My goodness. Each one a totally bona fide star with a lifetime of honing their craft to perfection. So unlike today's reality tv people and autocue readers. This was entertainment!
I worked in the stalls here, the guy in the monkey suit ripping tickets and pointing you to your usherette to seat you. This was my first job. I started two weeks before I turned 16 and worked for 2 years. This was sooo amazing. I was star struck. This was the years we’re king and I years with Yul Bryner and Virginia McKenna …. Boy they were good times..
@@SUECLAPSON I started 2 weeks before I turned 16, worked through the king and I, and 2 royal variety shows, also worked at the Geilgood, drury lane, and sooo many more in those years, with webbers Evita, Cats, daisy pulls it off…. And again, so many more. Great memories.
SO MAGNIFICENT! Thank you so much, Malcolm! I got awfully misty, watching so many of them: but when James Cagney (my life's idol, really) was announced and he walked on ... with Pat O'Brien ... I just started weeping; didn't expect to, but ... . THANK YOU! - VCH & Midlantic Theatre Co., Newark, NJ, USA - Social Justice & Environmental Awareness
Every time I watch this it brings back wonderful memories of my Grandma Sarah. I know the artists, literally, I know the songs. Now I have grandchildren and I know I impart a little of my past to them, and, because I know them as well as myself, I know they will remember me for it and that’s a rather warm feeling.
James Cagney was in London for filming of RAGTIME. He reused to fly so travelled from New York on the QE2. His appearance here was a closely guarded secret - even from some of the other acts, as I was not clear if Mr. Cagney would attend until the day of the show.
@ 15:15 the amazing Lillian Gish. She is 87 years old here and had a career in movies that spanned from 1912 - 1987. She was a pioneer of cinema as a silent screen actress and died just short of 100 years old in 1993.
There is on TH-cam a video of Cagney & O'Brien being interviewed by Michael Parkinson.....have to say it made me shed a tear the comments made by James about his friendship with Pat...
I wonder how today's comedians with all their vulgarity and profanity would have gone down here in 1980? The mind boggles with how far down the road of depravity we have come!
I was working backstage on props (stage left). Dave, the prop master and I were sent to Moss Bros the day before to be fitted for evening suits as we had to go on that night and collect chairs etc. Favourite moments: Seeing Sammy Davis Jnr. , Danny Kaye and asking Peggy Lee if she wanted a chair.
Il try to name the old variety gargoyles. Entering from the right, front to back, Chesney Allen, Billy Dainty, Charlie Drake, Charlie Chester, Arthur English, Cyril Fletcher, Tommy Trinder. Entering from the left, front to back, Sandy Powell, Ben Warris, Richard Murdoch, Arthur Askey, Stanley Holloway, Roy Hudd.
Well ... I might call it a TINY bit unkind to call these brilliant professionals, "gargoyles?" But I do hope and trust you mean it affectionately and joshingly, of course. Thanks for naming them.
Who would've thought that 40 years on Arthur would be forgotten and as irrelevant as the Queen mother? Less than 1400 views. A Kardashian's on 5mill plus. It's all over. Would I fight for this country?... Nope.. I don't know what it is anymore.
I remember Arthur Askey and Tommy Trinder very well. Even in those days, they were both about as funny as a bad case - a very bad case - of toothache combined with a migraine.
comedy was shite then,? what planet are you on? if you think comedy has moved on, comedy now is dead as a door nail. every one of the so called comedians today are far from funny & there,s not one that could make ya laugh or be anywhere near as funny as the past comedians we had, but thank god for youtube cos instead of watching up to date comedy crap on tv, we can come on here & watch real comedians that we had in the past. & know that we can have a good laugh.
Bit of a back-handed compliment to the Queen Mother to wheel on the zombie squad ... like singing war time songs to the captive audience in an old folks home.
Most of the new comedians today are crap. They all run around the stage swearing and think that is funny. They cannot stand there and tell a good joke.
My goodness. Each one a totally bona fide star with a lifetime of honing their craft to perfection. So unlike today's reality tv people and autocue readers. This was entertainment!
Bringing back wonderful memories of Arthur from the Palladium in 1968 when i got to see him along with Engelbert Humperdinck.

every single video, some twat invents a story like this and embellishes it with more bullshit, hoping for attention
I went to that King &l...it was great, never to be forgotten!

Just absolutely wonderful. Such history. Entertainment as it should be. Thank you very much indeed
What a great tape, all those proper stars on one stage. Thank you Malcolm.
You are welcome. I am glad this upload has produced so many positive responses. Pity I didn't record the complete show but that's hindsight for you!

Life was so much better in the past. I hate what we have become as a country and a people. Wind the clocks back. 😢

@@MalcolmDrew My pleasure Malcolm. Thanks for all the excellent uploads. Stay Safe.
Thank you for sharing I was there that night it was magical
You were? How WONDERFUL!
What an amazing line up.

Oh thank you for this tape,I have really enjoyed it.
This is truly wonderful to watch
.brings a lump to my throat, so beautiful
I always had a memory of Cagney coming on stage in a wheelchair, convinced of it. How your memory can play tricks on you.
Sadly... Cagney was wheelchair bound for the 1984 T.V. movie 'Terrible Joe Moran'... such a physically fearless performer in his prime...
There is on TH-cam a video of Cagney & O'Brien being interviewed by Michael Parkinson.....have to say it made me shed a tear the comments made by James about his friendship with Pat...
Love Arthur askey I have one of my favourite comedy films The Love Match on DVD with Thora Hurd so funny bless his heart
Bernard Manning suggested Arthur Askey's act was like a burning orphanage.
I remember this one very well. Thank you for sharing.

What a line up of great stars.
What a great show thats real entertainment bloody rubbish now wish we were back in them days
xo xo xo Love James Cagney.
Always a treat to see Cagney! Yankee Doodle came to London not to ride the ponies but to flim Ragtime with his good bud Pat...
Yes! My life's favorite and idol ...
@@MsVirginiaHammer Yorkville Jim's 1980 Kennedy Honours salute has recently been uploaded to TH-cam. Emotional stuff...

Ahhhhhh, how wonderful! SO jealous ...
I was there that night.... I'm looking for DANNY KAYE who topped the bill , if any one can find him .... or the whole show!!
I remembered Danny kaye in this he sat on a box and was amazing Real class
Legendary stars of the past 😢
Lovely to see some of the 'greats'. Sorry Sammy Davis jnr wasn't included, I bet he was amazing to see live.
Thank you, anyway.
James helped Pat so much.

Stanley Holloway was 90 in 1980 wow

@@MsVirginiaHammer Sorry for the late reply - yes I was only joking! x.
This was the one where the great Larry Hagman blew his lines, and his mother, the actress Mary martin jumped in to help him .
From this 1980 production - i'd like the whole show but if any one has the Danny Kaye - end of Act II I would be thrilled.
I'd like the whole show, too. As I mentioned earlier, seeing Sammy Davis jnr would have been great.
EXCELLENT ❤😂❤😂😂❤
Real talent. Real celebrities. Not the paper thin, talented rubbish we have today.
Everything you always wanted to know about the death of variety but were afraid to ask
Gordon Jackson ... what an old ham ...
Just wow ...!!
Save the best for last... James Cagney!
Hes also the funniest turn as well
The Larry Hagman meltdown has been cut out of this recording. His mother Mary Martin had to help him out!
12:07 you would think they could pick a better stand in for Bud Flanagan.
In the days when entertainment was naughty but clean.
Some faces from the past there 😊
What a line up ?
Arthur Askey - described by Bernard Manning as 'funny as a burning orphanage'.
Oh, my goodness!
Who were the guys after Roy hudd I know all except them
Chesney allen (from flanagan and allen) and billy dainty
Only 5 still alive from that bill as of Dec 2022. 6 if u include Angela Ripemm
Who would've thought that 40 years on Arthur would be forgotten and as irrelevant as the Queen mother?
Less than 1400 views.
A Kardashian's on 5mill plus.
It's all over.

The best entertainment was a young man Paul squire
I remember Arthur Askey and Tommy Trinder very well. Even in those days, they were both about as funny as a bad case - a very bad case - of toothache combined with a migraine.
ah Trinder! What a wally
Brilliant

This is what fawning sicophancy looks like.
What a great twerp Askey was. A one song Jonney!
That's one more than you.
You best watch repeats of Bernard Manning...He washes his mouth out with Damascus between so called jokes
Proper stars not like the nobody's we get today
Arthur asked earned a bleedinfortune singing about a bee… he earned a good few bob out of it…creep
You try then
@ ooooo was he’s relation
Arthur Askey, what a bore! As for Rod Hull , I've had funnier toothaches.
It's obvious you don't appreciate the great talents of Arthur Askey and Rod Hull,
maybe you shouldn't of watched this brilliant show.
Thank god comedy moved on....i. was in my twenties when. this was on it was shite then and it’s even more shite now...
Yes, much cleverer now. 1001 ways to say the 'F'word
