CUPERTINO - From a historical standpoint, any of the footballs used on Saturday will be a keepsake - with at least one likely ticketed for the school’s trophy case, a reminder of Hartnell College’s legacy.
The Panthers have matched their entire win total from last season with a 3-0 start this season. Saturday they recorded the program’s 500th win.
While each week is a grind for a program with 32 players, Hartnell is finding ways to succeed, as Adam Shaffer accounted for three touchdowns in a 28-24 win at De Anza of Cupertino.
“I didn’t know until after the game,” said Hartnell coach Matt Collins, who celebrated his birthday a day earlier. “That is when we all found out about it (500). It’s a historical achievement. I’m just thrilled to be a part of this era’s success.”
The longest-tenured football coach at Hartnell, Collins is in his 17th year with the program - moving to within one win of 90 for his career.
The last time Hartnell started a season 3-0 was in 2018, when it opened the year with seven straight wins, finishing 8-3, with a bowl berth.
“We play with a little chip on our shoulder,” Collins said. “The only people that believe in us are in this locker room. We are the team where everyone thinks they can get a win. It’s motivation. Our approach is not who we play, but how we play.”
While one-possession games are adding to Collins’ anxiety, the Panthers have been clutch in pressure situations on both sides of the ball in a three-point win over Yuba and in a four-point decision over De Anza.
Hartnell has trailed in each of its first three games, using a late fourth-quarter touchdown to beat Yuba, while outscoring De Anza 21-3 to open the second half to erase a 17-14 deficit.
“It’s a resilient group,” Collins said. “The coaches did a great job in adjusting in the second half. The players believe. They are having fun. That’s part of the deal. You have to enjoy going to practice and enjoy grinding.”
