Met them in Nashville back in 87'. Security tried to throw me out. Phil saw it and grabbed me and pulled me past security, gave me an autograph and introduced me to the rest of the guys. Hes a great dude, and I'll never forget that.
I met him in a mall in the late 80's. He was so nice - he carried on quite a conversation with me - he didn't rush away. I saw them in concert later that night. None of my friends believed that I met him.
Yes, Miss *Steve Steamin' Clark* to this day, still. He was the writing/composing master for all their material. Sadly, is why I had to part ways after Hysteria. Love the boys always, however.
This is such a great interview. I really never liked much of Def Leppard after Pyromania, but doggone it...Phil Collen is such an underrated guitarist and such a cool person. I still prefer the older Def Leppard stuff, but I respect the craft of their other material so much more after seeing this and understanding how much work went into the arrangements. This is a really pleasant surprise...Nikki really does a nice job making this a cool conversation with nothing contrived. Gotta give respect here.
Nikki, You're an amazing Interviewer/Listener. You actually listen to your guests, You actually let your guests talk. Most interviewers ask corny questions, yet you ask interesting questions and get a lot out of your guests! Keep these episodes coming! Keep Rocking!
The reason being is he is a musician himself and knows the pain of interviewers who either don't know what they're doing or don't care because they're jealous and only doing the interview for views/listens.
Great interview. When I see the early videos of Def Leppard I am always amazed at the extrordinary talent of these guys when they were so young. -Writing ability, playing ability, organizing ability, harmony. Listening to some of the interviews I'm realizing Mutt about killed these guys to get them to that point. Not to say that they were not extremely talented to begin with, but rather, he took them to an extraordinary level through grueling hard work.
Yes, it's almost as if everyone has forgotten the anchor to the band's writing creativity, *Steve Clark. The strawberry blonde guitarist will forever live on & always be missed.* Love & Appreciate you Steve.
Phil Collen is one of the most honest and unashamed guitarists to grace the lighted stage. He'll be the first to admit that he's clueless when it comes to tuning his guitars by ear; that he'd be lost without his guitar tech. He reveals the in-complexity surrounding guitar riffs; it's much more simpler than most of it looks kids. After all it's only rock 'n' roll...so don't be intimidated, pick up a guitar and try it.
It’s certainly not embarrassing to be in an extremely successful band that’s still going and sounds great even today. Who gives a fuck how Phil tunes. Until you make it big have a seat.
I love seeing my favorite rockstars getting along and showing respect. Back in the day they all talked so much shit about each other. I think I like clean and sober, humbled musicians. Love this.
Pyromania , was the first cassette tape I bought, I think I was 10 or 12 ,we had an old trampoline we would crank it up an jump around for hours, such great times
Total respect here... is anyone else getting a Mr. Rogers vibe from Mr. Sixx’ interview style? Very impressed... didn’t expect this. A great interviewing style. Gonna have to watch more of these.
The vibe of these interviews is spot on. I'm addicted to them already and thrilled to see more. It's great to see the enthused musician/fan side of Nikki. I can relate!
In the world of metal Nikki is by far one the smartest and most articulate dudes in the business. A great representative and perfect person to conduct these discussions. So awesome that a forum like this even exists.
Yes! So tired of hearing "I know why you like him". Haha Yes, he's pretty, but there are a lot of pretty faces out there with huge, nasty egos and nothing between their ears. I'm so proud of 12 year old me for falling in love with him way back when.
it's hard to imagine thinking Nikki was so crazy when he was younger ( and not in good way ) yet now he is so pleasant and well mannered. On top of that, he is a great interviewer and a gifted songwriter. IMO
I am elated, elated that such a great guitarist like Phil had trouble with all that stretching Andy does and was so humble about it. I've been trying to learn some Police songs and have been feeling tortured by the way Andy plays and thought maybe I just suck... but now! HA! Phil Collen struggles with that shit too!... so relieved. Thanks Phil for being a straight shooter. You just got a struggling guitarist to pick up his guitar today.
Yep, couldn't agree more. I've spent 34 years struggling to play that song. Only now do I find the pros do as well. It;s at this point th-cam.com/video/PSqrAbYCfr8/w-d-xo.html
Yeah, no disrespect to Phil, but I wish metal players would get over the fucking delay bullshit. At least he didn't overdub 15 guitars onto the interview.
Nikki if you happen to read this...So great to see you clear headed, talking and getting off on music with Phil...Hit my Soberversary May 15th,2016...But i hope you know there are many of us who will always be rooting for you to stay on the higher path and remain here with us on earth..Peace brother...Say hello to Varner if you see him....Denny
Awesome interview with an awesome guitarist. Highlights.... ...hearing Phil Collen talk about air-drumming Phil Collins drums from "In The Air Tonight" ...seeing Collen riffing his favorite riffs from his early days playing (shocked how fast he can still play) ...watching Phil play the guitar hook from "All The Young Dudes" ...seeing Collen (quite literally) s t r a i n i n g to stretch his fingers around the neck to play Sting's chords from "Every Breath You Take" ...hearing Collen talk about how hard it is to play and sing Love Bites Def Leppard still makes me smile every time I hear one of their songs. 1st concert I saw was May 1983 in Dallas, Texas. Last concert I saw was Concord, CA Sep 2012. It is f'ing PURE JOY to watch this band play, and especially to watch Collen play guitar. Thank you to these men for bringing so many people so much joy by simply sharing their music and themselves with the word.
I think what makes Nikki so outstanding at this is the fact that at his roots.....he's a FAN. He loves music, and just eats, sleeps, lives and breathes music. So seeing him talk music with other extremely talented folks is just aces. I miss Sixx Sense!!!
Always loved Phil's polished playing and sound......so intoxicating! These lil' sit down are fabulous Nikki! Brilliant idea! Hope you come forth with some more slammin' music! I know your best is still to come! Cheers!
What a fantastic interview for the love of god. This is the stuff that people born in the 60s and 70s have been waiting for such a long time. TH-cam is the greatest thing ever.
Sixx, this is a quality and in-depth interview. This is like an interview you hear on a classical radio station like WRR in Dallas where people are really into the music and there's not alot of the BS. Thumbs up!
Hey Nikki, I just discovered yer channel about a week ago. I've been a guitar repairman since 1987. Because of my interests I constantly check out stuff on TH-cam & other social media because I love learning what guys like you & those who are into my craft have to share. Anyways... You interviewing peeps who make their living from music, some from when I was a kid... Love it, brother! Keep doing this, man.
You can easily see the rock ‘n’ roll loving kid is still alive and well in Nikki. He’s gotta be one of the most down-to-earth rich and famous people out there and this series is endlessly entertaining because of it.
My soul smiled, seeing Phil sit & talk with Nikki. God, I can even imagine a conversation with Steve, what a crime that he's been gone for so long; that is to say, gone at all. I'll never stop missing Steve.
Wanna also say... I'm not a huge Crue fan, but Nikki Sixx has always been such a real person, and I've always noticed and appreciated that about him. Much love for Nikki & all the guys from Motley Crue, always being real.
What a great chat by two talented and insightful guys who have paid their dues in the Rock genre, and get on so well together. .that's what it's all about. Love it!
Whoo! Love it. Sounds just like it. Wow. Phil Collen stuff. I spent hours on this stuff in high school. This is different. Kind of unreal, this stuff. Got to say that. Very cool.
These episodes are absolutely amazing ! What a time we live in! Never would have thought 30 yrs ago we'd be having an intimate discussion with these greats in 2017!
This is so awesome. I was on a Leppard binge and now here. Not a huge Crue fan except when i was 12 back in the 80s. It still holds up musically. Nikki is looking good and love this whole interview. Now i'll have to watch them all. Especially Jeff Beck. Nice to hear them talk about him. He really keeps progressing.
What a great conversation. These guys are so humble and genuine. Phil Collen is such an effective player, really fascinating hearing about his influences.
Phil is the coolest. And this was very enlightening, Nikki, thanks. I never understood why DL Songs sound so different live then on the album. Ex. Animal. Totally different harmonies. According to this they must have rearranged the music in order that it would be possible to play all the various parts and sing at the same time while live where as recorded they were able to do it piecemeal and combine. Bottom line: Th ese guys are musical geniuses and their music animates them. Gives a new appreciation.
Recently met Phil during the residency in Vegas (I interrupted him in starbucks) was such a nice guy. I just said how great the show was, and i was looking forward to seeing ot a second time. I didnt want to impose for a autograph or photo, but he was very unassuming and nice to take the Tim to talk to me. X
HYSTERIA has my favorite solo ever probably and love the strumming and every thing at the end it actually puts me into a zone kind of like a temporary high ,the hysteria album has some of my all time favorite guitar playing super cool to hear Phil loves it to thats so awesome
Another really unexpectedly fantastic interview. Nikki, you are really talented at this. It would be interesting to see some oddball pairings on here (Andy Summers, Richard Thompson, Rick Nielson) or maybe a guy studio whiz like Pete Thorn
rob oliver Given Nikki’s hellraising background with Crüe, he’s such an unexpectedly calm, thoughtful, and kind personality. Phil’s always a super nice guy in every interview too. This is brilliant. I hope both guys know how highly they’re thought of.
I've never really seen an interview with Nikki. I'm surprised at how down to earth he seems. I'm a huge Phil Collen and Def Leppard fan. Awesome interview!
Thanks for sharing literally some of the greatest guitarist of all time. I would love to have your Rolodex of contacts, so to speak. Thanks for bringing them on your show and showcasing their intellect, memories, and talent.
Nikki is a great interviewer. He knows how to segway to the next topic really well, which makes for a very natural and unawkward conversation. Really cool!
Awesome, thanks guys...you know how to make it happen. Bless you all, Rock on, thank you so much for your fantastic music. Stay Safe, Bee Well. Regards, from N. Tx. Doug
Nikki, this is a friggin awesome channel brother! Love all the facets you touch upon with each artist; so well prepared (always)! Great chat with Phil too; way to dig in!🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
2 guys I’ve always loved, and both of their bands stood above the “hair metal” goofiness, despite occasionally indulging in it at the time. Nikki was always my fave Crue member, and Phil Collen was the ingredient that took Leppard to the stratosphere.
Met them in Nashville back in 87'. Security tried to throw me out. Phil saw it and grabbed me and pulled me past security, gave me an autograph and introduced me to the rest of the guys. Hes a great dude, and I'll never forget that.
I totally agree. I know him and he's a great guy.
Wow, what a great thing for him to do. I'm even more happy that I'm a fan of his.... cheers.
thats awesome. thats also someone who truly loves his fans and ego free.
I met him in a mall in the late 80's. He was so nice - he carried on quite a conversation with me - he didn't rush away. I saw them in concert later that night. None of my friends believed that I met him.
AWESOME
Phil is just a genuinely nice person. Such a great, humble guy.
Everyone from Def Leppard is. Joe Elliott is often blunt, but never rude.
Je suis d'accord😊J'taime Phil☺
Was just going to say the same
This was AMAZING... Nikki's right, when he plays, it sounds like Def Leppard... Phil's joy and enthusiasm just shines through when he plays!
is that Nikki from Moley Crue
phil is such a genuine beautiful soul- I wish steve clark were still here to do a session with six-rip
Great to hear someone mention Steve ,a great guitar player never forgotten
kita17n Clarke was great, oh the terror twins
Yes, Miss *Steve Steamin' Clark* to this day, still. He was the writing/composing master for all their material. Sadly, is why I had to part ways after Hysteria. Love the boys always, however.
The whole band just loves what they do,it's obvious Everytime one of them is interviewed.
2 friends just chilling talking music n guitars. Love it.
Hearing Phil Collen say the name "Phil Collins" in a sentence is something.
When I was a kid I always thought Phil Collins was the guitarist of Def Leppard lol
Aren't they the same person?
Haha yes. I was expecting some irony from him about it.
Ted C LOL, I was just thinking the same thing when I heard it.
Like a funny Austin Powers moment “Allow myself to introduce, eh, myself.”
I've always thought Phil was such an underrated guitar player. Same goes for Def Leppard too. Very deep, complex yet rhythmic music.
I can agree 100% with you.... Phil is so underrated... Phil and Steve Clark are my biggest influences!
I agree. Def Leppard's guitar work is underrated.
BD A phil was back to steve then became lead when steve died.
Bradley Vest steve clark is the best guitar player imo
greenghost3737 Steve and Phil will always be my biggest influences!
His playing is insanity. Love him, and I’ve always respected him as an artist and person.
Well done Nikki. Great show and Phil Collen is all class. All the best from Sydney Australia.Love your show.
This is such a great interview. I really never liked much of Def Leppard after Pyromania, but doggone it...Phil Collen is such an underrated guitarist and such a cool person. Fernando Magana He's a good man and a better bassist now that he's sober. God bless him
I agree all the way
Well said Fernando! A lot of hosts could learn a thing or two from Nikki!
Totally, Nikki does a great Job!
The reason being is he is a musician himself and knows the pain of interviewers who either don't know what they're doing or don't care because they're jealous and only doing the interview for views/listens.

Phil & Nikki just rule. Both come across as very friendly, intelligent and articulate people. I totally love these What’s Your Favorite Riff videos.
Hysteria has always been my favorite song, 1st Def Leppard song as well!
Love to see two of my favs from when i was a kid. Phil is the real deal.
Phil Collen is amazing. He is why I play guitar. Actually watching Steve Clark and Phil together.
watching the terror twins playing is everything.

Sixx is a great interviewer! Loving these videos. Great content and insight!
Definitely an underrated unappreciated player.
No doubt about it. He’s a super guy

If you are Phil Collen and you have the humble to recognize those "The Police" tricky notes...Damn!!! you are really an artist
I cheat when I play that police song , I tune the E string to drop D , no stretching ...lol
Phil is really a cool down to earth guitar player, still loves what he does!
I love seeing my favorite rockstars getting along and showing respect. Back in the day they all talked so much shit about each other. I think I like clean and sober, humbled musicians. Love this.

Todd Lavigne ageing and being humbled will do that.
Loved this, I’m a fan of Phil. Been going back to the 80’s guitarists like Steve Stevens and Phil Colen on TH-cam lately.
JamCave Studio steve clark from leppard is better than viv
greenghost3737 Yeah, I don’t rate guitarist or rank them one better than the other. I don’t do that with any guitarist.
JamCa
JamCave Studio I saw Steve Stevens live before I knew his name. It was a who the hell is this guy moment. Amazing.
John Fisher well said Johnny

Yeah, no disrespect to Phil, but I wish metal players would get over the fucking delay bullshit. At least he didn't overdub 15 guitars onto the interview.
It's so interesting to hear the greats in the business talking about how they fanboy on other greats in the business.
God I love Phil’s vibrato, so wide and expressive!
I think Phil is a professional. He admits he doesn't know everything, but what he does know he does well.
This Favourite Riff series is turning out really good
Please keep making these, my favorite thing I've seen lately!
Phil looks better now than he did 25 years ago. Great guitarist.

Awesome interview with Phil well done Nikki and Jeff Beck is one of if not the greatest.
I love that Nikki is doing this!!! Go nikki!

Phil is SO underrated. Expert in every aspect of the guitar
