    Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey TH-cam channel!
    My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what I thought it promises.
    Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.
    After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my TH-cam channel called "Martial Arts Journey".
    Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

      Yup. I think something like this could be greatly beneficial for the martial arts communities as a whole, not for that they're gonna solve self defence, but to show that working together from different backgrounds (a bit like mma..?) is the key to start improving this aspect of martial arts, which seems to be a very underdeveloped aspect of them.

    2:43 I'm a Judoka, but also a medical worker. I've often offered to teach my fellow medical pros some moves against dangerous patients, but they've always declined. I've seen a number of violent patients attack hospital staff and have had to act to protect them; but my experience is they never think it will happen to them and always decline self-defense training.

    • @famfloro
      @famfloro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That would be the expected response. People are lazy and optimistic. I'm an office worker. Many companies require their employees to take ergonomic training because bad office posture causes back and neck problems that eventually cost money to the companies.
      It is for their own benefit, but lots of people wouldn't invest the time if not required by the company.
      Some other companies reduce your medical insurance if you take some voluntary measures to protect your health. If your company had this program, I would say that a qualified self defense program based on restraint and holds (and not hitting) would be ideal for medical workers.
      Judo is of course, the prime candidate. But you don't always want to throw the patients to the floor. As ineffective as Aikido can be in a full fight scenario, when you only need to show your dominance over a misbehaving person (holding a person by the wrist, moving a patient into a room) it works quite well. Timing the hand movements of untrained people to learn to hold the wrists is what police do best. It is not impossible.

    • @Quach7
      @Quach7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Medical workers are in "The Mirror Universe." Fighting is antithetical to their being. They are there to take people out of the hospital, not put people into the hospital.

      @@famfloro It's not just that from what I've seen. Many people, perhaps most people, don't want to do any sort of self defense training (either in fighting or just avoidance) because training self defense means acknowledging psychologically that they could be attacked, and this scares them, so they live in denial instead.

    • @baldieman64
      @baldieman64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Two obvious issues are that martial artists generally make terrible self defence instructors, and that any sort of "training" causes courts to make ridiculous assumptions about what you should have been able to do to control the bad guy.
      If you're in a public facing roll, it's better to stay quiet about any skills you have and focus on as much realism as possible.

    I went to an open door training day at a hapkido school once not expecting much, and tbh most of it was just the kind of dry cooperative drills I'd been used to from aikido, but they had rows of bus seats set up in the corner of the room, so I asked what that was about and the instructor told me that was how they trained for being attacked on public transport. I hadn't had much MA experience at the time so the idea of training like that, from a seated position in a confined space really blew my mind.

      I used to train historical fencing with a group of guys who were also doing fencing shows in theaters. And apparently a thing that used to happen was that in a big fight scene, some dudes "died" and they were lying on the floor, so were their swords. So it was kinda important to learn how to move around, do your thing and not step on them or their swords. To train that, our master threw bunch of swords on the ground, showed us where they are and then had us walk through them blindfolded. This seems dumb and irrelevant to self-defense in any way. Except, I then sparred with a friend outdoor, for shit and giggles (I did some other martial arts as well) and I realised I remember where all the things are :D. He started aggresively pushing me and I was like: "yep, I do know there is a sign post 90 cm behind me brother" and dodged his last attack diagonally so he ran into the post instead of me. These are little things that they won't teach you in your martial arts school, but give you small edge in the real world.

    Great video, as always! I’ve followed Jeff for a while, he’s truly an awesome guy and I hope I get to train with him one day. Also, the training environments that Jeff built in the Western Combatives gym reminds me of what Ryan Hoover from Fit to Fight did in his HQ location, and I think if you’d dive in to it you’d see a lot of similarities to what Jeff is doing (and maybe we’ll get a Ryan Hoover/Jeff Phillips collab? Jk 😂). Another great person who deals with environmental issues, specifically fighting in cars, is Craig Douglas from Shivworks (which Paul Sharp is a part of, btw). Craig has a specific class called VCAST (Vehicular Combatives and Shooting Tactics), a three-day class in which you understand how traditional grappling, striking and weapons access change drastically when you’re inside of or next to a car. Would recommend to dive deep into both of them, too! And thank you for showing everyone how great Jeff’s training is. Thank you again for another great vid, man! Much respect

    I wholeheartedly support any attempt to gather the various martial arts TH-camrs together and film a series at the self-defense school so that we know who the SECOND best self defense expert is.
    We all know that the best one hands down will be Master Ken with his Ameridote.

    I heard of other schools doing similar things. Unfortunately they never remain popular or in business. However sounds like a good school to train at.

    This is mind altering content that makes you wake up- unless you've been in a street situation such as those, you'll know how un reliable or even counter productive most traditional martials arts are - if you could organize a self defense world competition with full gear on and real life settings like this guy does, it would be completely new and ground breaking and surely as entertaining as MMA, I'm sure plenty of people would help you figuring out a realistic scoring system, full support !

    Really hope it comes to pass. I have nothing but respect to all the great people you mentioned, just remember, if master Ken comes in the door all bets are off
