I remember years back, me and my friend were playing on a super unpopular modpack server that had mystcraft. We ended up getting trapped in a dimension that was essentially a medium sky island and nothing else. We were there for days, literally, just trying to find a way out and we ended up finding a single lava block, and then used a glitch with thermal dynamics tanks to dupe the lava block, then we made a nether portal which led back to the ovaworld.

I remember my first time trying Mystcraft it was to make a dimension to try the Blood Magic invasion to get a Tier 6 altar and orb. Built and started the ritual and one of the Meteors landed in the middle of the structure when I was about 3/4s of the way through and cost me a huge amount of LP.
Unless something has changed since last time I used Mystcraft, you can make linking books that go to _any_ dimension, not just the overworld, and create a teleporting network even just within the overworld with multiple linking books.
Linking Books will teleport you to wherever you establish the link to (i.e. where you're standing when you activate it), and only travels through dimensions unless you have Intra-linking on it. So yeah, pretty much.
I've always thought that the diseased books made by Ghen with imperfect materials have a lot in common with the myst books we make in minecraft. im legit curious what this translates into English as. i use the same level of verbal shorthand. im actually planning to implement this as part of a four theme map because of the stable hotswap portals on a no grief server, but if its possible to nerf the damage like i did with creepers getting a one block radius {if i can still have them capable of damage sometimes, i want to go .5} because the trap use can be a good arena specific thing wound be AWESOME
sad to think of Myst as an "old video game." I guess it is, but then, I'm an old video game player so it doesn't seem so long ago. Always cracks me up when younger gamers talk about the 90's like ancient history!
I grew up in the 90s, so it feels old like anything from your childhood feels old - but I'm aware for a lot of Gen Z, this is something from before they were born, which is a different relationship to media entirely.
I realized the moment I fell into the fissure that the book would not be destroyed as I planned. It continued falling into that starry expanse of which I had only a fleeting glimpse. I tried to speculate where it might have landed. I must admit, however, that such conjecture is futile. Still, questions about whose hands might one day hold my Myst book are unsettling to me. I know my apprehensions might never be allayed, and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written. -Atrus, Myst 1993

Myst itself actually hasn't held up super well over the years, but its sequel - Riven - is actually still well worth checking out today! Really fantastic atmosphere and worldbuilding, and the visuals remain really nice. You can grab an updated version patched to work well on modern computers on Good Old Games. (In some ways it's actually *better* than it was back at release, because you don't have to deal with swapping out five different floppy disks when you move between areas.)
@@Nerdule Seconding this. Riven is absolutely worth going back to play. If nothing else, it's worth it to soak in the excellent world-building and creative visuals.
Great video! It is amazing to see the mods people make for mc and how they attempt to recreate old games in it. I loved myst and its many sequels back in the day, so I may have to try out this mod.
By the way, my personal favorite way to use Mystcraft: Build a portal to another dimension. Create two unlinked link books, and use one inside of my "book/portal room," where I have a lectern/book stand, and later a portal made of crystal blocks. Bring both books and another lectern/book stand with me through to the new dimension (the Nether, The End, Twilight Forest, etc.), where I will promptly find a decent spot for another book room. Place the lectern/stand and put the book back to the overworld into it. I then use the other link book from within said book room, to create an easier way back into the dimension, and bring this book back with me to the overworld. This lets me create a quick, simple way back and forth from the Nether (for example) without having to stand around in a portal for several seconds letting the transition sequence make me dizzy. I can also tear down the portal on both sides, so I won't have to deal with all the noise it makes. This technique is also great for getting to The End much easier, for when the closest stronghold ends up still being miles away.

Out of curiosity, what specs would a multiplayer server need to have if it had both Mystcraft and Aether mods? With immersive portals, dimensional dungeons, Shadowlands, and the moon mod as well? How stable would the game be? I was thinking that it would be cool to start with a basic skyblock overworld, trapped on an island. You need to write books to link to worlds to gather the resources neccessary to make a portal to the nether and/or the aether but first you have to build the capacity to farm such materials in Skyblock. From there you can start accessing the mods of other worlds. You'd probably start with the nether, then with glowstone you'd get to the Aether, and eventually the rest. Once you gain access to good mining locations you will have earned the right to fight through dungeons to claim their loot. Your overworld will only be a thing of beauty if you can gather the resources needed to make it a thing of beauty - or you can treat the overworld as a way station between realms. After a while, mining infinite cobblestone and building just out of rock gets tedious and you can't make more dirt without getting access to the nether, mining gravel to craft it. Having a set of goals that would ultimately lead to your resource shortage ending could be a nice twist on the skyblock experience - especially for a server. It also got boring after a while having to do things like make a people farm to spawn an iron golem to get the obsidian needed to get to the end to get the gravel needed to craft more dirt. Having an alternative route would be nice. Adding in 4k texture packs, MInecraft Shaders, and VR options for good measure would be nice as well. But, again, what kind of server would it take?
