- In this video I share basic nesting box tips that have worked great for us. I hope this information is helpful to you crafting nesting boxes your hens will use and love.
Note. I realized during editing I mention baskets an alternative nesting box type twice, but I didn't have time to re-record the audio.

My father never had a coop or nesting boxes, he just knew where the chickens laid eggs 🥚, I did research for about a year before building my first stationary chicken coop, my nest boxes may be the most different on TH-cam 😂
I value different perspectives. I know that every backyard is different and what works well for us doesn't apply to every chicken situation. So many factors impact the nuances of care you choose to provide for your flock. If your box design is drastically different than mine but it is working great for your flock, that is wonderful!
@ChuckTheRooster I'm in the tropics, people raise chickens differently here, here backyard chicken owners keep chickens in open coops running around free ranging. Chickens provide a great protein food source and are kept around here for some food security. Hurricane Maria changed my way of keeping chickens, Hurricane Maria killed about 98% of my flock. Maria was a total grid down in Puerto Rico, now imagine no supermarkets, no gas, no banks, no communication for over a month...and on top of that, you now have no fresh protein source. Luckily I was a prepper during that time, but it dramatically changed the way I did things...My nest boxes work great, but they haven't been tested yet for a catastrophic hurricane, they are built out of welded steel and have lights that go on if I have to collect eggs in the dark, all power and water of coop is 100% off grid, it may be the first coop designed to stand up to a catastrophic hurricane 🌀...like I said, different.

We are re-building the coop and run. Our 7 hens will need to learn to lay eggs in new nesting boxes that face a totally diferent way. Anyone got any tips for persuading them to try the new boxes please?
Anything you can do to make the boxes as accessible to them as possible is likely to make them more appealing. I don't know if they will be high but if so additional roosts or a ramp to make them easier to access may be helpful. I would use their favorite box liner. My flock really loves fresh straw. You can place a few fake eggs or even some of their previous eggs in the new boxes to show them they are safe to use. When you initially install the new boxes you can also keep them in the coop slightly later in the morning than you usually do, an additional half hour or hour in the coop with the new boxes to entice them to give them a try on that first day. I hope this is helpful!

I wouldn't recommend exceeding more than an hour delay, I say this because in my own experience my own flock can get very agitated if I'm running late, but yes just a little bit of additional time in their coop on the first day the boxes are installed may be helpful to encourage them to use their new boxes. Fake eggs 🥚, but first you have to put food inside coop so they know it's home, they will explore and find the dummy eggs and lay.
