Fun fact about Oh Comely: Jeff recorded the entire song in one take, and you can actually hear someone else in the studio yell "Holy shit!" at the end.
I fully agree on holland 1945. The last verse where he says: ''And here's where your mother sleeps And here is the room where your brothers were born Indentions in the sheets Where their bodies once moved but don't move anymore'' Makes it feel emotional despite being an explosive fast paced track
also, if you haven't listened to Amigo the Devil, I'd really love to see you guys listen to the album Born Against. People call his music "Murderfolk" but his lyrics hit deep
Great reaction, guys! I was lucky enough to grow up on NMH and the whole Elephant 6 collective. This album shaped me as an artist. Thanks for the video. alway great to see people reacting to 90’s indie!
I was waiting for this reaction, one of my all time fav album, hope your dad liked it, (havent watched the video yet , just commented to show my appriciation).
I am blown away that you would listen to such a unique/niche album for the first time.. while being recorded. 😮 I am about 20 yr older than you but we have similar taste. I found this band because one of the members was associated with another group that I was in love with at that time. Someone in my college photo class handed me and CD and said you will like this. That band was called Beirut and I HIGHLY recommend it to you. Skim through a few songs on the first two albums and see what you think. 🙏🏼 😅
Others have mentioned Anne Frank already but she's definitely a major theme throughout the record. Jeff Mangum, to me, had some sort of parasocial relationship with her where he imagined going back in time and rescuing her and having some relationship with her and saving her from the horrors of war, but in thinking about that it seems to me like there are so many really personal associations about adolescence and childhood trauma that he just puts right out there for us to see. It's very dense and I think anyone claiming to understand every reference is delusional, but the reason it speaks to me and probably so many others is that, as quirky as the Anne Frank focus is, it's kind of beautiful and endearing and sympathetic in ways that many of us wouldn't like to admit, especially not in such a public venue as writing an entire album full of this stuff and putting it out there for all the world to see. It feels personal in a way very little music truly does.
i love seeing the moment in your face during holland 1945 when the effects of this album truly kick in. its just a feeling the oozes from every song and once you get it, you get it.
Just discovered your videos and love hearing your thoughts on the songs. This and In Rainbows are some of my favorite albums and your reactions, particularly when it comes to the lyrics, is making me appreciate them even more! Btw, I would love to hear your thoughts on Twin Fantasy by Car Seat Headrest!
This album has been One of the biggest influences in my personal music. It also room lights me a lot of Neil Young's self-titled album I think came out in 1970. Good call on doing the microphones the glow part 2 soon, there's definitely a line connecting these two albums. Got their albums I'd recommend are death cab for cutie's Transatlanticism, The decemberists's the crane wife (there might be a lot of debate on this one but this is my personal favorite decemberists album. I love the progginess of it) the arcade fire's funeral, and if you like the noisy low-fi vibe of it Bright Eyes' Fever and Mirrors and/or Lifted.
I never listen to this album because it’s so special to me. I don’t wanna ruin it for myself. There definitely needs to be more reaction videos to this album. This fulfills a great niche here on TH-cam
If you like this sort of music you should check out the album "Black Sheep Boy" by Okkervil River ... a lot of people point to it as kindred spirit to Neutral Milk Hotel and they have a lot of similarly intense visually poetic lyrics.
I always took the line 'semen stains the mountain tops' to represent something pure being tainted, much like the seaweed in the water. It's not too much of a stretch given the masturbatory line that followed. I think some of the word choices in that one were purely due to how the words sound, rather than particular meaning.
I still remember listening to the first few bars of King of Carrot Flowers after purchasing the album online (never hearing anyhting from the band before) and just getting the feeling that this was something different, something special. And the rest of the albumlived up to that feeling.
One day, I'd love a Swans reaction! Best band of all time IMO but i get it if their usual 2hr runtime is too much. Maybe Karma by Pharoah Sanders? An amazing jazz record at 30 mins, one of the best and most beautiful pieces of music ever conceived ❤
I don’t want to be a request guy, but “Loveless” by my bloody valentine is a very unique and beloved album that would probably be interesting for your dad to hear
I didn’t understand the backstory of this album when I first listened to it. I had a far better appreciation for it after that. (PS it’s about The Diary Of Anee Frank)
This was a great reaction 🤯👍 definitely subbing. I hope you'll find the time to react to Ys by Joanna Newsom, which is head and shoulders above all other albums for me. It's a critical darling as well, but their opinion doesn't matter as much as mine, because I'm me and they're not 😂

i love how your dads always like “LETS GO NEXT SONG”
This album was kind of the gateway to the left field indie folk explosion of the early to late 2000s
You both are absolutely incredible, wholesome, and fun individuals. Please never stop doing this
The music hasn't even started and I subscribed. I love your banter
also, if you haven't listened to Amigo the Devil, I'd really love to see you guys listen to the album Born Against. People call his music "Murderfolk" but his lyrics hit deep
This album never gets old. It gets better with every listen. It invokes deep feelings.
Glad to see you reacting to this album, love the reactions you do!
thank you so much

"You were two headed when your were born, I cut one of your heads off" lmfao
Anne Frank is a big theme on this album. Thats also why one song is called Holland, 1945 where she hid during the german occupation.
i find it crazy neither of us picked that up every single sign went to it
I have listened to this album a million times and didn't pick up on the holocaust themes until I was an adult years later
@@partycitydumpster Same. Been listening to it a lot over the past week :(
The greatest album in history. Always a joy to see anyone experience it for the first time.
Could you explain all the semen lines in the album
I just find them weird

This and The Glow pt 2 are milestones that any good react channel will cross, in my view
Listen to this album at full blast and sing it at the top of your lungs. The best!

and geeked
Just found this channel! You should give Glow Pt. 2 a try if you loved the lo-fi aesthetics of this one.
well it’s perfect because i mentioned it in the video LOL we will definitely do that
