    i bought a carlinkit video box for traveling. we love it! i bought it for when i travel with my children, but yesterday we went to my father’s house 3 hrs away and my husband decided to watch a movie(i was driving and listening to it) on our drive home yesterday while stuck in traffic. it made a irritating time for my husband go by so much faster and i didn’t have to listen to his complaining, which made for a much nicer 3 hour drive.

    They missed the mark on the SOC selection. The qc 450 is feature less. Qc 460 should be the minimum for quality and features.

    Nice Review, I have been watching several videos of yours, and the videos has been amazing, and I see you use the same car for testing these dongles, But I do have some questions
    1. is your VW Golf Infotainment system screen factory installed or Aftermarket?
    2. Does this dongle work on all factory OEM cars?

    • @CarPlayLife
      @CarPlayLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for watching.
      The stereo in my Golf is an Alpine X902D-G7 aftermarket CarPlay & Android Auto compatible receiver.
      There are people saying it doesn’t work with their factory systems. I hear newer Golf factory systems struggle with this dongle. Golf 7.5/8 systems most likely.

    Could be great to do a updated face to face compare between the MMB and the Apple Pie ones.

    • @CarPlayLife
      @CarPlayLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I try to compare to newer Android OS dongles as I go. As newer dongles release, we start to see faster processors and UI that starts to be more seamless transition between Android and CarPlay functions. But overall, it is a bit clunky when you have to use a Wifi hotspot for Android OS side.

    What was not covered:
    1. USB Drive function does not play the sound if the movie is with AC3/DTS soundtrack.
    2. PhoneCast works with a delay and if you play TH-cam the sound is not synced with the picture.
    These two points make this device absolute waste of money for the guys like me, who buy it only for these two functions.
    Manufacturers of these devices know about these issues but do not care/cannot fix them :)

    • @CarPlayLife
      @CarPlayLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best experience for TH-cam is from the android side and it’s own app. Using phone cast should play in its own buffer, this reduces the audio delay for video to acceptable level. If you still see it being mirrored and not in the software player that gets buffered there’s something wrong there.
      I would expect it not to playback dts soundtrack, really.

    The switch between android auto and CARPLAY takes sooo long! and usually always freezes! and I have to unplug the box and sometimes even restart the car because the box just does not want to boot up or says it cannot read my phone! On a 2020 Hyundai sonata limited

      If it is a compatibility issue, the only way to get it working is to try an update with it. Now unfortunately to update it, it needs to also work for you to manually enable the update. I don't know if you can just plug the dongle into a wall adapter with the update files installed on an inserted USB drive.

    A few questions, I have a 2021 Mercedes G550 which uses the Comand system and only offers wired CarPlay…
    1). To get this working properly, do I need to delete/remove the Bluetooth connection that my iPhone previously used for music/phone?
    2). Do I only need to use the tethering from the MMB to my iPhones Personal Hotspot, if I want to use the android features?
    3). Do I completely delete my Mercedes wired CarPlay settings from the CarPlay starting on my phone?
    4). Can I use the USB on the MMB box if, for instance, my wife is using my car and her phone isn’t wirelessly setup to the MMB box?

    • @CarPlayLife
      @CarPlayLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Hopefully I can answer these…
      1. The box is standalone, so no you do not need to remove the BT connection unless you wish to continue to play/use your iPhone with your system.
      2. Yes, you only need it for android apps that require a internet connection to download or stream content.
      3. No you can keep it. In case you wish to go back to wired carplay and keep your icon layout.
      Unless you encounter pairing issues. If you do remove the Mercedes profile from carplay.
      4. The usb is just for media playback from a usb drive or it can also be used for pass through power. It will not revert to wired carplay when connected to this port. You will need to remove the dongle if you wish to return to a wired carplay connection.
      Hope this helps.

    Great video ! I got two questions about the wireless CarPlay function :
    1. When setting wireless CarPlay as default, does it always takes around 32sec to boot into CarPlay screen after entering the car ?
    2. If there’s always 2 iPhones linked to the wireless CarPlay, how would the process be after entering the car ? Would the dongle ask you which iPhone to connect to? And if you want to switch to another iPhone, does it requires another reboot and takes another 30sec ?
    Thanks :)

    • @CarPlayLife
      @CarPlayLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Thanks for watching. To answer your questions:
      1. Yes it’s roughly around the same boot time. This will vary per system it is used on (the wireless CarPlay mode). My alpine is old and on some factory CarPlay systems they can boot much faster.
      2. It will always boot up on the last iPhone that was connect, if it’s also present and available to connect. If you want to connect the second phone you’ll need to make sure the first has either CarPlay switched off or Bluetooth is off so that the dongle seeks the second phone. If it has already booted into the first phone you just have to enter into media cast (android os) and select CarPlay to get the device menu, from here you can select the secondary phone to connect to, but then it will require a reboot to get into android and again to get into CarPlay.
      Hope this helps.

    • @CarPlayLife
      @CarPlayLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the MMB Plus it only does CarPlay and casting/mirroring over personal hotspot. So there is now android OS layer as such, meaning it will boot up much the same time (check my other video for that) and switching is the same too because media cast requires a reboot from CarPlay and again once you select the second device.
      No one has done switching device fast and smoothly, really. It’s better to get into practice of making the device/s ‘ready’ before turning the car on to save you all that boot time.

      You can’t put the USB A connector into the dongle, it’s output is only from the USB C end.
      Hope this helps.

    Hi, nice video just a quick question
    I have a Mercedes c class which doesn’t have CarPlay, I’m going to get it installed via a aftermarket box which fits in the centre console. Could this MMB box work with an aftermarket CarPlay installed or does it only work if your car has factory carplay already?
    I hope this makes sense lol

    • @CarPlayLife
      @CarPlayLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it does make sense. I think it would work, as all the dongle is looking for is CarPlay display connection, so this box should pass the CarPlay part that an Android OS dongle like this should connect to. However this box is another component in the timeline that it has to work with, so its 50/50 if it works with it well enough.
      Ideally you would look for a box for the Merc that also has the functionality that this MMB allows you to do. I think they might exist out there.

    Hi Anthony, love the video. My issue is that I have a 2013 Audi R8 V8 that does not have carplay. I just want to ask whether there is a module you can connect through a USB to get carplay using the existing head unit. Or do I need to purchase a complete new head unit. My preference is a module. Hope you can assist. I'm in Australia. Cheers.

      Nice wheels 👌🏻😌
      If you don’t want to do a full headunit swap, which is quite difficult for Audi I would imagine, then I would look for Audi specific modules to enable CarPlay. Have a look at what CarLinkit does here www.carlinkit.com/for-audi.html . There are a number of models that might be able to turn your existing system into a CarPlay one. I don’t know anything about these though so you will have to do your own research or reach out to their support team for more help on which one will work with your R8. Hope this helps.

    What's the GPS source in Wireless CarPlay mode vs Android OS? What's the audio delay like in Wireless CarPlay? Have they fixed it like they did with the MMB Dongle?

    • @CarPlayLife
      @CarPlayLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will try to use your own vehicles GPS but that’s not that reliable or well detected. So for android apps it would use either the GPS module that you would have to install, or use your mobile data to pin point you (not as good). For CarPlay it will continue to function using GPS from your iPhone or from your car if it can use / detect it.
      Audio delay will always be present because it is using WiFi and not Bluetooth. WiFi had a great latency. They get around it with the video playback because they buffer it first before displaying both video and audio.
      Hope that helps.

      You can changed the launcher in a way. I did it by accident when I tried to get an Android Auto emulator and it turned out to be a launcher and when I rebooted it asked me if I wanted to choose between them. So it looks possible.

      It is possible, but some launcher assume there is home button outside the screen which in this case there isn't. So you'll need something like airmouse to be able to return to home screen

    Hi
    Does the Google map application in the mmb box required GPS installation for it to work? Or it can work on itself for navigation?
    I am using android phone btw and android auto is not supported in my country at the moment.
    Thanks!

    • @CarPlayLife

      If you don’t use the GPS module the app will try its best to operate using mobile mast data and your mobile data connection. Similar to selecting locate me on Google maps in a browser on your desktop.
      If you want android auto on your CarPlay screen I recommend you try and get an Android 7 dongle because I couldn’t get AA to work on this Android 9.
      Personally, without the GPS module or if your car doesn’t support GPS, and you have to rely on mobile positioning, the experience isn’t that great and I wouldn’t want to rely on it.

    Seems buggy. Working for 10 days as expected. The reebooting when switching between Android OS to CarPlay is somewhat annoying but not a biggie. Then all of a sudden the car (KIA eNiro) doesn't recognize the MMB at all. I have changed the cable. No difference. CarPlay thetered works with my iPhone as before. But the MMB seems dead except from the blue LED flashing. Any suggestions trouble shooting this?

    • @CarPlayLife
      @CarPlayLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Annoying as this my sound. try leaving it in and powered for longer than you think. And I mean Minutes. It will likely do a few boot loops and then eventually get in. One you’re in do a factory reset.
      I’ve had this but when it didn’t boot up I had it connected and powered and I could tell between flashing, glowing led that it was likely doing a boot loop. I did some other things whilst it did this and it eventually got in but it took way longer than would have sat there waiting for it. So maybe it might work for you too?
      To spontaneous stop working, if you have not updated the dongle or iPhone, isn’t right.

      I would think so yes, just as long as you can use CarPlay wired on your system and the dongle doesn't work wirelessly with the system, it needs to be plugged into the Carplay USB port. I would think your system is able to do both wired and wireless connection for CarPlay.
