How to Create a Satin Stitch + Difference between Stroke & Satin in Inkscape/Ink/Stitch

In today’s video, we’ll be embroidering a star and a circle twice. We embroider each shape as a satin and as a stroke. We’re also going to show you how you can make a satin stitch without using railroad tracks. We design in Inkscape & Ink/Stitch and embroider using our Brother SE100. Hope you enjoy!

For the satin stitch star, you can actually fix the breaking issue by manually moving the nodes and connecting the line tips like how it is on all of the other corners. Awesome video, you guys have helped me out a lot.

I’ve found this a lot in my work, actually. Neither simple solution works for me and for most of my projects I have to do a custom satin column. Even for circles and other shapes that seem simple, a satin column will give you many more underlay options.
What I have not done is actually stitch it out. Your results were way better in real life than the simulator would suggest. I’m going to have to run some experiments. Square corners are really bad in either automatic mode, but I might be able to save some serious time with more organic shapes. Thanks, peeps!!

For in the corners what you can do to have them look better you use the node select tool and select the rung closest to the corner and move the outside node a little toward the corner so that your rung is angled inkstitch puts all the rungs perpendicular to the rail and does not make adjustment for corners so we have to manually adjust them

Just went back through a couple of your videos trying to sort out an issue I’ve been having. No matter how wide I make a stroke, when I stitch it out, the stitch is very narrow. Different stroke widths result in the same width after stitching out.

Sorry to hear you’re having issues. We haven’t noticed this before and we’re not sure how to fix it. I hope you can fix your stroke width!

Thank you so much for the video! Have you come across designs where your satin lines (diff colors) need to cross paths? I cannot for the life of my figure out how to make thin satin lines cross each other without making the stitch out way too thick! The subtract tool doesn’t seem to work with a satin line crossing a satin line. Unless I’m doing it wrong.

I believe you would need to make the necessary edits while the satin line is a stroke (before converting the line to a satin). At this point you can delete the section at the crossover, which should give you a flatter result in the end. Thanks for watching!

You would need to make adjustments to your stroke, go to Fill and Stroke, Select Stroke Style and change the width.

Also a big difference between zig zag and satin is also that with the satin you can apply undersewing and you cannot do that with a zig zag

I removed the fill, but when I visualize, it still fills the inside of the shape instead of just filling the border. Is there a way to fix this?

We can’t be sure why this is happening, the only idea we have is to make sure you’re pressing the X on the left of the color palette instead of white. This is possible if you’re using a white background and the white fill blends in with the background. I hope this helps and you’re able to figure this out!
