there is wisdom in that, in knowing when it's over, and not trying to force a different ending. Sad, but less final. I think Paul wanted to grow musically in a much wider direction, and Art wanted go another way. Paul is still inventing himself, the way Dylan does, and Paul McCartney. They survive because they have the courage to make mistakes and get beyond them. And the music they made still resonates.
Turns out that neither Paul McCartney nor Paul Simon could artistically match their output with their partners. Both Paul's were popular but both took a step down musically when they went solo.
Something about the ‘harmonies’ of two people singing together, who are such opposites. Similar to the Evenly Brothers, their early inspiration. Whatever the differences, somehow musically it works as a perfect whole.
I am 25 and I feel so lucky now that I got to see them in concert together during their 2003 reunion tour. I was 16 at the time and it was my first real concert.
I saw Bob Dylan and Paul Simon at the Hollywood Bowl in 1999. Perfect June night. 6th row seats with Val Kilmer and his girlfriend a couple seats down from us, Jack Nicholson just behind us with his head thrown back the entire time with that inimitable grin. Simon played first. Dylan played next. And then they played together. Magical. Seems like another lifetime ago.
I'm 80 remember it all. So thankful I am an American. So sorrowful what America has begun. We need to make sure that the young, today's young, can have a magical experience, that I HAD. Toby Keith so dead at a young age; our young are dying, struggling. So sorrowful to watch.
I had a lift-back Corolla and homemade speakers way back when. It was a warm sunset in fall, drove to the end of this beautiful old rural road growing over with calf high grass, popped the back, put on "Bookends"... The love of my life was with me, I wanted to surprise her, we didnt as much "waltz" open armed to this song as much as I just pulled her into a hug and swayed until it ended. I miss what we could have been Yvonne. For two minutes of my life I was the happiest man alive, in the right spot, right time, with the right woman... Sharing exactly the best thing ever. @@TheWillog Huh? What does this have to do with the original comment? Silly racist. It's a fact that many Jewish people in the entertainment industry change their names to more "anglo" sounding ones. Black people changing their names wouldn't do much anyway (unless you're a biracial person that can pass for white) because they still look black. Some Jewish people who look a certain way can get away with no one knowing they're Jewish which is why some change their last name.
As much as I loved S & G, Paul made better records on his own which got better and better and became world music - better than anyone else except Dylan & The Beatles - I love Paul Simon's music
Paul Simon’s music is boring & mediocre without Artie’s voice. Just think of Artie’s delivery of Bridge Over Troubled Water, April Come She Will, his lead vocals on American Tune & Scarborough Fair. He was always the dominant voice that the audience loved. Paul couldn’t tolerate that & that’s what drove them apart.
@@katharina8101 Hey Kitty Cat, maybe you should do a little more research- Artie had plenty of hits after he split with Paul and is loved by millions of fans. Also, Artie is listed in Rolling Stone as one of “The Best Singers Ever in the World “ - I didn’’t see Paul Simon’s name on that list. A song is just words on paper without a great singer to bring them to life.
@@katharina8101 At least he made the list. I think you just like to argue. You are free to love any artist you choose & I will do the same. End of conversation.
@@Simpleot2hk I think of songwriters like I think of movie directors. When we watch a movie are we thinking about the director or the famous actor ? Paul wrote the songs but the listener isn’t thinking about who wrote the song - they are listening to the famous SINGER who delivers the beautiful sound to our ears. Does anyone think about Paul Anka when Frank Sinatra sings My Way - I doubt it. Many great singers don’t write their own songs but have wowed us with their vocals & style (Frankie Valli, Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, etc.). The list goes on & on - songwriters are nothing without a great singer to deliver the words with beauty & feelings that give us goosebumps. Paul was so fortunate to have a great talent like Art Garfunkel to deliver his words on a piece of paper & bring them to the top of the charts. A voice like no other. ❤️❤️❤️
BOTW..was obvious;y MEANT for "artie" as SIMON himself SAYS here..... such an EXQUISITE song... so beautifully sung by SUCH a consummate singer....DEE licious.....
Turned out to be the WRONG choice. With that guitar he coughed up One Trick Pony and CapeMan and You're the One and Surprise. Garfunkel wouldn't have let him put out that garbage. Simon was hit or miss as a solo artist. Take away the S and G years and his legacy is seriously in doubt.
Simon and Garfunkel are like the colors blue and gold. Which is the better color? That's a silly question. Put blue and gold together and they greatly enhance each other. Paul was a great writer but his solo albums were hit and miss. Yes, he wrote Graceland (leaning HEAVILY on the music of the South African musicians!) But he also wrote One Trick Pony and CapeMan, two truly awful albums. Artie had the epic Angel Clare, then some good but not great albums, although I really enjoyed Scissors Cut and Everything Waits to be Noticed. But The Simon and Garfunkel years were the best. I admire both immensely and anyone who says one is more gifted than the other is being juvenile.
I agree that normally that would be a crappy thing to say, but if you ask anyone whose voice they remember, Simon's or Garfunkel's, 99.9999% of them will say Garfunkel. So, yes, he was more popular in a musical sense, but he admits that he wouldn't have had the popularity without simon's motivation and drive.
And Paul said he didn't think he'd have had the courage to go it alone because he was too shy. Art's confidence and popularity with the girls gave him the idea of them performing together. Art even said they took something from the other that made them sound good together.
He has vocal paresis for the past 3 years and it was supposed to heal but his voice is still weak. He has tried to sing again in public but had to cancel a fall tour.
@@safkaesque yeah. You missed the fact that the person you thought was Paul was actually his brother Eddie. He was in the interview too. He and Paul look and sound exactly alike so the confusion is understandable.
@@debrakish9659 gosh i didn’t know Paul have a brother just spitting image of him are they twin? it’s cool. Is Eddie older than Pau? God bless everyone.
@@litaanderson1589 Eddie is younger. I can tell that's not Paul because Eddie is much more smiley and sweet because he's not famous and nowhere as wealthy, I'm sure. Paul is the rich longtime celeb, and he doesn't need to bow down to anyone, so he's not expressive and seems very confident.
@@TheWillog because there is no thrill in waiting for their record to be released to purchase it and, because it is the only record you have, you play it repeatedly.
Both guys are great. I wonder why the producers of this video have used images from a Beatles concert (the girls screaming at 8:42 are from the first Beatles concert in the US, at the Washington Coliseum).
9Pual was fustrated that why he should share his success with Art.why Art got apploaded for the songs he has written.why should he depend on Art.if he could be a solo singer and song writer by himself.I love the both. But the problem came from Paul 's ego.
yy w. Absolutely!! Paul couldn’t accept that Artie sang better, had a better stage appearance & got the standing ovations. The audience loved him & Paul was jealous. He should have kissed Art’s feet for bringing the songs to their level of popularity. Paul could never have done that on his own.
@@normaverleni7217 I only 'know' what I read. But I saw somewhere that Garfunkel was jealous of Simon's talent as a writer, And Simon was jealous of Garfunkel's sex appeal. Everyone wants what they're not.
Kerri Wilson That’s so true Kerri. The fans loved Art’s exceptional voice & his stage appearance. I never thought Paul’s voice was anything special & he was envious of Art’s good looks. I agree that he was a great song writer but Artie made them successful - the fans love him.
Nah, you could see in this video at 11:35 how they were just tired of each other. They both wanted to decide how the song should be performed and they both wanted to be the center of attention and they'd known each other so long that they had no tolerance left for each other's disagreements. It looks to me like nobody's fault - they just couldn't work together any more.
Paul was easy to miss when they were both performing. That must be why he became such an amazing songwriter. He said everything was because he's short. People thought Art wrote the songs, so Paul couldn't easily get credit for his genius. Now they're both old, so I'm sure they're more balanced now. People have different tastes, though. I never though Art was all that hot, even back in the 60s. Sometimes the camera panned to good angles of him, and he looked pretty and angelic, but not overall. They both looked amazing in their 15-16 year old promo pics when they were Tom & Jerry, though, like teen heartthrobs. It looks like Simon got a faceful of plastic surgery, veneers, and what looks like a hair transplant in the late 70s to early 80s, so he looked good at that time.
I remember when I was about 13 (it must've been 1974) I got BRIDGE OVER TROUBLE WATER for Christmas and I was so embarrassed. I was listening to rock by then (everyone was) and I asked my mom, how come this album? And she said, "I asked the salesman in the record section of Sears what all the kids were listening to." *face palm* I still listened to it but it didn't mean nearly what it means to me now. (Hope that guy choked on his commission lol)
It sounds like Paul was jealous of his friend Artie singing bridge over trouble water so well at the time, what a voice, glad they are friends again because life is too short, they look like two wounderful jewish boys, they belong togerther God bless them love them both
Have they become friends again? Good to hear, artie really dug into him this last time. Last i heard they both were on bad terms with eachother. But simon did say around 2003 i think, that they will always get into arguments and get on bad terms but will always be friends.
Actually, Art wanted to do movies 6 months out of the year while Paul Simon wrote the hits, and then Art would come back and sing for 6 months - then leave again. Paul Simon was doing all of the HEAVY work. The BOTW song did not break them up...
This clip was from a very long time ago. A more current clip has Paul saying they haven't spoken to each other in years and that he'll never work with him again. As far as I've read or heard, they are still not on speaking terms.
@@rockallstarscollaborationp3136 They still have not made up. Art said some things in an interview that supposedly really hurt Paul's feelings. That was in 2015
I really hope both Paul and art shake hands and make up - by a other video arty was still sour and I assume ditto from Paul .? But by this video both have grudgly" admitted they wouldn't have be where they were and are without each other I think either one should get together and chat not as singer/song writers or who was right or wrong. But as maybe talk about being grandparents what are they are doing now .and remain
He's saying "Arthur, Arthur" because he was referring to the standing ovations Art always received after singing Bridge Over Troubled Water. I think Paul was revealing that he felt jealous of Art in these instances without actually admitting it.
Dear God, he and his Dad are absolute TWINS..., even their voices.... AMAZING....!! This was a great video - THANK YOU...! I so miss those days (except the goofy looking dancers in the backgrounds of these old B&W videos - could have done without them, even back then)...
The Paul Simon lookalike is his brother, Eddie, not his dad. Eddie and Paul played together on stage at least once - Art was there too and he stepped aside while Paul and Eddie played the guitar piece called Anji together. It's on TH-cam somewhere still I'd imagine, I've seen it a few times (some years ago now).
Phil O Brien Fair enough..., yeah, I think his Dad's name was Louis..., I've been out of touch with music for some time.... I actually found that clip you are speaking off..., I didn't know his brother was such a proficient guitar player (I think he taught guitar and taught Paul how to play...?)
Their dad is shown in the interview, a black and white image on stage - he was a well known musician too...at least in the locality. Paul might have been there too - can't remember even though I only watched it twenty minutes ago! I read in the recent Paul Simon biography that Eddie is a music teacher - he's younger than Paul but apparently got into guitar far more naturally than Paul so there's a good chance he did indeed teach his older brother how to play! Interesting link here: www.allmusic.com/artist/eddie-simon-mn0001422049 I was thinking as well while I had nothing better to think of - Art Garfunkel is doing shows regularly again now (I've seen him once since he lost and regained his voice, at Vicar Street in Dublin) with Tab Laven on guitar. If Art had hired Eddie to play at the concerts they could have called themselves Simon and Garfunkel again! I mean, who's to know it wasn't the original Simon!
Paul was being very honest here - I sat first row center for two Simon and Garfunkel concerts in October 1993 - and Paul would leave the stage when Artie sang BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER - at the songs end there was thunderous applause - and as Paul walked from the shadows back onto the stage i could see he was not happy - he was jealous of the response Artie was receiving - years later I saw them again but this time Artie would sing a section by himself and Paul would sing a section by himself and actually i really loved it because Paul added some soulful twists to his singing that worked incredibly well.

Turns out that neither Paul McCartney nor Paul Simon could artistically match their output with their partners. Both Paul's were popular but both took a step down musically when they went solo.
Wow, Paul Simon drives his own car during an interview. cool!
Friends again before one or the other dies
It's from a documentary about Paul Simon from the early 90s called "Born At The Right Time".
Hermosa voces, hermosa música y qué guapo era Garfunkel.
I would have been too shy to do it without Artie!!!!!!
Iconic duo. I love their music.
Ahhhh.... Love It!!!! One Perfect Person!! Perfectly said!:)) Garfunkel.
Great interview.
Something about the ‘harmonies’ of two people singing together, who are such opposites. Similar to the Evenly Brothers, their early inspiration. Whatever the differences, somehow musically it works as a perfect whole.
Simon and Garfunkel are a group that when I hear their songs I start singing along. Like in this video.
I am 25 and I feel so lucky now that I got to see them in concert together during their 2003 reunion tour. I was 16 at the time and it was my first real concert.
Very lucky, and great choice for your first concert :)
Magical. Seems like another lifetime ago.
the ending of this is gold.
I'm 80 remember it all. So thankful I am an American. So sorrowful what America has begun. We need to make sure that the young, today's young, can have a magical experience, that I HAD. Toby Keith so dead at a young age; our young are dying, struggling. So sorrowful to watch.
Wonderful music!
Nothing else mattered and I wish time could have stopped. I hope you are blessed, wherever you are now.
You painted this little snippet gorgeously.
It sounds like she was your "Emily", wherever you may find her.

12:46 They look so cute
I always liked that they kept their Jewish names. Too many Jewish artists/actors change their name. If you're good, you're good.
What about all the African American artist who use other names preforming crazy 😝
@@Keezie27 it's about entertainers changing their name ,
I'm not sure if many people immediately recognize Garfunkel as a Jewish name. It's not as overly Jewish as Goldblum.
They made such good music together.....They deserve the credits of the new generations too.....
I have never seen Garfunkle play a guitar.
@@normaverleni7217 😮💨😮💨😮💨
It always saddened me that Simon and Garfunkel was so much more than Simon or Garfunkel and neither of them could accept that.
If paul didnt want art to be successful then he shouldnt have written for him, simples!!!!
Wow Paul's brother looks like him!
BOTW..was obvious;y MEANT for "artie" as SIMON himself SAYS here.....
such an EXQUISITE song...
so beautifully sung by SUCH a consummate singer....DEE licious.....
thanks for this - really enjoyed it.
wow, art is still one hot man
Well if we ever lose paul at least we've got a spare
12:09 -- "You're going to have to pick, sooner or later. Is it me or the guitar?"
I think he chose the guitar.
Good choice
I wanted to hear more!
That’s very true! But I think they both have very recognizable and unique voices.
And Paul said he didn't think he'd have had the courage to go it alone because he was too shy. Art's confidence and popularity with the girls gave him the idea of them performing together. Art even said they took something from the other that made them sound good together.
I would just feel privileged to see these two live.... Damn my young age of 24
wow... Art's spoken voice is SO different from when he sings... seems like he was a deep baritone
Yes and I'm surprised at how sexy a speaking voice Art has/had.
It took me 4 minutes (despite the onscreen titles explicitly stating so) to realize that Paul and Eddie Simon are two different people.
SAME, I bought it up to the point of him talking about Paul in third person.
I didn't even know he had a brother although I love S&G music 👀
He has vocal paresis for the past 3 years and it was supposed to
heal but his voice is still weak. He has tried to sing again in public
but had to cancel a fall tour.
He is touring again now (dates have been postponed due to Covid)
5:47 sounds real cool
Great interview and video Cher. Thank you
I kept wondering “why the heck is Paul referring to himself in the third person??!!”. Lol
yeah i didn’t understand that part is there something i’m missing
OMG SAME HAHA
I think it's the end of "Late in the Evening".
Great. This is part of an documentary we saw ages ago on TV. But we lost the VHS of that great program...
I love Artie and always have. Paul not so much. Artie is a handso 10:52 10:54 handsomest man

Now I play The Boxer, usually on way to work. It gives me the kicks, I don’t know why
hes right, it never comes back, never the same.
@SimonAndGarfunkelF89
That was the first song Ed played, I'm looking for the SECOND song Ed was playing...
But I saw somewhere that Garfunkel was jealous of Simon's talent as a writer,
And Simon was jealous of Garfunkel's sex appeal.
What is this from?
so good
Thank you :)
Why Artie laughed at 2:18? Is there anyone can tell me? thanks.
Because Paul isn't from Macon, Georgia.
BRIDGE IS CLEARLY WHAT BROKE THEM UP. PAUL WAS SMOKIN MAD THAT PEOPLE THOUGHT THIS WAS ARTIES SONG THAT HE HAD WRITTEN AND BECAUSE HE SANG IT ALONE.
Neil Williams I agree! Peace!
The tune Ed is playing at 1:38, it sounds so familiar, does anyone know what it is?
whats the song at 6:27 it sounds great
Wednesday Morning 3AM, this song was on their eponymous first album.
Major Denis Bloodnok thx
“Arthur, Arthur!” or “Author, author!”?
both:))
He's saying "Arthur, Arthur" because he was referring to the standing ovations Art always received after singing Bridge Over Troubled Water. I think Paul was revealing that he felt jealous of Art in these instances without actually admitting it.

SimonAndGarfunkelF89 saves the day! :D
Now for the link for the concert video! :P
Interesting link here: www.allmusic.com/artist/eddie-simon-mn0001422049
I was thinking as well while I had nothing better to think of - Art Garfunkel is doing shows regularly again now (I've seen him once since he lost and regained his voice, at Vicar Street in Dublin) with Tab Laven on guitar. If Art had hired Eddie to play at the concerts they could have called themselves Simon and Garfunkel again! I mean, who's to know it wasn't the original Simon!
Phil O Brien Thanks man - that was a good read...
@@philobrien4129 I saw that clip too but haven't been able to find it again.
Paul Simon eventually resented splitting the profits when he wrote the songs.
Paul got the songwriter royalties by himself but he and Art split the royalties as the singers.
