  • If your steering box is done in there is really not much to be done for it outside of replacement. We show how to check for suspension and steering issues that can seem like steering box play. But we also show that sometimes all you can do is grease it and save up money for a new one.

On my ‘64 Falcon, I thought I would just go in and replace a couple bushings, that turned into adding a couple ball joints, that turned into replacing EVERYTHING on the steering and suspension. 🙄

Easiest way to grease box is remove one of the lower bolts and the fill plug. Then use a grease gun to fill from the lower bolt hole till starts to ooze from the fill plug. Easy pezy. To adjust, loosen lock nut and add half turn to adj screw. If it's still has play add a little more. Probably best to drive vehicle between adjustments.

The go-to guy to to rebuild classic Ford steering boxes is Chockostang. He is often seen on the largest Mustang forum: Vintage Mustang Forum.

An easier and cleaner way to grease it is you turn the steering wheel to full right turn then remove the vent cap and the farthest cap screw and use a grease gun to put the grease in the vent hole until it comes out the cap screw hole. Then turn the steering wheel to full lock the other direction and add more grease until it starts to come out the cap screw hole. Then you are done.

Fantastic video. Rebuilt steering boxes are on back order for my truck so I may try this method.

Just looked at our steering gear box. I think we will be taking ours out and painting it. Do you have a recommendation for a Ford correct matching paint? Thanks for another video.

Could you remove the cap and put a grease zero in the cap. To make greasing the steering box easier?

You can use a fish scale to check the box

Borgeson makes a box for the Falcon. Not cheap though.

Those look pretty sweet, and you don't have to spin the wheel like Captain Jack Sparrow to turn the car anymore.

I have a 69 F100 with a power steering box. I was wondering if the power steering boxes needed to be greased like you demonstrated in this video? Thanks!!

This is going to sound cheeky but I would actually consult the service manual to see for sure. Or you can go out tofordification.com and see if that has been covered there.

If you do put an upgraded collapsible box in it, I would love to see that, since I have a 66 Ranchero with that same "Spear" column, and would love an upgrade.

Pretty sure if I tried that I'd end up with grease everywhere including the inside of the exhaust pipe and the underside of the dash pad.

It's the one time in life I will say that 4 inches is excessive.

  • @fknows1

why can't you just replace the upper ball joints, unless the inner bushes and pin are worn out as well, its a shame I'm so far away I'd have that box as good as new in no time for you, just needs a clean out and readjusting correctly, on the worm and sector shaft, doesn't need a new box

What is the best way to adjust the adjustment screw.

    • @fknows1
      @fknows1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@mycontinental3611 remove top cover so you can see what is happening inside the steering box first, undo adjustment screw, (if you don't know the box condition) see if the worm shaft or worm drive has excessive movement or feels knochie, than reinstall top plate, with steering box in centre position, screw down adjustment screw until the box has correct free play and load.

You are as usual sooooo incorrect on this procedure. I have said this before on other videos of yours, do a little research before you make a video and act like you know what you are doing. The correct procedure is described by jeffdriver3000 in the comments.
