What is important to know for Music Theory when it comes to learning Jazz? Wasting your time on too many scales? th-cam.com/video/NEvBZTD-f6s/w-d-xo.html
I’ve always loved these vids because they assume you know the basics, and explain advanced concepts very clearly an concisely. Now Jens is hitting the basics… To those not understanding what they’re seeing, he just explained first semester music theory (minus concepts of 18th Century voice leading a jazz player doesn’t use) in just under 13 minutes. Thank you.
u help me train myself somehow thank you, most heavy metal bands nowadays cant play properly so they play jazz fusion so they can learn at the same time. better to be prepared than not at all
My mind is so totally not being blown by this. Whenever I hear that Major/minor axis shift, I hear the makings of a classical progression. Adding the diminished in contrast is only lending itself to more sonic exploration. I hear many notes weaving complex chordal harmony even within monophony. It is a great thing when you can write single note lines that don't justify any other notation entities. Except maybe double etc octives.
This is great! I noticed the metronome on your table; how often are you practicing with a physical metronome? I want to buy one because I think it will get me in the habit of using it more.
I love your videos! I just wish that the graphical representations of the neck and frets were in the same orientation as your guitar... instead of upside-down and backwards.
More of a wish than a complaint. To be clear, it would be nice to view the low strings at the top of the graphic fret board the same way that your video displays on your guitar fretboard. After all you are presenting it to the audience. But I can adapt. Nothing but love to you and for all your knowledge and efforts!🙃@@JensLarsen
@@markhoffman2322 Maybe it is because it is just text, but to me you make it sound like I am ignoring your wishes on purpose, when in fact I would be ignoring 99% of the audience if I was to take you up on this. To be clear, We are all used to reading it this way and we have all been doing that for decades. My analogy with reading right to left is not totally off here. Remember that I use standard software for notation (just like every other book or channel you will come across). Just because you find it difficult does not mean that it is difficult everybody else.
love your stuff all the time but I find it a bit rushed ...I suggest you leave a little space at the end of each suggestion..... like 2 and a half seconds lol ...ps loved your forbidden minor chords sequences
I use the play and pause buttons as often as I need to. I rewind with the cursor. With the 'cog' icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen, I can slow the video down. That works for me. It should work for you too. Good luck. 🙂
Concept explained here might be basic, but why use jargon when video is obviously addressed to beginners. Why not explain it in plain language…. It creates confusion instead of clarity.
I'M GOING TO WRITE MY COMMENT HERE IN CAPITAL LETTERS TO EMPHASISE HOW IMPORTANT, USEFUL AND POWERFUL EVERYTHING IN THIS VIDEO IS. TEACH YOURSELF EVERYTHING IN THIS VIDEO. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. IT IS NOT AS TRICKY AS IT FIRST LOOKS. DON'T JUST WATCH IT, THINK 'OH THAT'S NICE' AND PUT IT ASIDE. REVIEW THE VIDEO AS MUCH AS YOU NEED TO. PLAY IT. SLOW IT DOWN VIA THE COG ICON IF NECESSARY. ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU WANT. YOU CAN USE EVERYTHING IN THIS VIDEO TO PLAY JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU WILL EVER PLAY. I'VE USED THIS STUFF IN RECORDING, SOLOING, LIVE GIGS, IMPROV (EVEN WITH SONGS AND BANDS I DIDN'T KNOW - ON THE SPOT). THESE MATERIALS OPEN THE DOOR TO EVERYTHING ELSE YOU WILL EVER PLAY. IF YOU TEACH YOURSELF TO SPELL DIADS, TRIADS AND SEVENTH ARPEGGIOS (AS PER THIS VIDEO), YOU WILL KNOW THE NOTES TO USE FOR CHORDS, LICKS, RIFFS - YOU NAME IT. Good luck. If it helps, I have a 'sandwich trick' for memorising construction of a Major Scale. R = Root, W = Whole Step, H = Half Step. 'W, W, H' is either top or bottom slice - with a W in between. W, W, H (bottom slice) W (Cheese in the middle) then W, W, H (top slice) Major Scale = Root, then: W W H - W - W W H 🍞🧀🍞

6:35 was that a pitch meeting reference?! 🙌
Pitch meetings are tight! 😂
@@JensLarsen you are awesome!
Your videos a source of inspiration. I enjoy watching and rewatching over again.
Thank you! Glad you like them!
This is like a pocket book guide to jazz theory basics. Ive learned a lot. Thanks.
6:34 "Super easy, barely an inconvenience!" 😅😅 I see what you did there, Jens.

Great lesson for any aspiring guitar player! I’m not really a jazz guy, but I very much enjoy your content.
Great, Thank you 🙂
This is a great video thank you. I appreciate how you explain things simply and move on, building the bigger picture ;) Awesome thank you again
Glad it was helpful!
You are such a great inspirer! Thank you for explaining and organizing everything clearly.

Moin Jens Larsen,
Thank you very much for this interesting and helpfull Video
Thanks Teacher, Im learning a lot with your music.
Great to hear 🙂
Ohh combining the knowledge of the chord with the diatonic harmony is tight!
Chords are really just a meeting of pitches! 😎

Thanks man! I needed this 😎
Glad I could help!
Amazing!

The trick would be to add a dominant chord without making it too obvious.
Classical music mixes very well with Jazz. Ask Chic Chorea.
The Major flat 5 is also pretty good for playing the Simpsons theme! by the sound of it! 😁 (I hope you haven't pointed that out later in the video?!)
Indeed!
Yeah! Totally a Lydian feel
This is great! I noticed the metronome on your table; how often are you practicing with a physical metronome? I want to buy one because I think it will get me in the habit of using it more.
Thank you! I pretty much use that metronome everyday, but it is digital, so in that respect it is not that different from a phone app 🙂
Thank yiou!
Йенс, привет! Я получаю у тебя сразу два оброзования, английский язык с музыкальным уклоном и музыку непосредственно! Спасибо!
Thank you so much this was so helpful!
You're so welcome!
Super episode !!
L’histoire de Zappa: c’est OUI ;)

@@JensLarsen Just letting you know I got that reference haha

That is the way that most people do that check some books or other online resources 🙂

Wish I saw this video in my 20s. I wasted a lot of time memorizing scale patterns without knowing what any of the notes were.
Student Jens: “But we’re talking about jazz chords here… is making 7th chords hard?”

I'm sure most people on here would love to be a Pat Metheny clone.
I’d be good with being a clone of a clone of a clone of Pat Metheny

What type of jargon are you referring to?
there was an Ad about how the index fingers are the connectors to playing guitar fluently👇but not for me i play with this finger instead🖕
I would be happy to sound like a Pat Metheny clone.
So would I 👍😁
