I did start with Kindle Keyboard 3G. Then bought Kindle Paperwhite (3rd edition year 2015 4Gb version) and won 2018 Kindle Paperwhite Manga Edition (from Japan 32Gb version. 33 percent speed increase on page turns and fast-forward feature) what I am still using today.
Nice that's awesome, what an experience with the Kindle devices! I started with the Kindle PaperWhite about 5 or so years ago and have loved it ever since, but I ended up switching to the Oasis because I love the page turn buttons and unless another Kindle Oasis version comes out, I don't see myself ever switching to any other e-reader in the future, I love this one too much.
Great info. Am returning to kindle after a long hiatus. I had 3 kindle dx readers years ago. Purchased an amazon refurb Oasis, and despite a history of kindle use…there is a learning curve. Case is clear, so I can see the golden color, but my old dx case was a beautiful leather. Use audible for driving and have earbuds paired. Am appreciative of the buttons and based my kindle choice on amazon customer reviews. Getting used to my device. Thank you!!
That’s awesome, glad to hear you’re back to Kindle! Kindle Oasis is amazing and I hope you get used to it and enjoy it! And absolutely, thank you for watching and commenting, I really appreciate you!
Thanks for the thorough review, Michael. I've owned my Oasis 3 for 3.5 years and absolutely loved it. I do read 3+ hours daily and, unfortunately, I need the light at max brightness (with some warmth) in order to see without eye strain. My Oasis battery is now pretty much shot, seldom holding a charge for even one day. So, I'm tempted to replace my Oasis with a new one for the battery alone, realizing of course that its life will be similarly short. I agree with you completely regarding the ease of one-handed reading with buttons, especially for someone who often scrolls backwards. That isn't nearly as easy with one hand on the Paperwhite. I have a question for you: Since you own both the Oasis and newest Paperwhite, can you tell me how the screen brightness compares between the two devices? How pronounced is the difference between 25 LEDS (Oasis) and 17 LEDS (Paperwhite), especially for someone who is visually impaired? Thanks so much!
That’s a great question! I always thought the extra LEDs on the Oasis were just for more even lighting across the screen, but I just compared it to my wife’s new Kindle Paperwhite Signature and the Oasis was SIGNIFICANTLY brighter. Much more obviously brighter than I expected actually, so if you end up getting a new one and need a brighter screen, I would definitely recommend sticking with the Oasis!
Thanks so much for that side-by-side comparison and recommendation, Michael. Many users have claimed online they could see no difference in brightness between the two devices, but I doubted that could truly be accurate if the Oasis has 50 percent more LEDs than the Paperwhite. How I hope Amazon updates the nearly perfect Oasis versus phasing it out.
Absolutely! And I totally agree, I will be devastated if they ever get rid of the Oasis. That being said, it’s like 3 years overdue for an upgrade now, so I’ve been checking like every single week to see if a new model is out yet, hopefully they’ll release one for the holidays!
I’ve had kindles, all the way back to the kindle keyboard. I have an Oasis and the new PW, also a scribe and I still learned some things from this video. Oasis is the best for the reasons you stated, especially one hand(left)but my issue with the PW is not the power button at all. It’s more about the grip,I have had multiple pages skip ahead when swiping (drives me crazy). Have you experienced this ? Also if you’re in the US one of my favorite kindle features is to read books from the library! I dig that leather case and the patina but the fabric cover is awesome, had no idea it was water resistant, but I don’t read in water much or plan on getting the devices wet.
Thank you, glad to hear you enjoyed the video! As for the issue you described, I've never had it skip multiple pages ahead before, that would really frustrate me too! How long have you had your kindle? Maybe if you factory reset it and set it up as a new kindle that might help? Otherwise it could be a hardware defect with the button which Amazon support would more than likely replace for you. My grandma actually tried forcing the wrong cable into the USB-C port on her Paperwhite and ended up breaking the charging port 8 months after she got it, and they still replaced it for her completely free after I opened a support ticket for her. She got the brand new one 4 days after we shipped the broken one in, so that definitely might be worth a try as I've never had that page turning issue you mentioned. The issue I mentioned in the video where my Kindle Oasis would randomly just be dead when I went to use it actually just ended up being resolved by factory resetting it. I saw a few other people online were having similar issues, and the general consensus was factory reset fixed the issue, and that's definitely the case for me! I've been reading every night now for almost a month (finished all three books in the "Raven's Shadow" series, then of course had to jump right into the follow up series "Raven's Blade") and haven't had the issue at all! So incredibly happy it's fixed. As for the library, I don't think I've done that before! I am in the US, is that a feature on the kindle, or do you mean borrowing e-books from the public library? I know my wife uses the "Libby" app that lets you listen to audio books for free from your local library, she uses that pretty much daily. But I'm glad you like the cases I showed! I love the leather one, literally will never use another case other than that in the future, it's just so premium feeling and so nice to hold. That being said, I do love that the fabric one is water resistant. I also don't plan on ever getting these devices wet, but it's cool to know that for people who like to read books in the pool or at the beach that they wouldn't have to worry too much about the case or kindle getting wet. I think if I went on vacation or something to a beach or something someday I'd probably consider getting the fabric one just so I wouldn't risk ruining my leather case.
Newer kindles’ battery lives are shockingly good. I read a lot, my old kindle 8th Gen gets me nervous sometimes because it typically drains 5% per hour, doubles it when the Wi-Fi is on. My new kindle Paperwhite 5th Gen on the other hand only needs about 3% with Wi-Fi and light turned on, super impressed. Kindle Scribe is even better ❤❤ there was a time period that I absolutely WANT page-turn buttons, now I’m over it😂😂I guess my kindles have tamed me lol
I totally agree, they really are! Even my old PaperWhite from 2 versions ago had incredibly good battery life, it literally blew my mind when I pulled it out from my backpack having not used it in a few weeks and it still had 80% battery life left. Wow that's not bad at all! I'm kind of at the point where I don't even really look at the battery percentage and just charge it about once a week as needed. But that's cool to know the Kindle Scribe is even better, I was wondering what the battery life on that was like, but didn't want to purchase one since I don't need the writing features. But who knows maybe someday they'll come out with a Kindle Scribe that also has page-turn buttons, then we'll both probably want that one!
@@MTS4K lol you’re right. I don’t really use kindle scribe’s pen or notebook features either, but I really really wanna have a big screen reader, so I bought it anyway 😂 Originally I only intended to use it to read nonfictions, books with many charts and tables, but I found myself use it to read fictions too. It’s heavy but man am I enjoying use huge fonts (my eyesight is quite bad) !! 😆
Haha fair, definitely nice to have the big screen in that case! If I start needing to read any textbooks in the future I might have to check it out for that bigger screen, that’s a really good idea! Good to know it’s heavy though, I didn’t realize that! But haha well sounds like you got a good sized one for that then! My eyesight isn’t too bad yet, but if I keep staring at screens the way I have been (12+ hours a day) I’m definitely going to need a bigger screen/font too! Haha
Great question! They usually go on sale multiple times a year, but the best times to check would be any normal “big sale” days like Black Friday, Prime Day, Labor Day, etc. Because Kindle is owned by Amazon, they usually do very steep discounts during those sales which is really nice.

Same here, with regards to audiobooks. Hate them. I have been enjoying Oasis 2 since 2019. Love it so much, but the battery could be better.
