They come in all shapes and sizes: Trams in Melbourne, Australia 2017: Biggest System in the World!

  • The Largest Tram Network in the World - simply put such a diversity of trams and the sheer size is is just breathtaking. Unlike many cities across the world, that where dismantling their networks in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, Melbourne chose not to follow this trend.

    I've lived in Melbourne all my life and use trams for work and leisure, they are just a normal part of our city. Melbourne would be so different if we didnt have trams, lifeless! This footage has been so well filmed showing a lot of variety. I love the tram system we have here, i hope people from all over the world will get a chance to try it sometime!!

    Unusually, Melbourne's tram network runs many routes along the same lines before they diverge later in the network.
    Also there is a law that trams in suburban areas (where there are no platforms) create an instant zebra crossing between it and the nearest footpath whenever they stop. It is illegal to overtake a stopped tram.

      You can pass a stopped Tram if first you come to a complete stop yourself and then you can pass it at walking speed so long as it is safe to do so. Too many morons in Australia.

    1:19 so Melbourne still uses W class trams on their system! There are some in America, but I've never seen any of them in person!
    2:37 I always find it amazing that a city's streetcar or light rail system has intersecting tracks in the middle of the street!
    5:15 aren't those two trams following each other a little too close?
    7:45 That's the lognest 3-piece streetcar I've ever seen! and I thought my local streetcar system (RideKC streetcar) had the biggest 3-piece streetcars!
    8:45 that streetcar looks a lot like most of the modern streetcars in America!
    9:38 that bell is the same bell used on the RideKC streetcar! But this tram is a Bombardier, while the Ride Kc streetcar fleet is all CAF!

    I was born and raised on Melbourne till my mid twenties when I moved to Sydney, and as much as I have grown to appreciate my new city over the years Melbourne will always have a special place in my heart. I still visit family and love going into town. One day I may return. It is also heart warming to read that others love Melbourne too. I remember the difficult years during the late 80s to early 90s the Kirner years when Melbourne got hit with a recession, stocks dropped, the market fell and many people lost their jobs and businesses closed. Melbourne city was a ghost town. It was hard and difficult times. Then the rebuilt came and slowly the city regained itself with the Kennet government and so on, Now it is bustling with people everywhere, it has come a long way.

    The problem with Melbourne trams existing continuously for so long, is that they haven't had a clean sheet to work with. In Manchester U.K. the tram system, while much smaller, is better integrated with the trains and busses. The trams there enter two mainline railway stations and also go to the airport ; all the stops are platformed and therefore much safer.Another interesting thing about Manchester trams is that they are often up to twice the length of those in Melbourne.

      Melbourne has no need for longer trams, if a route becomes popular then they just run more trams. Most lines operate every 5 minutes during peak and 8 minutes during other daylight hours. That means there are trams every 30-120 seconds on the lines in the city.

    • @johngaskell1467
      @johngaskell1467 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to disagree with you but Melbourne does have a few longer trams but I understand that on many of the routes there would be a problem with turns. Melbourne is a nightmare for car drivers with so many individual trams and the notorious Hook Turns. Look on TH-cam for 'Manchester Metrolink New Lines 2012-2017'. I'll be back in Melbourne early in 2018 but while considered a very confident driver will avoid the C.B.D.

    • @johngaskell1467
      @johngaskell1467 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At no time did I state that I found hook turns challenging but referred to drivers in general. I have held a clean driving licence for fifty years and had no problem driving in Melbourne when I was over in Australia on holiday in March of this year. I did however find the general standard of driving in Melbourne to be poor which probably accounts for the number of vehicles I saw with damage.

    • @johngaskell1467
      @johngaskell1467 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kwv4865 I did not say that I personally found Melbourne a nightmare to drive in but was advised of this by a director of a company in Melbourne who is an expert in transportation and infrastructure. I'm going to look up the data on the Melbourne system, I would have thought Boston has more miles of LRT.

    • @ItsAlwaysHappyHour
      @ItsAlwaysHappyHour 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Boston only has a 23 mile (37 km) line length. The 3 largest systems in the US are LA at 83.6 miles (134.5 km), San Fran at 35.7 miles (57.5 km) and then Boston. All three have ridership numbers around 50M passengers per year.
      Compare this to Melbourne though at 155.3 mi (250 km) and >200M passengers. So Melbourne's tramways are longer than the 3 largest US systems combined and transport 50M more passengers per year than the 3 US systems combined.

      At many intersections in the city of Melbourne, drivers are required to do "Hook Turns" wherever tram tracks cross that intersection. This is done so that no trams are held up by cars turning in front of them. The cars wait in the turning lane on the left and turn right after the lights turn red. It's unique but works well.
