I grew up listening to my parents listen to Simon & Garfunkel and then in my twenties rediscovered it again and also discovered Art Garfunkels solo works. When I was married me and my wife took my parents to the Albert Hall to see Garfunkel for n concert and he brought his wife and young son James onto the stage. Some years later we all went to Hyde Park to see Simon and Garfunkel perform their Old Friends show. I’ve been a child, a teenager, a married man and a father listening to this man’s incredible voice, and my own parents were young when they listened to his music. So many decades. God bless Art Garfunkel and his family. Life is a strange and sometimes beautiful trip.
When I was in school, we had a band of two. I was Garfunkel and my friend was Simon, and we sang all of the Simon and Garfunkel songs. All the lyrics are embedded in my mind forever. Thank you Simon and Garfunkel. There has never before or after been music like yours. Lots of love. 🌸🌸
Art Garfunkel was a large contributing factor to what made the duo of Simon & Garfunkel so great. I also loved his solo album 'Angel Clare' and I always felt he deserved more appreciation than he usually got, both as a musician and as a fine human being. He was the perfect complementary counterbalance to Paul Simon, both musically and in terms of personality. This sweet and poignant letter reaffirms all of that in my estimation. All the best to you, Art - and many thanks for five decades of lovely musical inspiration.
Yes, I do agree. And I also thank you for the five decades, Artie. My 70th birthday is 25th of September. I have great memories of their singing from all decades. I watch something Art and Simon on you tube everyday. Love the Central Park Concert. My seven year old great grandson's desk is right beside mine and now and then I hear him softly singing along. Love and Peace
wow, you will have to excuse me for being of a younger generation. I never saw this til now and I could spend years around this guy just listening to him and giving me his knowledge of this world and life experiences but most of all, that joys and world of singing, I mean this guy could teach a baby how to sing, just a beautiful being he is
Such a lovely poetic letter to his younger self. I grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel's music and still have their albums. They are legends. I never tire of listening to them. The Sound Of Silence and Bridge Over Troubled Waters are so hauntingly beautiful. Garfunkel's beautiful angelic voice singing Bridge Over Troubled Waters is mesmerizing. No one else could have sang it so beautifully. I loved watching his casualness of putting his hands in his pockets when he sang and out would come that beautiful voice. Those are two of my all time favorite songs. I miss Simon and Garfunkel as a duo. Their voices harmonized so perfectly together. This video brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Art Garfunkel. You are a treasure.
Thank You Art. Your voice I love. I remember trying to sing like you to a LP and a 8 track. Your words and voice live on in my own children now and forever.
And so he sings in a lower key. It still brings joy. And, that's what it is all about. That's even if the only audience is yourself. Like the line in the Harry Chapin song, "He didn't know how well he sang. It just made him whole." Thanks for the memories art.
I wish I could meet Mr. Garfunkel. I haven't met many who can see and process the world the way he does. Thank you for bringing your music to our ears.
He was a handsome one, as a youngster. He's done a great job of keeping his kids out of prying media eyes, because I've never seen any of them anywhere. And I live in NYC and get around to different media events.
Jonathan Gomez And he's one of the rare ones who still sings everything in the original key! Plus, Ringo too! So basically it comes down to having to have been a Beatle.
My mum told me she met Art and Paul with her girlfriends or friend in the 60's on a walking holiday staying in hostels in the North of England along the way hiking and said Paul was lovely and really shy...and Art and her shared a kiss and he gave her a piggy back Iol.. I said its funny cause you and Art both have red curly hair think he fancied my mum a little bit, she was a good catholic girl at the time! But they all had a good laugh. Sadly my mum passed away in 2011 but I always remember that story she told me and Bridge over troubled water was played at my uncles funeral and my mum was right they both seem to be good down to earth people!!
+oomoonbeam Wow bless her heart. sorry for your loss. she must have had the best time though!! that's sounds like a dream.. I would do almost anything to have a memory like that. but sadly nothing can turn back time
This video is so wonderful. Art Garfunkel seems like such a good person. He certainly has had one of the most recognizable and beautiful voices in the music industry. The downfall of his voice is like watching an old friend die and I almost did with the last part of this video. Touching.
I can't imagine what it's like to lose your original singing voice like Artie did, I've lost my voice for a few weeks at a time and each time I feel like dying. But to be able to persevere like he has is something to admire.
He could tell himself to forgive Paul for recording a solo record as a teenager. It wasn't just Art's incredible voice that made the duo stars and wealthy. It was the songs PAUL wrote. Not to mention that Paul couldn't be expected to spend his life writing only songs Art would want to record. He needed to grow as a songwriter and he made great music. Art could sing songs people besides Paul wrote and did.
He's still got that beautiful poetry... I was raised on Simon and Garfunkel's music, and to this day I still love listening to them. One thing I never noticed though was that Garfunkel is left handed, as is Simon. Although he can't go to the same level as he was before he lost his singing voice, he never lost the power inside him. Their songs have kept me going for so many years. And to Simon and Garfunkel, I owe a lot.
My wife and I went to see Art Garfunkel in person at the New Brunswick State Theater (NJ) last night. Was worth every minute of it. It was also an enlightening experience for Art to share his poems while singing both new & old songs. The show only had a professional acoustic guitarist and Art's voice - boy, did he show he could hold his own! Even though he does not play any musical instruments, his voice (impressively recovered after 3 years of hiatus) still carries the enchantment it did over 50 years ago. Thank you, Art Garfunkel, for sharing your heart, soul and wisdom as a lasting legacy to the rest of us! God bless you.
If you haven't watched and listened to Art's note to his younger self, you are missing out. He said when you age you get out of the way of yourself. I just had my 70th birthday on September 25 and a bulb went off over my head when he said that you get out of your own way. I know I lived thru some great decades and I am not going to be an idiot and say, "but I wouldn't go back to that age". They are fucking lying or was fugly and couldn't make friends. I would go before the wheels on the bus stopped turning round and round. But you do release your ass cheeks a little when you know you had your fun and you can't go back......I do wish I had been wilder, tried everything, and made love more. Peace and Happiness
This voice is....time immortal!. It's like falling into water and being lifted and swayed by high and low waves only to (when you get to the end of the song) drown peacfully. NO sir....for the fans and those who love you, your voice will never fade, never be gone...locked in time immotal.
Mary M. Revis Love this comment. So many people who love & admire this man. I hope he reads some of the praise & adoration from people of all ages. We will love you forever. 💕💕
He said that he doesn't know how he lost his voice. Cigarettes. Does it every time. Cheryl Cole, same problem, record label threatened to boot her if she didn't quit. I don't think she has.
I stumbled across this interview....listened to this gentleman's voice. Nothing is coincidental in my beliefs....our "names" are chosen across the Heavens..."Art" is given to the world to create and heal... the natural tones of your voice calls out to all of us.....the sparkle of "God"...in all the ways the stars show us....shine on my friend...keep to your love and styles...thanks for the beauty you portray in music...... I thank You...once more across the seas...:)
I cried all through this piece....damn Sir....you stored emotions I thought I could keep in check. I lied to myself didn't I? God bless you!!! Your voice still soars and reigns supreme to me and those who adore your music and artistry.
His voice, his words, his music, have left memories and feelings indelibly etched in my soul. Thank you Mr. Garfunkle:) A voice may die, but a memory lives forever.
Art, your contribution is 'Joy & Happiness Worldwide' So many peoples lives have been enriched with your calling to sing. I thank you from my heart. Your songs & lyrics fill my heart with joy. For that I Am eternally grateful & I thank you. XXX
WoW !!I'm actually here right now in the middle of the desert in Saudi Arabia. As I watch this beautiful inspirational video of my long time favorite Mr. Art G...Tears fell from my eyes simple because hes my idol.I really miss him so much...During my early days in the Philippines I and my friends usually goes to a videoke bars just to sing Mr.Art G. and Paul S. songs .Drink til the wee hours it's so enjoying. Thanks for thier wonderful songs. They maybe old now thats for sure. But their songs never will.I love you Art and Paul...
I am convinced Art Garfunkel stole his voice from an Angel. Its beauty has brought me great joy and minutes later deep sadness. All the emotions including envy. Thank you, Art.
This is one of the greatest person on the planet!! When I here a song singing by Art I really don't know what happens to me , his voice is making me in an state of .... I can not explain this feeling..., but its feels good !!!
Art and Paul will forever be my favorite singers. I memorized so many of their songs, because I could not quit listening to them. Then I saw them in Atlanta together right after their concert in Central Park years ago. Over 50,000 people at Grant Field downtown Atlanta, and you could have heard a pin drop before Art started singing, 'Bridge over Trouble Water'. It was a magical night...haha I still have my concert shirt that says, 'Still crazy after all these Years!!'.
What can one say about Art Garfunkel's music ? Beautiful, reflective, romantic, speaking from places in the heart that many of us can only feel, but not put into words. I'm 59 years old, and have enjoyed music, from the time I was a little boy, and still to this day. My taste is eclectic, having grown up with parents that enjoyed the rat pack, and Vicky Carr, and so on. I also had older and younger siblings, so we listened to 60's, through 70's and 80's and 90's music ranging all over the place, really. When I look back though, and remember music that had the most impact on me. Music that when I hear it today... still draws my youthful feelings out, it's the music of Simon and Garfunkel. Art's ability to write and sing music, that touches, in a way that's so poignant, and beautiful........... brings out the romantic, and the poet, in all of us, that we didn't know we had. I've tried to imagine how music, had Garfunkel, "never been ", would be different, because of his influence. Simon and Garfunkel have touched a whole world.
Hats off to the voice of my inner self in the 60s, the echo of voices I should've listened to in the 70s and now full circle, to have grown with you and the music you created. A new register? New music that will enthrall a new generation. Thank you for the years of listening to your tunes and here's to as far as this road will go.
I saw Art in a small theatre in Bristol. He was recovering from his voice loss but still sang beautifully. Amazingly, he said that he had walked across Europe from west to East, doing a section each year. That in its self is an admirable achievement.
The emotion in your voice goes through me, leaving me washed and cleaned of negativity. A truly spiritual journey. You are God's gift to the world. Thank you.
Art is a gifted poet. I recommend his poetry collections to anyone that enjoys his unique way with words. They’re full of interesting notions and witty whims.
Thanks Art for the small insight into your life and all the years you shared your musical gift. Your songs are a trip down memory lane every time I listen to your songs.
we all have a short time on this earth, each and every one of us adds to that experience of life…you gave so many so much pleasure in your music..job done, the hat can be replaced
"You will never, ever find the right hat." That is, effectively, no consolation, but the truth of it is a sort of a consolation. What wonderful insight.
I totally enjoyed watching this...as I too grow older... I grew up in a awesome amount of decadeds the 60's the 70's and continue on,,,, like so many artists that were a little older then me and maybe a little younger then me... We all move forward... yes the vocals of artists that we loved as youth because of time.. they cannot sing like thier prime... the actors we loved in what maybe was the pinacle of their being on top of their game... I still love it all.. and I am totally able to cut them the slack.... My very low level of talent is maybe looking through a camera lens,,, and seeing the simple,, that makes me smile,,, and maybe a few others too... The egos of artists... I dont care... for that moment in time they brought a smile to my face even decades later it is still there.
I so love your music. I lost my favorite brother and best friend in November and he loved your music too so listening to your music brings me joy that in turn, brings me closer to my brother. Thank you for all the joy you have brought us my Darling.
Honestly since a boy I have followed you and your music. You are one of the people I wish I could meet in life if I could. Thank you for your life contribution
That was beautiful My voice changed due to a cervical neck fusion. I was hit by a drunk driver. It's like being a completely different person. I feel for you Mr. Garfunkel
I started crying at 0.30 when For Emily, whenever I may find her came out and continued till the end of the video. The part about marriage and his son really moved me. Such beautiful words from a wise and wonderful man! Thank you Artie
Dear Art, In regard to waht you said at the end, at 4:03 ... You don't need the right hat. You don't need a hat at all! You are Art. Sincerely kind and moving.
"What do I know that you may value? It's what *you* know that *I* have forgotten."
That hit me a little hard ;n;
Yes.
Jiggy Wiggy ASMR
Exactly... as soon as he spoke those words I felt it immediately.
"I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now."

Absolutely... just got chills reading ur ppst.

One beautiful human being .
One of my musical heroes. A poet with a voice of an angel.
Absolutely

His son sings beautifully too.

No matter what,Art..you will forever be a inspiration for generations to come..
That was so lovely! He is so vital to the sound of Simon & Garfunkel and is totally underrated for his contributions to the 60s culture

Thank you for this. I'm 70, and your music helped me get through some tough times and boosted the satisfaction of all times.

Thank you Art. I grew old too. Just have to learn how to do it right. You are a class act. God bless.
Legend. Plus, the level of self awareness... respect.
Love S&G ...I could listen to Art for hrs! WISH THIS WAS LONGER :(
I wish I could meet Mr. Garfunkel. I haven't met many who can see and process the world the way he does. Thank you for bringing your music to our ears.
Very brave to give such a personal speech, I would argue Arthur had the most rich voice on the planet
He was a handsome one, as a youngster. He's done a great job of keeping his kids out of prying media eyes, because I've never seen any of them anywhere. And I live in NYC and get around to different media events.
Nothing lasts forever Art. You done good.
BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS!
*you've* done good
Grammar Nazi Andre Wright
"You done good" is a colloquialism I used on purpose. Look the word up if needed.
Some of us already knew that, frere. To bad some people aren't as smart as they think they are. ; )
His legacy maybe? like energy
when he was like, I lost my singing voice three years ago my heart sank lol I felt like I got news that someone died
😁
I love this man. I love him.
Same here! :)
TheLiquefied I do ,too.. He sings like an angel.
i love him more ❤❤❤❤❤❤
( i would die for him)
You win Owen Shelley.. I wouldn't die for him, I don't think...or, maybe I would..
+Owen Shelley idolatry.
Grew up on his music . . . Growing older with his music. He’s a class act. ♥️
Same here..🌹
How many 70 year old men still sing like that, even in a "lower key?"
Scott Reed Paul McCartney. At 73 his voice has rarely changed.
Jonathan Gomez Right????
Jonathan Gomez And he's one of the rare ones who still sings everything in the original key! Plus, Ringo too! So basically it comes down to having to have been a Beatle.
Deanna Bayless im not sure if paul smoked like art did tho, the smoking has a huge effect
Scott Reed
With him on the hat !
I love you much, Arthur Garfunkle, you are divine🤍🕊️😇🧖♀️🤣🙏🏻✨🌀🌟💙 Thank you for so much beauty
My mum told me she met Art and Paul with her girlfriends or friend in the 60's on a walking holiday staying in hostels in the North of England along the way hiking and said Paul was lovely and really shy...and Art and her shared a kiss and he gave her a piggy back Iol.. This video is so wonderful. Art Garfunkel seems like such a good person. He certainly has had one of the most recognizable and beautiful voices in the music industry. The downfall of his voice is like watching an old friend die and I almost did with the last part of this video. Touching.
I read earlier today that he walked clear across the U.S., Japan, and Europe.
I can't imagine what it's like to lose your original singing voice like Artie did, I've lost my voice for a few weeks at a time and each time I feel like dying. But to be able to persevere like he has is something to admire.

He seems like such a nice guy :)
he's a much nicer gut that i always took him for

Garfunkel’s was the voice, Simon was the genius. Pure genius
This letter is more beautiful than a music. Powerful. I felt moved by this poem or letter!!!!!
Garfunkel could harmonize with a blender.
Yes
+Charles Barbola this is very true
If the voices of angels in heaven don't sound like Art Garfunkel, I'm going to be disappointed.
I believe they'd sound better lol
So can I
This gave me goosebumps and tears.
Thanx Art.
Thank you art for all the hauntingly beautiful moments I cherish them all through the decades of my life.
At the end I just started to cry guys sorry...such a great voice...
I cried all through this piece....damn Sir....you stored emotions I thought I could keep in check. I lied to myself didn't I? God bless you!!! Your voice still soars and reigns supreme to me and those who adore your music and artistry.
Need to get to know yourself first
This is what growing old gracefully looks like folks. You could see in the twinkle in his eyes that he would be such a fun guy to be around.
His voice, his words, his music, have left memories and feelings indelibly etched in my soul. Thank you Mr. Garfunkle:) A voice may die, but a memory lives forever.

It was a magical night...haha I still have my concert shirt that says, 'Still crazy after all these Years!!'.
you bring tears of joy from me .thanks art

That last line is true in more ways than one.
Thanks Art for your shared insight to life. I have so enjoyed your music over the years. My children who are musicians, love you too! God bless!

Such a beautiful letter. I grew up listening to their songs because of my mother. I’m proud and glad that I was fortunate enough to know their music.
Art's letter and his heartfelt delivery of it touches me deeply. So much more to say about that; maybe I will write a letter too.
I grew up listening to them, what a legend
🥰 Im so grateful for a world with Art Garfunkel’s beautiful voice and soul in it.
I love you Art Garfunkel.
Lost his tenor octave.
But still sings well in one octave lower.......!
God bless him he is a great philosopher.........!!
My most favorite and beloved singer... mr art garfunkel... i love you, sir!
We have the same birthday, ten years apart. I also lost my voice, but it was my fault. Thank you so much for your talent & integrity.
we all have a short time on this earth, each and every one of us adds to that experience of life…you gave so many so much pleasure in your music..job done, the hat can be replaced
Hi Art !!! your songs never died .. all your songs, Its still lived always in my minds
miss you and friend very much !!!
Thats pretty amazing Art..Well done.
"You will never find the right, hat" .you lose your voice, never,.. your sense of humour. Nicely done, Garfunky!
His voice can sooth & tame the savage beast.
Thank u Art for many years of wonderful music,God Bless.
I've watched the concert in Central Park many many times. Sounds awesome with the my new Bose headphones.
Green w/envy Dave......Peace
Nice Bose plug. I'm sold ;)
Garfunkel
Their music will last forever unlike a lot of the nowadays "music"
Thank you for lifting us all to a better place, Art.
I started crying at 0.30 when For Emily, whenever I may find her came out and continued till the end of the video. The part about marriage and his son really moved me. Such beautiful words from a wise and wonderful man! Thank you Artie
Dear Art,
In regard to waht you said at the end, at 4:03 ...
You don't need the right hat. You don't need a hat at all! You are Art. Sincerely kind and moving.
