Detailed & through walkthrough of how to locate, and change the rear light bulb of a Smart Car (451 model). It can be quite intimidating for those that are not comfortable around electrics but it really is, very safe and easy to do.
The best bit of advice I can give is, take your time. I can do this in less than 5 minutes but, so can anyone. When you have followed the video to the point of removing the light board with all the bulbs/lamps on, practice reinstalling it without the cables connected… I couldn’t believe just how little effort was required once I was comfortable with how to place the light board and at what angles it will just POP back into place.
Final but of advice, get some light in the cavity. If you get light in there, you can see here the locating clip relates to the light board fitting hole… .
My local part store charge £6 to do this (approx. $9) ???

For those in the USA, my 2015 Smart ForTwo Electric uses the Sylvania 7528 for the top 2 bulbs and I believe the Sylvania 7506 for the bottom 2 bulbs.

Thanks for posting. I have maintained my wife's 2009 MHD Cabrio for a number of years and with no workshop manual available, people such as you who post videos are the only way to find out how to repair things. Has anyone ever changed and checked their gearbox oil?

Our 2010 pure's brake light works but the running light is out. will changing the bulb as you have described fix this issue or do we have another problem?
If you are USA it will possibly fix this… as stop lights (bulbs/lamps) are usually a two filament affair.

Quick Mind sorry I haven’t done this either. Lookup INVICTA SMART CAR CLUB UK they have a shop tab on their website I’m sure I saw some on there. They are a respectable group with lots of experience so I imagine they wouldn’t allow rogue shops on their site. Best of luck

Hi, only my third brake light is working. The two left and right rear brake lights do not work when brake pedal is pressed. But they do light up when dipped beam is turned on. What is the reason?
G5Fly common issue is brake light switch. Not done one in a while a bit fiddly but there is a video. Just search Smart 451 brake light switch replacement should find it

Hahah good question. This may vary country to country. Sorry can’t be specific.
I do have my vehicles setup on EBay garage and that tells me the right part for my car. Hope that helps

What is the middle bulb for? Mine doesn’t even have a bulb in it.
which country are you in? the middle bulb/lamp is for indicators in the UK

Okay, I am loosing my mind here. I have a 2008 451 that I love. But I'm having a problem. Right rear tail light (the one that us always on when the head lights are) works. But the right rear brake and indicator lights dont work, even though they use the same lightbulb. Reverse works fine.
I tried swapping bulbs, thinking it was odd that one filament in the bulb might not work, but got the same issue. I swapped the unit that the bulbs go into, and the new on behaved the same way.
I tried looking through it to see if I could discover what the problem was. I believe it has to be a problem in either the wiring or the plug itself because I can get the turn and brake lights to work properly while the bulb circuit board unit is out of the lights, but as soon as I start moving it around to try and install it, it stops working again. Is this a common problem? How do I resolve this?
sounds like an earthing problem sir! ... if you move the unit OUT of the housing and its operational, thats where the issue lays. look at the lamp cluster housing... see if there is any corrosion near any of the locating points... you've done some good sound diagnostics too..i cant suggest more... its nothing ive heard of as a "common problem". look up Evilution on google.. a huge wealth of detailed diagnostics and manuals.

@@smarte.r.1450 I will check eviloution. I thought earth/grounding as well, but it doesnt even always work when it's out of the housing. I have to fiddle with it to get to work out of it too

@@smarte.r.1450 thank you for the video. I changed my taillight (and headlight) last night after viewing your video. Turns out my model it has the 2 bulbs (not 3) one at the top and one at the bottom. For my Smart (a.k.a. Clifford, my big red dog), it looks like the bottom one is for the reverse light.
