I knew a bit about neutron stars, but I certainly didn't expect such weird light-bending effects, especially to its sky and its surface! It's amazing that you can see the entire surface front-to-back.
Another fun fact: the various layers of matter within a neutron star arrange themselves into shapes similar to various pasta noodles, from gnocchi to spaghetti to lasagna, which is why it's also called "Nuclear Pasta". It hasn't been observed directly aside from theoretical math formulas, but if it does indeed exist, nuclear pasta would be the strongest material in the universe.

I had NO IDEA that neutron stars had a solid surface!! 😮
I thought they were plasma like other stars!!
Neutron stars are a bunch of freaks. With their dense iron surfaces and superfluids.

Neutron stars have more similarities to planets than to stars. They have an atmosphere, a solid crust, a mantle, and possibly a core. Only they are, much much, MUCH, more massive amd hot

0:25 phew, I was worried for a minute

Typically, most of an atom's volume is empty space; in a Neutron Star, the intense gravity has crushed all the particles down to where there's no space in between. That's why a teaspoon of matter would weigh as much as a mountain, because if you crushed a mountain down to the point that all the particles were touching, it'd be a teaspoon.
Or so we are led to believe by modern science. I'm certain one day the story will change.

"...a solid surface."
Such an Attenborough moment, I love it.
The light distortion around the neutron star makes perfect sense to me now that I see it, but I never once thought about that.
Neutron stars, especially pulsars, are my favorite subject in astronomy. You should of added about how fast these suckers are spinning! (unless you're planing a pulsar one for that)
You did great capturing this one, gave me anxiety the closer we got

While standing on the neutron star, light coming from distant stars near the horizon should be red shifted. Light coming from above should be blue shifted.

2:49 I would rather live on a neutron star than rather live as a depressed person on earth
You would just be a depressed person on a neutron star. At least on earth you can craft meaning out of life. Get some sun, regulate your sleep, quit drinking/drugs, get some exercise, eat better, find something (or many things) to do that you love. Life will come together
Reject the untruths your mind has become familiar with. The comfort and familiarity. You actually know the truth. How much is the rotational speed?
@@botandrew1 depends on the type. Normal ones can take a few seconds to a few minutes. Magnetars, which are much bigger and much denser, can take hours. Pulsars, the fastest moving celestial bodies in the universe, can take milliseconds, which is insanely fast for something that size.
