SALINAS - Being one of eight teams that was undefeated seven weeks into the season wasn’t an accident.
So, when Hartnell fell from the unbeaten ranks two weeks ago, it didn’t necessarily mean the magic on the football field had run out.
A reboot? Perhaps.
The Panthers - with the benefit of an extra week to heel up and recharge their batteries - regrouped Saturday, using late game heroics from Jhymir Pearson for a wild 50-49 win over Los Medanos at Rabobank Stadium.
“We were disappointed with some things in our loss we did not do right,” Hartnell coach Matt Collins said. “We tried to get some of that stuff fixed during the bye week. We didn’t know how we’d respond to the deflation of the loss.”
Pearson, who came into the game leading Hartnell in multi-purpose yards, rushing yards and touchdowns, added three more to his resume. Yet, his biggest trip to the end zone came on a two-point conversation with 19 seconds left.
“We had some momentum,” Collins said. “Once we scored, the quarterback (Adam Shaffer) turned and said he wanted to go for two. I turned to our OC (John Guttierez) and said ‘the kids want to go for two, lets do it’.”
With Los Medanos stacking the box, Guttierez called for an off-tackle sweep to Pearson, who slipped to the outside and powered his way into the end zone.
“There was still 19 seconds left,” Collins said. “The Los Medanos quarterback leads the state in passing. He’s got two power receivers. But we had a group back there that knocked it down and we got out of there with a win.”
At 7-1 overall, Hartnell, who fell 40-20 to MPC on Oct. 21, is one of six teams from the American Division in California to have seven or more wins with two games left.
“All we can do is control how we play,” Collins said. “We still have two conference games. But beating a team like these matters for several reasons, including momentum going into next week.”
The Panthers, who close the season hosting Cabrillo next Saturday before traveling to 7-1 San Jose City, sit a game behind the Jaguars and MPC in the American Golden Coast Conference.
Hartnell, who held as much as a 14-point lead in the first half, found itself trailing for the first time with 4:42 left when the Mustangs ran off 14 straight points, using a pick six to take a 49-42 lead.
“How would we respond after the pick six?” Collins said. “We had led the entire game. It was an awesome response. I couldn’t be happier for these kids. We took the next step.”
Pearson had touchdown runs of 4 and 1 yard earlier in the game and finished with 186 rushing yards, while Shaffer added a touchdown run and connected with Isaiah Durate and Max Castro for touchdowns. Spencer Gorgulho also tossed a touchdown to Durate.
“It was a bit of a shootout,” Collins said. “We wanted to control the clock and keep their offense off the field. Thing don’t always go as planned.”
