    Thank you for that video. My friend bought an old Firebird and the first thing he did was bend the hood when we got it home. I was actually oiling the door hinges and latches when he tried to shut the hood. We need to replace one of the springs and this definitely helps!

    I use a chain and hook the end link on the spring then you control of the spring all the time.

    That looked easy but on my Chevelle, the hood hinges were painted the same color as the car when I realized the springs were junk. I bought new springs and realized I was about to scratch the heck out of them trying to get them changed. So I made a little home made spring remover made from a piece of pipe, a threaded rod, angle iron, and eye bolts. It worked great, and allowed me to expand the springs so I can paint them with the spring expanded so the paint would get in between the coils. I have to take a picture of it or maybe a video, your way is much faster and easier but could scratch painted hinges.

      +Toms Chevelle Send us a pic and some instructions and we will do one and credit you! Sounds like a great idea. When we are doing it on finished hinges, we'll get some scrap leather (an old belt) and use that at the pry point.

    There is a Hook type of screwdriver out there that hook the spring & you pull it toward you. I got one at Auto Zone. That way you save your fingers an hand.

    I have an F100, the rear of the hood sticks up when closed. the hood is adjusted to it's lowest point. It is the slop in the pivots of the hinge that allow the rear to bump up. I am considering getting a shop press to squash the rivets down better. Is this an OK fix, or should I replace them with some after market hinges?

      You could possibly slot the hinge a little. We may do a video on this on Manic Mechanic as our F100 has the same issue.

      I'd like to see it. I am not familiar with slotting hinges, and could not find info from a search. Thanks

      OK, We'll get a Manic Mechanic rolling on that.

    My Mom's newer Jeep does not have anything to help hold the lid up except a prop. She is a little weak because she is older, so it's difficult to open for her. Can you add something like this aftermarket to a car that never had them?

      @AutoRestoMod  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There may be a gas strut replacement for the jeep that you can check into

    Do both of the springs have to go into the front hole of hinge from the top?

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time, yes.

      +AutoRestoMod Muscle Car Resto and Modifications I have a 1977 C10 Pickup and I have seen that on the left side it goes through the top. The other side seems to go through the bottom.

      We'd recommend putting them back the way the factory did them.

    Will a weak spring g keep the back of the hood from going all the way down? I adjusted mine as far as it will go. And it's still almost a half inch to high in the back. I think it's the hinges.

      Bro this is happening to my old car. The back of the hood is raised on one side and it doesn’t go down. Did you fix yours please let me know what u did

    • @hughphillips67Mustang
      @hughphillips67Mustang 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @terrywilliams9912 I did. I used my original hinges. You raise the front of the hinges as high as they will go. And lower the back of the hinges as low as they will go. I know it sounds backwards. But that's how you fix it.

    can this be done without removing the hood

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Edward Habuda Possibly, but we'd rather have less weight on the springs via the hood coming off.

    What type of lubricant do you recommend on the hood hinges? I’m going to do this this weekend

    There are safer ways to put that spring on, and that hinge is toast, it needs to be replaced.

    hey great but all i need is hood springs for a 49 caddy 62 series

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your best bet would be New Old Stock.

      what is new old stock?

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parts that were on the manufacturers shelves back in the 1940-50 and never sold. There are companies that specialize in Cadillac New Old Stock. Hit the internet and type in Cadillac NOS or Cadillac New Old Stock. I'm sorry that we don't have an A+ rated dealer in Caddy parts, we haven't done one of these early cars. Let us know how that goes!
