur'an as scientific evidence, let's not forget it also states that fresh water will not mix with salt water, the moon is in the center of the universe, and that the sky is a ceiling that can fall on us.

    • @abdullasarmad
      @abdullasarmad 10 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      First its two seas Quran 55:19 and 55:20 and Google "two seas that do not mix" for more info. please where in quran does it say that the moon is the center of the universe ? and the sky is LIKE a ceiling which is referring that one day the planets will collide with each other, which i think is the opposite of the big bang and with all due respect but these are some weak points man, i mean have you ever red the quran before?! please check your points and thank you for reading

    • @abdullasarmad
      @abdullasarmad 10 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      J MAC Well the moon part, if you read it in Arabic it says فيهن which means therein,not necessarily means midst which also means that the moon is in the 7 heavens which is the universe and beyond and the interesting part in this verse is that it says that the moon have a reflected light and the sun have its own light like a burning lamp, now we know that this scientifically true. as for the second part, am not sure whats your point but if you mean that its not true because the stars are far away then your point is invalid because it said the nearest heaven and there are seven heavens so we don't know exactly where does the nearest heaven end and in Arabic it said كواكب which also doesn't necessarily mean stars it also means planets and now we also know that the planets are also beautiful :). For the second part,i don't see anything wrong with it. It clearly means that there is earthquakes which refers to the part of earth swallowing them and pieces of sky falling which means meteors. For the last part it never said it was permanent, it just said that there is a barrier (force holding them away from each other, therefore not mixing with each other) and if you read the very next verse it says "فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ" which means "So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?". If you have any doubts or questions then please go and ask people who professionalize in these subjects, am sure they will be glad to discuss it with you, am also glad to discuss with you but its just that am still a student and i don't have all the knowledge regarding these kind of subjects so i cant answer all the questions or reply to all of your statements and i will do my best. Thank you for replying and reading and i hope you find what you are looking for.

      J MAC quran.com/71/15-16
      check out sahih international translation and also [10:5]. Just to make this clear, the quran is not a book of science its a book of signs, that is why these signs can be both scientific and historical to prove that god exists because no man can come up with even something similar to quran and quran is not outdated, that is why you see many modern Muslim people live by it everyday. I cannot deny that you are a professional astrophysicist but you clearly don't speak Arabic that well nor you know the study of quran that well also, so why do you jump into conclusion and judge the quran? Finally, if you and others think Islam is against science then you are wrong. Look back at the history, great doctors ,mathematicians and physicists came under the name of Islam. and once again thank you for reading

    What happens out there is scarier than we can possibly imagine, the fact that we know very little makes me even more scared, the BIG questions will always remain unanswered: How BIG is the cosmos and WHERE is the comos and has it got finite boundaries? It has to be somewhere! Why does anything exist, why isnt there nothing, but even then isnt nothing something?

    Although I know all sorts of methods have been applied to this data in order to make it into a sound, it still doesn't change the message: Somewhere out there, there's a ball made out of some of the most dense material humankind can imagine. It spins with unbelievable speed and sends out rays like a lighthouse or some sort of beacon. Somewhere out there is some object, not able to be grasped by our stupid, limited minds. I am silent, listening in awe, to the rays emitted by this incredible thing

    I do have to agree with the fact that Sound does not travel through space, being a vacuum as all, but Pulsars do produce extremely powerful radio waves in a dynametric fashion from the electromagnetic field produced as it spins, think about it like this. Take a DC Motor Fan while it's spinning and hold it near a battery powered Handheld radio, You will hear something that is quite similar to what you heard here. Try it.

      What you're doing there is an example of a form of confirmation bias. When you go looking for any evidence for something you think to be true, you will inevitably find it in abundance, regardless of what you believe is in any sense true or not. In this case, you have a verse from the Quran, you find something that loosely fits that description (out of millions of possible interpretations) and say that they're somehow connected. If the Quran would have said "in the sky are stars that spin around their axes multiple times a second", then you'd have a winner, as that is a clear and unambiguous claim. Instead what you have is something vague about the night sky, stars and knocking, which could mean anything and everything. I could show you a picture of a person with a star piercing knocking on a door in the night and that would fit the description as well. What makes your interpretation more valid than mine? Nothing.
      Don't fall into the trap of searching for meaning for vague references, unsurprisingly finding some form of it and then claiming that it somehow validates your preconceived notions. It's a well-studied form of irrational thinking and you'll end up fooling yourself. The meaning you choose to give the text is something that originates from you, not the text.
