When my budget is tight I often turn to noodle dishes. Soups, bowls, Italian pasta recipes, whatever. They are all budget friendly or can easily be adjusted. And quick and easy to prepare, too.
Had breakfast with a friend this morning. Came home hungry for a sweet desert and came across this recipe. I trimmed the recipe down to one third so I only used one egg, 33 grams sugar, 30 grams cake flour, 1/4tsp vanilla, 1.5 grams baking powder, 8 grams oil. Mixed all in a 1 cup measuring cup so mixing and pouring was easy. Poured the batter into 4 mini brioche molds and steamed for 10 minutes. Start to finish was 15 minutes and I ended up with 4 absolutely gorgeous sponge cakes, perfect for two people. Topped them with a little caramel syrup ... Delicious! My new favorite desert! Thank you Mandy!
Well duh - GREAT idea! And one so obvious that I'm worrying why I didn't think of it! No, I just sat here at 6am thinking my hubby and I didn't need so many cakes when we're trying to loose weight....but 4 little tiny cakes, without turning on the oven.....done! Thanks for the excellent suggestion - might whip 'em up right now to go with my coffee!
Baking that even I can do! Hooray! And I love the new things you’re doing with the video production. Graphics and music are so cute, and the editing is quite professional!
Freshly steamed and still warm with cold vanilla sauce and strawberries on the side. That's bound to be good and will be my dessert the coming weekend.
MANDY! Thank you for this. My mom used to make this for me. Her recipe had a little bit of rice flour in it which made the texture a bit chewier, but I'm gonna try your recipe first. Looks delicious! She also made a modified one for holidays. It was green so I think it had a couple drops of pandan flavoring.
I always enjoy steamed cakes. This recipe looks so easy to make and looks like it can handle syrups like the Italian dessert rum baba. So it could be the base for many flavours or combinations that would soak into the cake.
This is excellent. The little sponge cakes for the strawberry desserts are rediculously priced. Almost 50 cents each. I don't have a steamerpot but, I think I can turn an alluminum pie tin upside down in my soup pot. Time to do some experiments 🤣 Thank you Mandy. Have a great day 😍💞🐲👍🙏
omg Mandy these cakes are my new favourite thing! The only small containers I had were half-pint canning jars and I steamed them in my bamboo steamer in the wok just like steamed buns, and they came out as the most adorable little puffy-topped cake towers, I love them. Thanks for all your easy and fun recipes!
A better substitute for cake flour is seven parts AP flour, with one part corn starch. The main point of cake flour is that it has less gluten, which produces a more delicate crumb.
So good!!! I made these tonight and served them with mixed berries and cream - but they are delicious on their own, as well. So much better than grocery store shortcake tarts. 👍👍👍
I am trying to make these sponge cakes now. Hopefully it would be successful this time. I have been trying multiple recipes which they used different flours and turned out not how i wanted. My grandma used to make these when i was young. This cake makes me miss her more 😢
Seems like a fun recipe to play with different flavors. The look of them immediately made me crave a lemon drizzle sponge cake. Might take a bit of tweaking to get perfect, but if it doesn't quite work out - hey, it only cost a dollar.
I literally just got done telling another channel I watch I gave up starch until the end of the year. Then you both make these delicious breads & cakes it's not fair 😭 I will enjoy it in January thanks for the recipe 👍🏻
What a fun recipe! And I liked the editing style of this video :) I might try this later today, could I use pandan extract instead of vanilla for a slightly different flavor? Thank you for sharing this!
I’m trying this now but I adjusted the amount of sugar. 1/4 c is already sweet for me. Probably 1/2 c will make my teeth all come off as it’s way sweeter.
Can you advise me on how to properly re-season the woks you sell? A friend left water in mine and now the inside is more gray than black. I have two of your woks and the thought of having only one is not a pleasant thought. Thank you kindly. P.S. I use one or both woks almost every day.
Mandy, can you please do BBQ Pork Buns next with Char-su meat? I know you did a Pork Bun recipe but BBQ Pork Buns are very popular here. I would love to see how you make them!
I'm curious -- why do you not include milk as part of the ingredients in your recipe? Some videos hv milk added to the recipe. What difference does it make if milk is added? Btw, I've tried your recipe 2 times already and I love the end-result but am just curious why some recipes list milk as an ingredient. Thanks
Do you know any buddge-friendly recipes? Leave a comment and share with me!

Yummy!
Potato and cabbage soup is cheap even if you put a couple of slices of bacon in it for extra flavor. Oh I'd add a pinch of salt to the cake batter.
@gsn1a2a3b And you won't tell us your secret?
@gsn1a2a3b We won't tell anyone 😎
I'm not vegan and the only beef substitute I know of is seitan. Not much seasoning power in that, though.

Tried this and it filled 3 Pioneer Woman ramekins 1/3 of the way. Came out spongy and delicious! I'll have to do the full recipe next time. 😁❤️
thanks for the recipe breakdowm. much appreciated.

Made this for breakfast today. Simpler than other recipies I've used in the past, but dang good. Yummy! Thanks for sharing.

I don’t think this lady realizes she’s a hero to many
I just love Mandy so much.... success to you!
I just made these, and it was fast and easy, and they were delicious. Thanks for the recipe and a new use for my steamer!

If you have a footed cake rack that fits the pot they work great
Exactly what I was thinking--perfect for strawberry shortcakes!
These cute little cakes look so delicious!
I can't wait to try it looks delicious

Thanks for the recipe. These little cakes must be delicious with vanilla custard! 😋👍
So yummy. My mother would make these but would also add custard powder for flavor....Thanks for sharing!!!

Thanks for such a cute and simple sweet recipe.
They look spectacular and adorable.

Awesome recipe Mandy, it’s cheap, easy to make and delicious, that’s my kind of recipe 👍😋
Seems like a fun recipe to play with different flavors. The look of them immediately made me crave a lemon drizzle sponge cake. Might take a bit of tweaking to get perfect, but if it doesn't quite work out - hey, it only cost a dollar.
Try zesting a lemon and put the zest in the cake and use the juice and some powdered sugar for the glaze. It works for sugar cookies too.
So beautiful. I would love to try that.
Great recipe! The cake is fluffy and looks very delicious! 😋
Look very delicious 🤤 😋 I love sponge cake
I literally just got done telling another channel I watch I gave up starch until the end of the year. Then you both make these delicious breads & cakes it's not fair 😭 I will enjoy it in January thanks for the recipe 👍🏻

What a fun recipe! And I liked the editing style of this video :) I might try this later today, could I use pandan extract instead of vanilla for a slightly different flavor? Thank you for sharing this!
Yes you can!
Look very easy and pretty.. I love your voice.
I bet this would work in an instant pot! I will try it!
Snazzy editing and a fluffy, amazing looking cake! Excited to try this; thanks Mandy 🥰
This looks so good! Will it still turn out if you use gluten-free flour?
I’m trying this now but I adjusted the amount of sugar. 1/4 c is already sweet for me. Probably 1/2 c will make my teeth all come off as it’s way sweeter.
Going to try it. Have figure out how to steam it since I don't have a steamer pot/
Loved the recipe 😍🥰 thank you!!! Can you share where your steamer is from? 😊
Thanks for the simple recipe and looks yummy sponge cake. By the way, where did you get the steamer cookware?
thk u....looks like a winner
I love y recept...but i would have some citron in it abso .love I try 🥰
Good cooking skill!✅🆗
What am I missing? How do you get them to tilt? I've watched the video three times and am so confused.
How will it taste the next day? How do we store leftovers?
Just in time for strawberry season.
could i try this with stevia? will it have a noticeable difference on the texture and taste? thx
Mandy, do you have a recipe on Portuguese egg tarts. It’s so tricky to make, the pastry be like raw and the egg custard over cooked.
Hi Mandy, do you have Pandan cake recipe you can share with us please?
Ah yes perfect for strawberry shortcake!
3rd time watching. Now thinking lemon and poppyseed.
I bet it would be great with some Nutella.
Is it really to get the same result without using sugar?
is it possible to alter the recipe to chocolate instead? if so, what do i need to do? thanks
wonder if this would go with clotted cream and jam?
I just made it again another easy to make dish.
Can i use rice flour instead?
Is this the same type of cake as 南洋大师傅鸡蛋糕? I've been trying to find a recipe for 南洋大师傅鸡蛋糕 for so long!
THANKS :)
Hello. I spotted an error in your recipe in the description details. You stated 1tsp of baking powder, but in your video you said 1.5tsp.
做得很好
I'm making this for my lunch date today.. Can you please confirm if I can make these in my idli steamer ?
Also, how do they tilt? Is the steamer tilted ? 🤔
Any steamer will work. the steamer doesn't tilt them. They will tilt naturally while steaming. I don't know the science.
Can I use muffin pan
Yum
What oven temperature if I would like to bake it? At 200°c for 15 mins ?
This recipe doesn't work in the oven.
@@SoupedUpRecipes thank you

Btw, I've tried your recipe 2 times already and I love the end-result but am just curious why some recipes list milk as an ingredient. Thanks
