I'd be a bit peeved spending $80k for a vehicle I couldn't rely on.
For a brand new truck, it is definitely unexuseable. Thanks for sharing, Dustin 👍
All these fancy new electronics are great for tow companies.
Too much technology in new vehicles
I don’t believe I’d buy anything brand new.
I agree. I like less tech for less problems. my Nissan frontier has few frills, less crap to break.
Hence the reason I keep my 2003 2500HD Duramax. 251,000 miles and all I did was fix the injector issues.
Agree they're all junk, same with semis, I just retired after doing 42 years as a otr trucker independent , and all this new semis are the same, just to many technical issues, so ratter then buying another Tractor. I decided to hang it up and retired, because I didn't want to sit in the shops more than being on the road.
Too much electronics in vehicles. Vehicles may have a durability of 25+ years (as in "classic cars"). But the electronics may have a ten year life span. So you junk a good vehicle because electronic parts are not available. Engineers have dumped a curse on American vehicle buyers. Electronics in vehicles are still in the unreliable stage and are extremely expensive to repair.
My 2015 Toyota Camry is 10 years old and absolutely zero electrical problems. Engine and transmission are holding up from years of frequent WOT acceleration events with only the mounts replaced.
I just towed one of these yesterday. It threw a rod. Customer stated it happened while sitting at a red light. Says he was just sitting there idling and suddenly it started making a strange noise. When the light turned green he went to accelerate away from the intersection so he could pull over to the side of the road safely. He says the moment he took his foot off the brake he heard something that sounded like breaking glass, and the engine stopped. When I arrived at the intersection, I found a piece of broken connecting rod on the ground with the Piston pin still attached. I can only assume the Piston was in the oil pan, or what remained of it at least
Holy crap!!!

@@fireflyraven2760 My friend's father has a well-equipped 2004 F150 Lariat with no problems apart from the crappy 2 piece spark plugs. It's a very comfortable truck. Also, 2000s pickup trucks are easier to get in and get out than newer ones. My mom dislikes my dad's 2022 Silverado Custom. Also incandescent tail lights on newer trucks just look plain tacky with tiny reflectors that shorten bulb and cause the metal coating of the plastic reflectors to crack resulting in poor performance and increasing the chance of a rear-end vehicle accident. Instead of putting money in that stupid useless IOT tech, they should've put the money on full LED tail lights as standard and LED headlights with optics that prevent it from blinding other motorists while providing amazing nighttime visibility at the same time and use better manufacturing techniques or processes on the power train, cosmetics, and rust proofing.
@davidperry4013 good for him I have 2014 chwvy silverdo 1500 bought with 118,000 on the odometer been trouble free for the last 12,000 miles it does have a couple issue one being the torque converter is misbehaving so that has to be replaced the other is the wheel bearing and the injectors nothing is going out although these thing have been a bit of a problem it won't be long before I can start pulling this stuff apart but yeah the automakers should invest into things such as that it would make night time driving much better not having the light of Jesus shined into your eyes burning your erretna's out
GM issued a recall on this problem. Just as said in the video, an update issued by GM is causing the computer on the truck to remain on thus creating a constant draw which in turn is killing the battery. Have to take my 23’ Silverado in at some point before I end up like this.
Nice to spend all that money and then have to go spend your valuable time fixing their fcckups.
I learned that lesson with a brand new fix or repair daily I had between 2018 and 2022. They didn't care one bit fixing my car right or wasting my time as long as they could run through their hoops. Then when it came to a loaner vehicle for warranty claims it was tough luck, if you want to rent a car through the agency in cahoots with the stealership they will refund a small portion of that and that is it. Not only do you have to pay your car payment while it is in for repair, you have to pay for a rental.
That over the air update should be only on the new 2024-25 GM Duramax if I’m not mistaken. The 2020-23 didn’t have that capability

And the truck wasn't broke till it had an over the air wave update. You will find out that it is exactly what the driver said it stayed awake after the update and killed the battery overnight. I can tell you that a bi directionally hi and low speed data system that stays awake will draw 500 to 750mh amps which will kill 2 batteries in a matter of hours. That said there's basically nothing wrong with the truck that wasn't self induced by the manufacturer which will turn out to be a glitch in the software update. Although unfortunate for the customer's inconvenience will be rapidly fixed. The driver himself said that he rarely tows a duramax and for good reason they work and produce very well. I have owned 4 of these trucks an 09 LML with 220k miles a 2018 2021 and now a 2024 ZR2 and had no major problems with any of them short of mostly normal maintenance issues. I recently received an email from GM 10/8/60 informing me that I have to return to the deal and preform a reflash update so that they can preform over the air updates to 😅
I have a 2023 2500 HD Duramax. If 15,000 miles transmission had an issue. Took over a month and a half to get parts for it. At 18,7 00 Miles ac compressor went out. It took them a week and a half to fix. At 20,000, miles tailgate open up on me unexpectedly lost a $700 chainsaw because of that. Took The truck back to the shop for the recall on it. Apparently the tailgate will open unexpectedly. So GM sent out a recall for that. Currently at 70,000 miles. Sensor for the air conditioner works sometimes and doesn't so my Air conditioner basically works when it wants to work. I have the LT version. Thank God I bought the extended warranty. After my warranty expires at 100,000, Miles I'm getting rid of this truck. I'm going back to Ford. Thanks a lot Chevrolet for letting me down with these crappy ass vehicles. $72,000 wasted
The only way I will ever take possession of a new GM product is if it's given to me. Until then I'll keep driving my 2002 Chevy Trailblazer with almost 312,000 miles on it & still running fine.
Some Trailblazers/Envoys are over 20 years old and it amazes me how many are still folks daily drivers! Those days of GM excellence are long gone unfortunately
Same here. I have a 2002 silverado 1500HD crew cab. It's pretty bulletproof.

That’s a good point. Never really thought about that on these new aluminum trucks.
I was wondering if you are seeing some tow truck companies now using the webbed type assembly that sets over top of each tire and has a ratchet strap built into the assembly. Where I am in Alberta and have had a couple of older trucks towed in the last few years ( both due to automatic transmission issues and luckily towed from my yard to a shop ) , he pulled out four of these assemblies and put them over the tires and it took him no time to fasten the vehicle down. He said they have been using them for a few years now and make it easier due to not having to find items under the vehicle to hook onto, nor causing damage by the hook ( like a brake line etc ). I thought it was pretty slick, of course with a wreck missing tires etc I am sure it would be going back to using chains to fasten the mess onto the deck.
I’m glad my 2003 F350 doesn’t update at all. Works great everyday with some diesel and a turn of the key.
It’s funny that cars in the past left. The manufacturers fully. Updated and 100% functional, now they push them out make the consumer test it and then they “update” to fix problems they Missed
This is a problem with all modern GM vehicles with over the air updates. When the new Colorado came out it was a huge problem with them.

Also me: Did you ask Bobby he has a Dodge Cummins you know, a Real Truck? 😂

@ericd1632 no. Not the 12 valve
It’s a battery problem or a loss connection. I have a 2019 and I got the OEM batteries replaced 2 times under warranty in 3 years and the 3rd time I got a pair of Optima batteries and haven’t had a problem again. The OEM batteries are junk.
You're going to be sadly disappointed when you have to replace those junk Optimas. Once Johnson Controls bought out Optima years ago, their quality went right down the toilet. Now Johnson Controls battery division doesn't even exist anymore anyhow. They sold out to a different company a few years ago.
Colorado's had the same issue. There are fixes for both trucks currently. They update over the air and end up draining the battery if the update fails. Owners must go to a dealer for the software fix.
Sad that a new truck drains battery like that doing an over the air update. Thanks from NW Houston 👏

Dustin, I respect how professional you are and how much care you take with the vehicles. Just a quick, probably dumb question, can you not use the tow hooks on the truck to winch it up?
If you hook that far forward, the back tires probably won’t make it onto the bed, especially on a longer wheelbase truck like this, and the winch will be pulling down on the hook and suspension.

Consider this an instance of GM become "Tesla-fied," and having problems in the process. It was Tesla who pioneered the idea of "over the air" electronic updates in cars. Assuming the updates always worked properly--which is a question--it could be a good way of continuously improving one's car without needing to buy a new model. But all the OTA updates in the world are no good if they drain the battery in the process, and that's the problem with this truck. If we accept the premise that OTA updates are here to stay, it gives rise to the question of whether the timing of the updates could be changed so they don't drain the vehicle's battery. I should hope there's a setting somewhere in the vehicle's online menus, alongside those for the infotainment functions, that can address this issue. If there isn't that kind of setting now, then GM should put it in. Given the alternative, I doubt very many drivers would complain if downloading OTA updates could be limited to when the engine is running, so the updates don't strain the electrical system and drain the battery. Your move, GM...and you'd better move fast. These Duramax trucks are a big part of what pays the bills for GM these days.
This crap has been happening for a few yrs even the ford's were having that problem

Cheaping out on things to make stock price higher and thus CEO pay is WAY more likely than gov't schemes. The cost cutting isnpushed down to suppliers and they push down on their suppliers and then they offshore the manufacture of bits and pieces.

You talk to much shit about GM. I have owned GM my whole 45 years of driving, and they are great vehicles. The problem is the Tech that is required now days for the EPA, and GM and all the others get their Tech from suppliers. I have watched many of your videos, and it's always a problem with a Electronic component. If it was mechanical with the drive train or something that GM manufactures themselves and have control over that, I would agree with all the bad talk you give GM. Did you ever think that the supplier is at fault? And that GM cannot get a compatible part to fix or recall and fix the fuel modules? GM does not want this going on, and I assure you they don't want their customers stranded or upset and are trying to find a solution. I do agree, all vehicles are way overpriced and have way too much crap on them, much of it is forced upon them by the Government. The vehicles mechanically are great, they drive very smooth, like most other vehicles today. One thing that I do not like at all, and that is the Electronic Shifters in any vehicle. I like your videos, but please think what is really the problem and who is really at fault before shaming and picking on one brand of vehicles. And I assure you GM is working diligently with their suppliers to rectify this problem, and most likely trying to find another supplier with a suitable replacement for these fuel modules. They will fix the problem!

These trucks have tons of issues. I’ve had 2 of them 22 and 23 and both had mechanical and electrical issues.
Still trying to figure out what was wrong with just using a key…
@Travis12861 :
It's all about the "WOW" factor for many stupid people. Just like obnoxious LED headlights. Stupid.
Also, anything manufacturers can do to make things cheaper to manufacture, they'll do.
Why? So that they can generate higher profits. Greed my friend, GREED.
Nowadays, nobody gives a rat's ass about convenience, reliability, longevity, or costs to the consumer. If they did, they wouldn't be building the trash that they build today, passing it off as quality, with enormous sticker prices.
All they care about is lining their corporate pockets and building trash that fails as quickly as possible, so that you'll buy another new one.
I will never buy a vehicle if it doesn't have a key. My newest vehicle is a 2009. And most of my other vehicles are all from the 1990s through early 2000s.
They ALL have ignition & door keys.
Wow another new truck 😮
It does not start but look at the bright side ... it has a huge touch screen you can watch movies on while waiting for a tow truck.
I have been buying Tahoes and Escalades for my business truck for several years, using a Dodge / Ram diesel trucks for 25 years as personal truck. Been thinking strongly about trading in the current Tahoe for a 2500 duramax instead of getting another SUV. But the recent videos by several people about the new duramax trucks makes me question trying a duramax.
@chrism2042 :
AVOID modern GM. You already know that the RAM Cummins diesels are still the best trucks going. Why not stick with those?
P.S. If you're smart, you do a full delete on whatever you buy, so that you can enjoy a more dependable & reliable, more fuel efficient, and more powerful vehicle with greater longevity.
Even without the mfgr warranty, who cares?! Simply put, the amount of money you will SAVE from no downtime, better fuel economy, & no more DEF fluid, will all far exceed any repair work you may have to foot the bill for.
@@turbodiesel4709 - I have owned Dodge / Ram trucks with cummins engines for 25 years, no major problems with any of the 3 I have owned. But Stellantis are losing their mind with truck prices and they seem to be cutting some corners on new trucks. As far as deleting, not my thing. Back when I was horseback riding on a regular basis, I was around so many guys towing with diesel trucks and the horror stories of issues after they delete and tuned trucks. Last year my friends nephews 2021 F350 powerstoke grenaded itself a year after he deleted it. Put all the original parts back on it and attempted to get Ford to fix it under warranty, that cost him a new crate engine out of pocket.
I love what you are doing mat
The 10 speed transmissions are due to fail because of the trans control valve as well.
This is exactly why I don’t want a new truck. I’ll stick to my 02 F350
I don't mind updates. However, I prefer to be the one to install the update. Download the file onto a USB stick, plug it in, update. As long as the vehicle has a built in reset switch that can be only activated by the key of the vehicle. I'd be very happy.
how did you walk the truck forward? did you use the stinger?
GM Quality At It's Finest 😂😂😂
Cant believe they found a way to make daggum diesels unreliable
@texasdarkhorse6227 :
Thank all of the d-bag "greenie" politicians. It mainly began with the overly-restrictive & very unreliable mandatory emissions controls circa 2012-ish, pointlessly strangling the life out of everyone's diesel engines.
From there on, things have spiraled out of control with the addition of more & more totally needless electronic controls in ALL vehicles.
Nothing wrong with ANY of my "older" diesel pickups:
- 1999 & 2002 5.9L Cummins engines in my Dodge Ram BR2500HD 4x4 pickup trucks.
- 1990 7.3L IDI Navistar engine in my Ford F-350 SRW 4x4.
My buddy runs a 1998 6.5L GM/Detroit in his Chevy C3500HD dually.
We don't need, nor want zero-emissions, luxury, "rocket ships".
We need reliable & dependable, fuel efficient, AFFORDABLE work trucks.
Sadly, automotive manufacturers stopped making decent trucks by the early 2010's... & arguably sooner.
@@turbodiesel4709 i was still clinging to hope around ’09 but once I saw a base model truck for 60k I was over it all.
Fully loaded trucks running 108k and in the shop with catastrophic failure at 30k miles
“New” V8 cummins diesels that fail at 150k miles and cost 25k to replace the engine and no parts available to rebuild
Still working on getting a diesel pickup but daggum i may just buy an 06 dually and be done
My son drives a Chevy Dura Max work van with 300,000 miles 2006 LBZ. First DuraMax pre emission. No DEF. Fluid. No CP4 high pressure pump either .
My 2012 purrs like a kitten.
I was scrolling and scrolling through your videos and I can't seem to find the videos of you towing broken down brand new Toyotas.
You making Towing look really hard. I do it all day every day and by the time you hook up to your vehicle, I’ll be gone how long you’ve been doing this
Can't ya hook your winch up to the front tow hooks?
You could, but then you’d be pulling down straight on the front suspension by the time it got all the way up to the winch, and the back tires would probably be hanging off the bed if you didn’t wanna crush the front suspension.
Those aren’t “tow” hooks. They’re recovery points for if you get stuck in the mud.
@Towtruck_Dustin Ah, makes sense, thanks
That High Country is top of the food chain trim level. The EPA killed the diesel engine. It's a diesel, they are made to smoke! I have an Auto Start/Stop Eliminator on my 2023 Jeep Wrangler to get rid of that insipid auto start/stop. After a Jeep update through my radio, I had to reboot the Eliminator to get it working again.
So the over the air software updates messes up the vehicles ECU and drains the battery down.
Simply jumping the vehicle off and getting it started and able to drive still leaves a corrupt ECU on board.
Correct?
So the software will need further update by the dealer, manufacture to correct the problem to fix the ECU?
Is that it?
Continue owning my 2010 f150 has a key and runs awesome will keep it forever!
Keep that old lady . 2015 and up are junky . I regretted that I sold my 2000 and bought a 2016 . Too many apps to go wrong
Battery may be shot. The new AGM battery’s don’t die a slow death like the lead acid ones do. They short out internally and then display erratic behavior and operation. AGM batteries are about $300 ea and should last longer but if you get a bad one a year is not unusual.
The mirrors didn't unfold which isn't normal, bad update seems possible
@wjtinatl :
Yup, it's the same old crap. Stick with the good ole lead acid batteries and have less problems. Go figure!
That said, from the reading & research I've done, it seems to be a common problem with an failed software update issue, where the computer stays on, creating a parasitic load and draining the batteries dead.
Therefore, it wouldn't make any difference what type of batteries are being used.
I have an older dodge Cummins that's been really good to me. Has over half a million miles, quite a bit of rust that I've fixed up this year, but it hasn't given me much issue apart from some ball joints and water pump and a couple other things. But I remember being in the dealership buying that thing new, looking at the sticker price of 50k and thinking damn am I nuts? And here we are 17 years later and these trucks are 100k. I was looking at a new powerstroke about a month ago and damn it was a nice truck but it just wasn't 100k nice. That goes for any of em. They're just not worth that kind of money, doesn't matter what new fang dangled gadgets they come with. Or maybe i'm just getting old.
🎶 Throw your cash away on a Sh1tVerolet, and you'll find yourself walking home the same day 🎶
the 1990 models that they made Chevrolet they should have left them like they made them and not change nothing that had the 411 years and the Jasper engines in them and the Jasper transmissions they should have just left them like they made them they were a wonderful beautiful truck❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ you can crank it up and drive to Canada and come back
From what I heard Duramax diesel Alison transmission used to be good but GM fully owns both companies now.
My 2013 GMC rock solid every day, but limited electronics and good ole 6.0!
Dustin was that role back a new truck when you got in it ?
I bet the battery is dead and they didn't check battery voltage, my ram 1500 did the same thing, clicking of starter changed batteries fixed
Of course that's the problem it's been stated over and over again. The cause of the problem is the issue. The computer won't shut off and the batteries get drained dead. Apparently the truck needs a software update / upgrade to repair the problem. Simply recharging the battery will only temporarily fix, and once the truck sits parked for a few hours, the batteries will just be dead again. The actual failure term is called a "parasitic load".
Have you tried disconnecting the battery(s) and reconnecting them again?
Ok the battery was just dead ok.
My brothers 2023 had an issue like this but disconnecting and reconnecting fixed it.
I’m not a mechanic. It’s not my job to fix it. I just get to those who can. If I start messing with stuff, that’s how you get a costly damage claim for whatever is wrong with the vehicle.
I’ll keep my bare bones/basic 2013 chevy 🇺🇸 hd2500 gas 6.0 with 210k 👊 & still tugging strong !!
Seems like Chevy trucks are having worse reliability issues than Jeep.
That’s why i look old school non electronic crap yes you mechanical things go wrong. But your vehicle can be moved towed without issues
That truck requires the Internet to even start up.
My 2002 GMC 4X4 DURAMAX IS STILL RUNNING FINE WITH 75% LESS JUNK ELECTRONICS 😊
