I had a grand pa who was in the ETO. He was a medic w/ capt.s rank , and fought from Normandy to near Berlin. He was in Operation Market Garden , ( a near disaster planned by Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery to end WW2 in Europe via Holland. ) He sed the Brit paratroopers were mauled @ Arnhem , and the USAs 101 , and 82 nd A/B Div.s faired slightly better , but never successfully x the Rhine. Not to mention their meager gains had to be defended from constant WAFFEN SS Conyers attacks. This was about mid 9/44.
He then went w/his unit to the Ardennes to stem a Nazi- German counter attack ( Battle of The Bulge )! He , and dude behind him , in Jeep after hitting a mine , were wounded , both drver , and dude behind were kia. He was picked up by an American patrol , and was lucky , because Colonel Joachim Piper s "Liebstandarte WAFFEN SS , 1st Panzer div. Was nearby . The same Colonel Joachim Piper culpable of massacring nearly 30 USA troops @ Malmsey! Battle of the Bulge happened at 12/16/44 .
He was reluctant to talk about a nasty period in his life! Took yrs. for him to spill his guts.

The famous tank duel at Cologne. Entire books have been written about that event. Fascinating.

I understood that the tank crewman seen jumping off the hit Sherman tank had his foot blown off and bled out within a few moments.

Poor guy climbing out of the turret at 07:45 is missing the lower part of left leg. It's even smoking.

He died shortly afterwards, bled to death according to records available on the internet. Sorry to say, I can't remember his name. He was much younger than he looks in the clip, mid 20's I think. There is an American newspaper clipping reporting his death which has a photo of him. His driver was killed, there is a photo somewhere on the internet, no wound visible but looks like the concussion caused brain damage. The shell from the Panther, which was concealed under a railway arch in the background (Köln Hauptbahnhof), entered the Sherman right above the driver's head, taking off the commander's lower leg, as you observed.
