- We speak with Mansoor Adayfi, a former Guantánamo Bay detainee who was held at the military prison for 14 years without charge, an ordeal he details in his new memoir, “Don’t Forget Us Here: Lost and Found at Guantánamo.” Adayfi was 18 when he left his home in Yemen to do research in Afghanistan, where he was kidnapped by Afghan warlords, then sold to the CIA after the 9/11 attacks. Adayfi describes being brutally tortured in Afghanistan before he was transported to Guantánamo in 2002, where he became known as Detainee #441 and survived years of abuse. Adayfi was released against his will to Serbia in 2016 and now works as the Guantánamo Project coordinator at CAGE, an organization that advocates on behalf of victims of the war on terror. “The purpose of Guantánamo wasn’t about making Americans safe,” says Adayfi, who describes the facility as a “black hole” with no legal protections. “The system was designed to strip us of who we are. Even our names were taken.”

I can't begin to imagine what he went through and he's still smiling! I wish him a good life from now on.
Unfortunately no good wishes to him from now on can bring the half of his life that was stolen from him back to him. He was enslaved, tortured, humiliated physically, spiritually and religiously.

Mr Adayfi is an amazing person. I am humbled by his beautiful soul. His compassion for his guards is incredible. What happened to him should never be allowed even to the worst of criminals, let alone an innocent, such as himself.
Absolutely appalling treatment and torture by America; imagine having to spend most of your life in max security prison when you haven't been charged with any crime and committed none, and being regularly tortured and abused - these are all terrible human rights abuses for which America needs to be held to account. Adayfi's artwork is excellent, he is clearly a very talented person.

From UK: What happened to the guards at Treblinka, Auschwitz, Bergen Belsen, Buchenwald et al.? I think that they met a sticky end. The guards at Guantanamo will be haunted for the rest of their lives and probably will be unable to rein in their cruelties learned there... I feel sorry for the people around them.

@@tmnt10000 Back in 2009, on his third day in office, President Obama ordered the detention facilities at Guantanamo to be closed as soon as practicable, and no later than one year from the date of his order. But there were complications that made it difficult to accomplish this order. For instance, Congress placing restrictions on Guantanamo transfers in its yearly defense authorization bill.
Obama administration did not create Guatanamo or the Enhanced Interrogation techniques (torture). That was the Bush Administration. Is Obama completely innocent of any crimes? No. But Guantanamo, he did try to close.

I was 'born' in america. I am muslim woman. I am african 'born' in america. They took our names, our culture, our traditions, our way of life over 400 hundred years ago. We have lived for generations not even know where in Africa we originated or even what our original names were. Are you being sarcastic???.. This is not a "story", it's real!..Some people don't show their real emotions but you can tell when he slips into that thought, its disturbing. Many Detainees have been interviewed and have said the exact same thing. There are photographs and many evidences to prove what he's saying and the fact that he was kept their without any charge and has been released is proof he was innocent. The bounty flyer story is absolutely right, it happened in Pakistan too and many ex detainees have told harrowing stories about their experiences which are exactly the same.

ALLAH gave him strength and life to be here today and tell his story. So many innocent people are being incarcerated just because they are poor ethnic or muslim it's just so wrong I can't begin to imagine the racists of this world where babies and very old are not exempt from their evil. My heart is crying, Human being can be so cruel and devil to their own brothers and sisters. What kind of democracy is this buying innocent civilians put them in prison tear them apart then release them in public, after they find out we are used for nothing. They can’t find a job can’t find a wife they can’t have decent life anymore, they’re gone from good to bad and to worse. Where is the human right? Too sad. We live I’m among hypocrites
