Julia "Butterfly" Hill on NBC Dateline, 2-14-99, including the infamous instance of PL President, John Campbell, calling tree-sitters "terrorists" on national television. John Campbell passed away on October 19th, 2008, R.I.P. The tree Julia was sitting in, "Luna," was permanently protected under John Campbell's presidency; quite a turn-around from negotiating with "terrorists," eh?
Actually, Luna was attacked, about one year after the tree was saved, with one cut that went all the way across and about 2/3 of the way through. The cut was discovered by Shunka Wakan, before the next big storm came, and steel braces were attached to the tree to keep it standing. It was an amazing collaboration between Pacific Lumber Co. and environmental groups, and Luna survived the winter storms. Luna is still standing, to this day, and is healing up well from the attack.

I completely disagree. Just because someone has moved on doesn't mean that they're "stuck up." Julia already spent 2 years and 8 days in the Luna tree-sit, then spent quite a bit of time in the Los Angeles community garden tree-sit, so I'd say she's paid her dues as far as tree-sitting goes. Julia has done a lot of great things for a lot of different groups and causes, and she's one of the most down-to-Earth people I know. You have the right to your opinion, I just have to disagree 100%

A big "yay!" is definitely appropriate here! I'm glad I could update you on this, because it is such a great and inspiring story of how people can stand up to the big corporations and win:) Many tears have been shed for the fallen ones, so that's been taken care of, as well. PL is actually history now, as Maxxam finally filed bankruptcy on PL and the courts gave ownership to the Mendocino Redwood Company, who have promised to not cut old growth as their company policy! We won!

@HarpEeveeWove They didn't actually cut the tree down, yet it did get cut into. Braces were made to keep the tree standing, and cables were also attached higher up on the tree to stabilize it. You can find photos online by doing a websearch.
