    Who the devil are you? You are teaching people the correct way to do this work in the simplest way possible. A friend told me once he always wanted to be on my crew because I had a good reason for the way I did everything and I hate wasting time and energy. You are better than I am in that respect and you explain it in a way that people want to listen to you. That in itself is an art form. Cheers to you sir. Thank you.

    One thing about written off clear title vehicles: if the owner has a full replacement rider on their insurance, if an accident diminishes the value of the vehicle by x amount, the insurance company HAS to write it off and replace the vehicle even though it isn't truly "totaled".
    A buddy of mine had a 1 yr old maxima (tells you how long ago this happened) and got into an accident. Caused $6000 in damages. It was written off, they handed him a cheque for $21K, he bought it off them for $5000, repaired it for $6000, and walked off with a profit of $10,000.00.

      My insurance didn't give me a clear title, they declared salvaged but still bought it back. To get title back from DMV, the repair has to done by a certified salvage rebuild shop.

    Very curious what caused the insurance company to punt on this one. They usually shrug off the accelerated depreciation angle. Up until the end I figured it was parts availability. I've seen a few vehicles get totaled simply because the parts can't be found and nobody knows when they'll be available and the insurance company can't just keep the file open forever. But then you mentioned that you're getting new parts from Toyota. So it's a puzzler!

    • @grahamdavies8986
      @grahamdavies8986 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Parts availability is exactly what I was thinking too initially. The only other thing I can think of is with all those dash lights being on scared either the insurance company or body shop that looked at it and figured it wasn't worth the headache.

    • @vehcor
      @vehcor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Parts availability was 100% the reason. If you notice the snow, I have been waiting a while for the parts, since February.

      @@vehcor after I watched this I started watched the first 2 videos of the 2017 Terrain rebuild and noticed you mentioned a RAV4 in one of the comments. So I figured it out after reading that. Working on the insurance side of things I get why they would total the vehicle for this as the owner likely had some kind of replacement cost endorsement on their policy.

    So just to help out with some of the curiosity about the whole title issue on this one…and real quick I wanna say that I’m thoroughly hooked on all facets of this business…I also still work the floor everyday even though the real money is made in the office…I’m a 2ndgeneration owner who’s dad/boss sent him to just about every type of continuous learning possible in order to get these insurance companies in line as far as payment is concerned…and it worked very well…your channel is awesome to say the least and your sense of humor mimics the way it really is in most of the old school shops…we still get to have fun while fixing cars while all the other MSO guys are trying to please insurance companies while praying that they don’t do or say the wrong thing and get eliminated from the program they should have never signed up for anyway…
    So back to the title issue…so atleast in PA there is no “gray” area it’s either totaled or it’s not totaled…the only ways a vehicle can end up at a an auction is bc the vehicle was in an accident and the customer either paid cash and did not insure the car or let it lapse(more likely) and decided to part ways with it at the dealer as a trade in and the dealer sent it to an auction or same that same scenario but instead of a trade in the vehicle get repossessed by the leinholder…those examples are pretty much the only way that car keeps its title…so basically you got yourself a real money maker that you won’t have any problem selling nor do you need to disclose that it was ever in an accident…due to all the money paid out for DV claims most insurers don’t even report to carfax anymore…hope that clears it things up for some people…again the channel is great keep up the great work man…

    My mom has this same RAV4, with the wheels and color (sans the panaroof; she has the smaller sunroof option). Love the way it looks. Btw, I'm not sure how hard it is to pull the whole rear seats out but at least the bottom cushions were actually quite easy to pop out. They are just held in place with the white push pins like the bumper. After that's been removed, you can check on the status of the hybrid batteries from the top but I think I remember there also being an extra metal heat shield right underneath the cushions, though.
    You may also want to check on the hybrid battery air filter located on the rear passenger side, on the corner under the seat. All that's needed is a flat head screwdriver and a pry tool for the one push clip. Figured that if water may have found its way into the hybrid battery compartment, the filter might need a good washing.
    Can't wait to see the rest of the videos for this!

That short video you had yesterday with the damaged brand new vehicle is something that should never have happened.. You'd wonder what the story behind that was. • @warrenepstein1348
      @warrenepstein1348 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      my guess is that the hybrids have so many electronics and sensors that the smallest disturbance will cause massive codes to be thrown.the cost of the sensors and electronic repairs can rapidly push the repair to a total loss so, insurance companies dont want to take the risk .The appraisers/shops remove as many coverings and shroudings as possible to uncover the damage and once they discover the possibility of further damage they declare the vehicle total loss.since this vehicle was rear ended, the insurance company probably decided to take the car and pay the owner a high price in this market. The personal injury payout will be big as well.

    • @tails300
      @tails300 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@warrenepstein1348 it really depends on the trim level, this was a fully loaded XSE. That means that probably has rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alerts, and a power lift gate. A more basic LE trim wouldn’t have any of that except for the backup camera (which they all have). I’m also guessing parts availability was huge factor too with how things are right now with material shortages.

    I driven a few of these ones. XSE Hybrid, LE Hybrid, XLE Hybrid, and SE PRIME HYBRID (just to move it out of the way in the detail bay). The de facto creme de la creme of these guys wouldn’t be the Limited, it would be the XSE PRIME W/ Technology Package since it has the panoramic moonroof. I prefer the hybrids to gas since the sound is quieter during acceleration. The insulator pad under the hood for the gas ones didn’t come equipped until the 2021 model year.

    This is a classic rebuild. I recently rebuilt a 2020 NIssan Rogue with 2100 miles on it. Cost me about $2500 in parts (mostly airbags) and a week or so of my own part time labor. The main difference with your RAV4 is that mine had a Salvage title that I had to convert to a rebuilt title. It's hard to understand how totaling cars like this make sense.

    • @danielbutler578
      @danielbutler578 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe you should look at the estimate from a body shop for the same kind of damage. My 2014 Nissan Sentra was estimated at nearly $7000 for repairs and nearly $4000 of that was for 1 airbag and related parts and 2 seat belts which the insurance company requires to be new parts. 8 years ago my 2004 Toyota Corolla was totaled because the front bumper cover is damaged and the left rear door is smashed in and the B pillar is slightly bent. The rocker panel is bent in but everything still works and nothing leaks. The estimate was for $5800 and the car was appraised at $7200 by my insurance company. We never got it fixed and kept it as a backup vehicle. It is now our primary vehicle until we get another car. We are looking for a late model Toyota Camry but prices are insanely high and we have decided to wait for the highway robbery to stop at the stealerships.

  • @jdcunnington

    Putting on my estimator hat here.
    "Total loss" isn't just the damaged parts. It's all the R&I (remove and re-install) of parts that have to be moved to get at the damaged parts, and can be impacted by insurance company rules about use of salvage/aftermarket parts versus OEM parts. These vary. American Family is very tight on use of aftermarket and salvage. Geico is more loose on it. Check with your agent for specific rules if interested. I digress. Half the job expense can be R&I, depending on what was damaged. Just from the first 2:20 of this, I agree with Scott's assessment - bumper cover, absorber, impact bar, liftgate. In addition, there may be some quarter panel and rear body panel damage. If so, all those panels, the spare tire, wiring, lights will all be R&I expense. In addition, with collision avoidance, the sensors may need replacing and will certainly need recalibration. Recal by itself is a $500 to $1000 job. Because of those sensors, there are probably limits as to how much paint can be put on the bumper, so it may need to be stripped or the anti-collision systems may not work.
    Now let's dig in and see what else there is.

    • @jdcunnington
      @jdcunnington 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      3:27 - the top of the liftgate has been pushed forward. Possible hinge damage, possible in the mount points also. The valance at the top of the liftgate is a separate piece. Figure out how to remove that and maybe the gate goes up farther.
      8:05 - aluminum hatch - Aluminum does not pull out dents like steel. Even if the damage were less, I'd still say replace it. When assessing a car, bring a magnet.
      12:55 - bumper off, we see damage on the impact bar. Not really a surprise. This could mean the frame rails got pulled toward the middle. We'll have to see.
      13:30 - he says the frame rails are straight. The floor would be buckled if they were not. The part marked RV3 on the left side of the tailgate is the collision avoidance radar. Any collision in that area, the part should be replaced. That's not the case here.
      Pretty much no surprises on this one.

    • @grahamdavies8986
      @grahamdavies8986 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the height of the other vehicle it might have gone over the trailer hitch, or just glanced off the top of it. The rebars are also designed to deform like that during an impact to help absorber as much energy as possible. Trailer hitches, depending on what they are rated for, tend to be much stiffer and stronger than the rebars. Not sure if the hitch is planning on being replaced or not, as it wasn't overly clear to me if it had taken a direct impact or not. But if it does need to be replaced I hope it isnt as expensive as the hitches Toyota puts on the Tundra's.

      Funnily enough, as the owner of a 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Platinum awd, which also has a long name, the sound you hear is actually a speaker. When these are reversing, it is fully on electric. Since the power split transmission can only Propel the vehicle forward, reverse is electric motors only. To comply with federal law in the United States, Toyota had to make the vehicle make a sound when the internal combustion engine is not running, and the car is not in park. Their solution was simply to put a speaker in the front grille, and behind the rear bumper, and when you go into drive, the speaker in the front grill turns on, and when you go into reverse, the speaker in the rear bumper turns on. It makes like an 8 tone hum.
