What I love about Vivian's playing that i think is missing in a lot of today's solos is phrasing. Vivian is a master of constructing memorable parts and solos that will really catch your ears and stick in your head... the solo from Dio's The last in line has always been one of my all time favorites... I saw him live with whitesnake in the late 80's and was such a great show!!!

Please stop! They are the best at getting drunk and coked before going on stage. I saw them 3 times back in the day. Pyromania in Hollywood Florida was their best showing. They came out with stage fright but pulled it together and rocked out. Van Halen, Ozzy, and Motley Crue blew them up more than a few times... Pour some sugar on that!!!

Loved this! I am so grateful to Vivian for his role in Def Leppard. We the fans are so lucky that Leppard found/chose him, and that they all get along so well, for all of these years. Finding someone to fill that spot couldn't have been easy, Viv had to learn something new and kind of put his style/pride to the side to fit what was needed from him. I feel like he is the reason I, at 29 years old, have gotten to see my favorite band play live 5 times, all within the last ten years, so long after they started. And I am so grateful for every time I get to see them live, they sound incredible and put on such an amazing show to this day. Can't wait for the stadium tour, whenever it happens! Long live rock n roll, and long live Def Leppard!! 🤘

Takes me back to 1992 when a new chap turned up on stage as the new guitar player in Def Leppard. We had no idea who he was but he came across as such a friendly and happy person. He still got that twinkle in his eye after so many years. Great guy!
As posted Viv was jammed from day one. The loss of the musical, lyrical and on stage persona rock star Steven Maynard "The Riffmaster" Clark was, remains incalculable. When he was using Charvels in the 90's you'd hear the Floyd sound but since he's reverted back to LP's Collen obviously has had to take some [he has taken imo too much] guitar parts due to the effects, which if you watch what is arguably Leppard's greatest concert at their peak in 1988, the 'In The Round, In Your Face Tour, Denver Colorado, 1988', which is on TH-cam, you can clearly see Steve's rig, which by then was a magically put together guitar rig, his epic creme triple pick up LP Custom with Kahler, 2 black beauties, TBird + Kahler, 18 string Razor, one white with Kahler, and he has a triple pick up TB bright red. This concert is not only mind blowing - you clearly get to see the genius play up close. His amazingly deft use of his Kahler, and his Boss delay pedals. The sounds Steve pulled from these Gibsons was imo stunning. You just cannot replicate that today for obvious reasons. Vivian has a seriously kick arse vibrato. Like the one and only 'SpaceAce', who briefly flirted with a Floyd post KISS in 'Frehleys Comet', Ace said in interviews the tremolo made him into a sloppy player as he relied too much on the Floyd and his vibrato suffered. Vivian with no Floyd is imo the same. His 20+ years now of playing with a fixed bridge has only added to his vibrato. He is a delight to watch and like Ace and EVH [different category obviously] Viv wrings every bit he can out of his notes and also if you watch him closely you'll see he bleeds Steve's guitar parts. Personally, I reckon Steve would've been rapt Viv ended up replacing him. The fit, if still criminally underused - s still right in 2021.

Saw Leppard on the stadium tour & saw them back in on pyro mania & hysteria (yes I know he wasn’t on them) but I did see him with dio a few times and white snake and then on adrenalized! And he is a phenomenal player. I really do have so so so much respect for this man, seems like a real down to earth guy and there will always be haters and trolls who will say “he isn’t Steve Clark” well yeah no shit but he is Vivian Fucking Campbell! Vivian was a huge influence on me when I first started playing guitar back in 1984. Rainbow in the dark, holy diver and last in line were some of the first songs I learned how to play. The solos, well that took a while longer. A lot longer. lol!

Interesting point about the calluses. I've gone through cancer treatment myself and my calluses are not what the used to be, even with everyday practice a couple of hours.

Last In Line played a small rock festival here in Scotland and my mate said that they had been a highlight . I looked online and saw Vivian play and was stunned and annoyed at myself for not picking up on him before . He has a great style with riffs and leads which he makes look easy . Appears to be a great guy too in the interviews I’ve watched . 👍

I remember seeing Vivian at the Dallas guitar show post Dio. He was by himself, walking the stalls. He blended in with crowd. I think I was the only one stalking him. :) I presume that was the yr he met Buddy Blaze.
Fun video! A little clarification on the Rand guitars. There are 4 different Vivian Rands, and I think Vivian had a hard time recollecting this info during the interview: 1. "Still of the Night Rand" featured in the video and now with a collector. 2. "Is This Love" Rand which is also with the same collector. This one had one-humbucker. 3. "Young Guitar Magazine" Rand which is the one you asked Vivian about and actually different than the one in the "Still of the Night" video. This one is supposedly at a Hard Rock Cafe in Costa Rica but not confirmed. 4. Green Rand. This is the one Vivian mentions he has in storage. Sincerely, Crazy Rand guitar guy. I have videos on these guitars and plan on updating them soon.

I love Vivian. He was always going to be smashed by the wankers out there when the genius in Steve passed. With respect to classical guitars the differences between the two are night and day. Steve was taught to play classical guitar and this would come into his guitar playing in latter years. Given Steve WAS the primary song writer of Leppard, and when 'Mutt' came along it was Mutt who mined the gold with his brilliance. But having that classical training gave Steve a distinctly special, or as Collen puts in "quirky, Steve was into quirky sounds, he could take something that was quirky and make it commercial". Vivian is a beast of a guitar player, and one of the nicest blokes I have ever seen i interviews. He still is honest and has no issue whatsoever in saying what is fact "90% of what we play Steve left us"...and "I still cannot play GoW". It for me and I suspect many others is extremely annoying that Phil has taken over so many of Steve's guitar parts. For example the intro and ride out solo-riffing to 'Photograph'. I have read Viv's somewhat pissed off, do not know if this is true, but if it is I agree with Viv 100% To see Vivian Campbell let loose, on his own steam is a delight, he is imo one of the great guitarists from the 80's. Dio and he both needed each other, and they created magic. Now that it seems he's beaten cancer I hope we get to see him again. Leppard are a unique hard rock band in terms of they and only a handful of other bands still use their own live vocals. In other words you get 100%% rock n roll. No lip lyncing, no Crue like kabuki. Just raw music.

I saw them on their first U.S. tour at the Sunrise Musical Amphitheater in 1981. I was only 12 years old. It was my first concert besides some local keg party bands... They opened for Ozzy and Randy Rhoads. No fucking contest. Rhoads torched the place!!!
@@thelolguy007 Lets just put it this way. I got my first guitar because of seeing Randy live that day. So inspiring and so far ahead of his time. Also I had the ticket to the Diary of a Madman tour. He died in that little plane 2 stops before getting to me. When I found out I lit a skunk bud joint and set the ticket on fire. It only burned half and I kept the other half for many years. I locked myself in my room for a week straight. My mom threatened to have me taken off to rehab. At skool I wrote my first parents note for an absence so they always had my handwriting to compare future notes. I gave Asian flu as the reason for missing 4 days. My mom vouched for me so I wouldn't get expelled. Played the talent show 2wice in my band Ravage. Those were wild days. We lived adult lives as teenagers. So wild, So Free. Things will never be that good again......

This concert is not only mind blowing - you clearly get to see the genius play up close. His amazingly deft use of his Kahler, and his Boss delay pedals. The sounds Steve pulled from these Gibsons was imo stunning.
You just cannot replicate that today for obvious reasons. Vivian has a seriously kick arse vibrato. Like the one and only 'SpaceAce', who briefly flirted with a Floyd post KISS in 'Frehleys Comet', Ace said in interviews the tremolo made him into a sloppy player as he relied too much on the Floyd and his vibrato suffered. Vivian with no Floyd is imo the same. His 20+ years now of playing with a fixed bridge has only added to his vibrato. He is a delight to watch and like Ace and EVH [different category obviously] Viv wrings every bit he can out of his notes and also if you watch him closely you'll see he bleeds Steve's guitar parts. Personally, I reckon Steve would've been rapt Viv ended up replacing him. The fit, if still criminally underused - s still right in 2021.

Saw Leppard on the stadium tour & saw them back in on pyro mania & hysteria (yes I know he wasn’t on them) but I did see him with dio a few times and white snake and then on adrenalized! And he is a phenomenal player. I really do have so so so much respect for this man, seems like a real down to earth guy and there will always be haters and trolls who will say “he isn’t Steve Clark” well yeah no shit but he is Vivian Fucking Campbell! Hope they can do another one of these some day.

Vivian was a huge influence on me when I first started playing guitar back in 1984. Rainbow in the dark, holy diver and last in line were some of the first songs I learned how to play. The solos, well that took a while longer. A lot longer. lol!

Last In Line played a small rock festival here in Scotland and my mate said that they had been a highlight . I looked online and saw Vivian play and was stunned and annoyed at myself for not picking up on him before . He has a great style with riffs and leads which he makes look easy . Appears to be a great guy too in the interviews I’ve watched . 👍

I remember seeing Vivian at the Dallas guitar show post Dio. He was by himself, walking the stalls. He blended in with crowd. I think I was the only one stalking him. :) I presume that was the yr he met Buddy Blaze.
It’s a Digitech GSP-21 multi FX which is mentioned by Viv in Guitarist magazine. The GSP-21 was also available in floor format as the Digitech RP-1.

Fun video! A little clarification on the Rand guitars. There are 4 different Vivian Rands, and I think Vivian had a hard time recollecting this info during the interview:
1. "Still of the Night Rand" featured in the video and now with a collector.
2. "Is This Love" Rand which is also with the same collector. This one had one-humbucker.
3. "Young Guitar Magazine" Rand which is the one you asked Vivian about and actually different than the one in the "Still of the Night" video. This one is supposedly at a Hard Rock Cafe in Costa Rica but not confirmed.
4. Green Rand. This is the one Vivian mentions he has in storage.

I love Vivian. He was always going to be smashed by the wankers out there when the genius in Steve passed. With respect to classical guitars the differences between the two are night and day. Steve was taught to play classical guitar and this would come into his guitar playing in latter years. Given Steve WAS the primary song writer of Leppard, and when 'Mutt' came along it was Mutt who mined the gold with his brilliance. But having that classical training gave Steve a distinctly special, or as Collen puts in "quirky, Steve was into quirky sounds, he could take something that was quirky and make it commercial". Vivian is a beast of a guitar player, and one of the nicest blokes I have ever seen i interviews. He still is honest and has no issue whatsoever in saying what is fact "90% of what we play Steve left us"...and "I still cannot play GoW". It for me and I suspect many others is extremely annoying that Phil has taken over so many of Steve's guitar parts. For example the intro and ride out solo-riffing to 'Photograph'. I have read Viv's somewhat pissed off, do not know if this is true, but if it is I agree with Viv 100%
To see Vivian Campbell let loose, on his own steam is a delight, he is imo one of the great guitarists from the 80's. Dio and he both needed each other, and they created magic.
Now that it seems he's beaten cancer I hope we get to see him again. Leppard are a unique hard rock band in terms of they and only a handful of other bands still use their own live vocals. In other words you get 100%% rock n roll. No lip lyncing, no Crue like kabuki. Just raw music.

I grew up on Dio stuff, when Dio came out in 1983 that album blew me away guitar wise. Viv's playing was insane. Kudos to Jason's editing though, didn't keep us with the same view.

@@thelolguy007 Lets just put it this way. I got my first guitar because of seeing Randy live that day. So inspiring and so far ahead of his time. Also I had the ticket to the Diary of a Madman tour. He died in that little plane 2 stops before getting to me. When I found out I lit a skunk bud joint and set the ticket on fire. It only burned half and I kept the other half for many years. I locked myself in my room for a week straight. My mom threatened to have me taken off to rehab. At skool I wrote my first parents note for an absence so they always had my handwriting to compare future notes. I gave Asian flu as the reason for missing 4 days. My mom vouched for me so I wouldn't get expelled. Played the talent show 2wice in my band Ravage. Those were wild days. We lived adult lives as teenagers. So wild, So Free. Things will never be that good again......
