2004 RetroSkins Highlights: Minnesota Vikings vs Washington Redskins

  • In the 2004 season finale, one team was playing for pride, the other for a playoff birth. You wouldn't be faulted for getting them confused while watching this game. The Redskins smothering defense was (for once) paired with fairly efficient offense, while the Vikings stumbled through most of this one getting nipped by untimely penalties and rundown by the Redskins punishing rushing attack. Patrick Ramsey appeared to be firming up his status as the starting QB of the future (nope) while Ladell Betts made the most of a rare start (Clinton Portis out injured) and Sean Taylor (sigh...) dished out the hurt on defense. A cosmetic last-second Vikings TD made the score look close, but this day belonged to Joe Gibbs' Redskins from start to finish, as Gibbs improved to 8-0 against Minnesota in the first-ever meeting between these teams at FedEx Field.
    In the end, it was a happy ending for everyone. Despite the loss, the Vikes did manage to back into the playoffs and, despite losing 7 of their previous 10 games and 20 of their prior 22 contests outside, Minnesota staged an upset win over Green Bay at Lambeau Field in the wild card round the following week.
    HQ captured from a beautiful DVR (remember those?) to VHS (and those?) recording with Bill Maas and Sam Rosen on the call from a chilly FedEx Field.

    This game was memorable to me because of the Sean Taylor/Randy Moss matchups. The W was great too!

    This defense was so tough and fun to watch back then. This was the last team we had that you could take seriously on the defensive side.

    Thank you! Always enjoy watching the Gibbs 2.0 games, Although not as glorious as his first go around there still were some good games in 04-07

    Nate Burleson years ago when he was hosting GMFB, told a story about Sean Taylor in this game. He said that most of the time, he could care less about the safeties because he felt he could outrun him. But he said Taylor was different. He admitted that when he saw Taylor coming at him, he made a pure business decision to get out of bounds as quickly as possible. And he said that Sean told him that he was gonna get him next time. I could be wrong, but it looks like 23:40 is the play.

    I remember working at the stadium this game. The crowd was definitely on fire that game!

    A redesigned Redskins logo introduced in 1972 was proposed by Walter Wetzel, a former Blackfoot tribal chairman and past president of the National Congress of American Indians, and was modeled after the likeness on the Buffalo nickel.

    04 redskins team was scrappy and played hard. They did not use the shotgun formation all year. Gibbs was still stuck in his way many believed the game passed him by. Gibbs shutdown all his critics when he made the playoffs in the next season and won a playoff game. At the time he had more playoff wins than bill Belichick

    Nice video. I found myself grimacing at times like it was a live game, even though this game was almost 20 years ago. How time flies!
    One thing that perplexed me was there were no shots, at least none that I remember, of Joe Gibbs on the sideline. The only shot of any Redskins coach was Gregg Williams. I couldn't remember if Gibbs was HC of Washington in 04 or not. I did remember Sean Taylor was drafted under Gibbs so I was happy when the announcer mentioned him. I would have loved to see Joe in the video.

    I remember this game, I was a Junior in high school, and I was flying home from visiting my brothers in Rhode Island for New Years, waiting out a flight delay on Independence Air, this was the game Randy Moss walked off the field before the game was over

      Sean Taylor was the heart of that defense. When he died, the heart was gone.

    Does anybody remember if Patrick Ramsey was a Joe Gibbs pick or did he inherit him? Ramsey was a former #1 pick and seemed to have talent.

    This just reminds me of how the top of screen score strip,which was created for their NASCAR coverage,ruined a full decade of FOX Sports football and baseball visuals. Too much clutter,on the screen,ruined the telecast.

    • @RetroSkins
      @RetroSkins  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree. The broadcasts are intensely visually cluttered. It’s only gotten worse.

    Ramsey was trash. Another wasted high pick

    • @RetroSkins
      @RetroSkins  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Apparently he was a very smart young man, and a champion javelin thrower. He got off to a bad start being drafted into the Spurrier system (was there a system?)

      @@RetroSkinsafter watching this game he actually looked decent but overall he was average at best and nothing close to a top draft pick. We would ultimately trade for Brunell the next season. I miss these hard nosed Skins teams of the mid 2000s

    • @RetroSkins
      @RetroSkins  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not quite. Brunell was already on the ‘04 team. Ramsey stayed thru ‘05.

      Ramsey had great potential, great arm strength remember who our coach was Steve spurier, a pass happy coach he and the coach broke the Cowgirls 8-9 game winning streak, against us from1999-2004 one of my favorite Redskins QB's HTTR-C

    • @blackpanther7619
      @blackpanther7619 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      He wasn't trash ..he was ruined by Spurrier's wide open system and got beaten too death, which led to his demise
