  • Interview with Trey Anastasio from the band Phish in 1993.
I have a long, strange history with Phish. I’m an admirer-nobody dares do what Phish does routinely, which is to play a completely different show and challenge its audience-and a skeptic, because sometimes, they step on their dicks.
In 1997, after the August 10 Phish concert at Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana, I wrote one of the most negative reviews I ever wrote about anyone. The oft-quoted line is this: “To be blunt (and paraphrase the title of a popular book), Phish could urinate in its fans’ ears and tell them it’s music. The fans, in turn, would be there with tape recorders to capture the moment.”
There was not much Internet to speak of at the time, so the review made its way around the Phish world slowly. Angry letters trickled in for the next year or so.
But to his everlasting credit-and one of the reasons I’ll always be a Phish fan-Trey Anastasio responded like this. • Trey Anastasio reading...
At the time of this interview, in 1993, I was strictly an admirer, and Trey and I had a great conversation. The band had put out “A Picture of Nectar,” its third studio album, the previous year, and was about to play in Indianapolis at the 2,400-seat Murat Theatre. But most of our talk was about jamming and taping and the phenomenon that Phish was about to become.
In rereading the transcript after all these years, it’s funny to think that Phish was, at the time, being compared with the Spin Doctors, a band that bit the dust (commercially) not long after. With the benefit of hindsight, we now know that no one compares with Phish.

@@marcallan9930 i agree w your review. the fans would lap up having their ears pissed in. they've had their ears pissed in fo 30 yrs and phish laufghs all the way to the bank. i am not a phish fan. i was commenting regarding using dead lyrics when referencing phish. dead heads get very annoyed w phish fans using dead lingo & wish they would just stop ripping of gd culture. they should stick to what they invented - trampolines, lizards and dresses

@@jkweddingentrancesux Who gives a shit if a Dead fan or anyone for that matter gets annoyed by the way words are written? I think most Dead fans are a lot smarter than you and show nothing but love to Phish fans. Such a petty comment from someone that stole a porn star's name.

What's music going to be like in the year 2000?
Phish plays the new year at a Seminole Reservation in Florida.
Hires the people living there to do security. There biggest complaint was everyone wanted to HUG us. I could go on...
but boy oh boy Trey has composed some great works. Gyute, plays with a high school orchestra. Does a one night string performance in Princeton, NJ. OMG . The covid shut down in 2020. Trey and Page duet.
Where is music going to be in 2000. Love it.
I'm so happy I listened to WXPN 88.5 in Philadelphia in 1994. They played Fast Enough for You from Rift. And I was hooked.
Saw Phish at the Tower Theater and they played Black Furry Creatures from Mars. I thought the plaster would fall from the ceiling. Lol
    People were taping the show.
Oh, I thought, I found my band.
Every album has grown in maturity for all members.
Undermind, Joy, Fuego, Big Boat, Sigma Oasis.
It just doesn't stop. I love it.
I'm so happy inside I got into the net with phish phans. Happy happy oh my friends....

I don't know how many people here I'm assuming a lot that would listen to this improv music with other people but those silly little improv games really end up working out in the end! I used to do them in the late 90s early 2000s with my quote unquote band and we couldn't make a song to save our lives but mother f***** could we improv a song that would get everybody dancing

I saw the spin doctors a couple months ago they have new songs which were really enjoyable and they played really well. I’d highly recommend seeing them and I’ll see them whenever they come back around for sure

In the year 2000, the high school kids were listening to Koяn, and the venues stopped supporting the young bands. In 2020, there are plenty of guys shredding online and no good bands in the mainstream. :-(

Great interview from Trey. Lots of typos in the transcript, though.

At first I thought this guy really hates Phish... but then I realized he has actually a huge Phan because only people that can hate and criticize them that much, fit right in with the phans.

I've seen brilliant Phish shows and I've seen Phish shows -- one in particular -- that I'd rather forget. I like them, but more than like them, I admire them. They have fun and take chances. How many groups can you say that about?
