Love your videos! I am a local...lived here all my life and I've travelled to the US and other parts of the world. Some clarifications for you to note: 1/ City shopping hours do tend to vary and shops may open longer in the city than in the suburbs (Melbourne has huge ring of suburbs surrounding the city kind of like LA.). In general the hours are as follows: Monday to Wednesday- 8 or 9am until 5.30pm Thursday and Friday- 8 or 9am until 9pm Most shopping centres (malls) will keep to these hours but small strip shops may choose to close earlier. Saturday- 9am until 5pm Sunday-10am until 5pm There are exceptions in the CBD and the very large shopping centres may stay open a little longer...especially in summer. Supermarkets run 8am until midnight...there are some 24/7 supermarkets in the suburbs. Some department stores like Kmart (yes, we have them but they are not the same company as US Kmarts) will open 8am until 10pm every day in the suburbs with the iconic first-ever Aussie Kmart in Burwood (suburb) open 24/7. The big hardware chain here (Bunnings) opens until the early evening but each store may have different hours. 2/ Driving: STICK TO THE SPEED LIMITS! The traffic camera network here is huge. They have red light cameras, combined red light and speed cameras, speed cameras and point to point (distance~speed over time) cameras (on some freeways). There are even clandestine mobile speed cameras placed in ordinary looking late model cars which park on roadsides to catch drivers out. The tolerance for being overspeed is 3km/h ...that's about the width of your speedometer needle. You have to drive with one eye on your speedometer and one eye on the traffic. The authorities say it is to promote safety BUT we all know it generates a lot of revenue so, really, it is a voluntary tax...speed and you'll pay for it. Most locals are now used to it but visitors can find it hard. Speed limits (and signs) are in km/h, not MPH...so be careful. The lowest speed limit is 30km/h (rare...more often 40) and the highest speed allowed on SOME freeways is 110km/h. Signage is pretty good...some areas have electronically variable signs...keep your eyes peeled. School zones have variable speed limits around them and these are strictly enforced. If you get a ticket don't think you can fly home and ignore it. The traffic office will bill the hire care company and they will take the fine out of your credit card...sadly. 3/ People are friendly to tourists...most people will help you out if you are lost. Service stations will have a traffic map book (called a "Melways" after the publisher's name) that you can have a quick look at. At service stations most are self-serve. You pay after filling your tank except late night where some stations will require you to pay first. Police are friendly...they do NOT have their hands on a pistol when approaching your car (very few handguns here). If you are stopped, stay in your car...they will come to you. They will ask for your licence first. If you have an international permit show it to them WITH your home country licence. If you are a tourist and make a silly mistake you will probably find they will tell you what you've done wrong and let you go on your way. This does not apply to being well over the speed limit or DUI. You can be stopped and breath tested/drug tested at any time without due cause...be aware of that. 4/ Is Melbourne safe to walk around? Daytime...most definitely. Night time as well but keep your wits about you. Like any big city we have our share of criminals. 5/ Can you bargain in the shops? Not in department stores or many smaller stores. In electronics/camera retailers most definitely! Finally...the big thing tourists get wrong (which is mentioned in the video) we drive on the same side of the road as in the UK. Many tourists have been caught out by this. Listen to what the car rental company tells you...they will often give you a leaflet explaining the basic rules. When crossing a street look to the RIGHT, then left then right again before crossing. That's about it...enjoy your stay.

So another thing to add.... Melbourne is a nanny state with all of its cameras? That's the whole of Australia. Also ketchup and tomato sauce are different, it's to do with the sweetness of the sauce. I feel standard American coffee consists of franchised Starbucks stores so people may not be familiar with coffee shops that actually care more about the quality.

I have lived in Melbourne for more than 50 years and I think your review was fairly accurate and balanced, just like to make a few small additions. Winter 9 months, NO. it starts to get a little cool from mid May and warms up mid September, mid winter 10 deg C is as cold as it gets daytime. Getting around city, you forgot to mention bicycles. Melbourne is bicycle friendly although you are required to wear a helmet. You mentioned water and beer but forgot wine. Victoria has many great wineries less than 2 hr drive from the CBD, and you can buy many excellent quality wines cheaply. And finally, Speedos are called “Budgie smugglers”.
1. Also the Water in Melbourne tastes exactly like Canadian water so if you live in Canada you will like Melbournes water 2. get a latte if you like coffee. they are the best and every melbournian buys one if they go to a cafe
Also the trains are behind the camera plus for the freight train enthusiast, there's 4 freight trains that run through Flinders and Spencer street (Spencer Street is called Southern Cross) during the day, it's the Long Island steel to Hastings (Saturday to Thursday (it only runs on Fridays when there's works on the Feankston line during the weekend)), the Maryvale Paper train from Morwell (7 days a week), the Dandenong Cement (odd days) and Apex (Hansons Quarry) (alternates between Westall and Brooklyn to Kilmore East)
I would like to add one more thing about how amazing the public toilet facilities across Melbourne, you can find it in the middle of the city or any suburb you go to. I've been to big cities in the USA and Canada, had lot's of problems finding public toilets there, had to use McDonald's :(

Melbourne is Australia's equivalent of Boston, which is funny because they are actually sister cities. In regards to the trams, the other Australian cities had tram networks in the 1950's and decided to get rid of them, but Melbourne kept theirs. Its rather ironic that those cities that took them away now are putting them back.
As a Melbournian I would suggest visiting in January, the Australian Open is an amazing way to experience the city. There are so many free events and pop ups. We are known for hosting amazing sports & music events! If you have access to a car you should visit the Mornington Peninsula Hot Springs, Daylesford, Rosebud and Bendigo.
To add Queen Vic market is also open nights, generally Wednesdays but many more nights through the summer months, great place to try out all sorts of foods, viet, indian, italian, ukranian, aussie, sweet, savoury and everything in between... But it fills up quick and youll be waiting quite a while for food from 730-9 so make sure to scope it out early if you're hungry to try a few different things. If you enjoy you're drinking you're in luck with melbourne, do the tram bar crawl, start at one end of the city at a bar and have a drink, then get on a tram and make your way down the line :) And you're right about coffee here :) Plenty of cafes and coffee shops in alley ways that have some amazing coffees
I grew up living in Melbourne and you have done an excellent job reviewing. I now live in a tacky place called the Gold Coast. If you ever return you should visit.
Great review.. I'd say Melbourne generally has decent/warm weather for half the of the year (mid Oct to mid April) and cold weather the other half... It still doesn't get anywhere near as chilly as cities such as London, Chicago or Toronto thou.

I lived in Melbourne for 5 years but aside from pronunciation most of this is accurate. The only thing that stood out to me is that most stores in my experience opened at 8am or 9am. Not 10am that would be quite late for a store to open. Everything else seems spot on though.

i feel like i'm visiting california not australia lol, but seriously nice job thanks. no reason to drive in the city and worry about hook turns, but i may take a train out to warrnambool and rent a car there for the twelve apostles great ocean drive and hiking. the other side of the road thing and opposite way roundabouts are a bit of a worry, but i will try not to aggravate people out there lol. the weather tip was especially helpful.
Really enjoyed this video but the trains are down A LOT in Melbourne and are always delayed on weekdays but usually tourists come on weekends so it’s not really a problem for tourists. Also spot on with the weather that’s why we say “4 season 1 day” because it’s raining for 5 minutes and then sunny and warm after. It’s crazy.
Melbourne trains at the moment are a pain in the arse because of the major works they're doing in the CBD and the works to remove train crossings in the outer suburbs which will continue all of 2018. Best tip is to download the metro/metlink app (its free) and gives live updates for all delays and works. Also for travelers most trains going around the CBD and towards any of the south-east outer suburbs will be abserlutely packed to the brim between 6am-8:30am/3pm-7pm :) loved hearing about Melbourne from a tourist perspective!

Adelaide was definitely quaint and quiet :). I liked the city center with the university, river, and shopping streets. I didn't like that all the stores closed at 5pm on Sunday including grocery stores. The airport was good and super close to the city which was nice.
The only con about coming into Melbourne by plane is the only way to get into the city is by taxi, uber or the public shuttle bus Both Sydney and Brisbane have a train direct from the airport into the city but Melbourne i dont know if they ever will build a train network from the airport to the city
If you like burgers try and visit a place called Soda Rock in Prahan, I also think you would like Tasmania, best seafood in Australia, need to try a scallop pie, keep up the good work

Melbourne is Australia's equivalent of Boston, which is funny because they are actually sister cities.
In regards to the trams, the other Australian cities had tram networks in the 1950's and decided to get rid of them, but Melbourne kept theirs. Its rather ironic that those cities that took them away now are putting them back.

But nowhere near on the scale of Melbourne and probably never will be considering how much one little line seems to cost.

As a Melbournian I would suggest visiting in January, the Australian Open is an amazing way to experience the city. There are so many free events and pop ups. We are known for hosting amazing sports & music events! If you have access to a car you should visit the Mornington Peninsula Hot Springs, Daylesford, Rosebud and Bendigo.

To add Queen Vic market is also open nights, generally Wednesdays but many more nights through the summer months, great place to try out all sorts of foods, viet, indian, italian, ukranian, aussie, sweet, savoury and everything in between... But it fills up quick and youll be waiting quite a while for food from 730-9 so make sure to scope it out early if you're hungry to try a few different things.
If you enjoy you're drinking you're in luck with melbourne, do the tram bar crawl, start at one end of the city at a bar and have a drink, then get on a tram and make your way down the line :)
And you're right about coffee here :) Plenty of cafes and coffee shops in alley ways that have some amazing coffees

Great review.. I'd say Melbourne generally has decent/warm weather for half the of the year (mid Oct to mid April) and cold weather the other half... It still doesn't get anywhere near as chilly as cities such as London, Chicago or Toronto thou.

I lived in Melbourne for 5 years but aside from pronunciation most of this is accurate. The only thing that stood out to me is that most stores in my experience opened at 8am or 9am. Not 10am that would be quite late for a store to open. Everything else seems spot on though.

Victoria (the state the Melbourne is in) also has aldi as another major supermarket :) but coles and woolworths (for short woolies) are our two most known supermarkets :)

for foreigner tourist first time visit Melbourne, u must buy Micky card is useful for public transportation; MRT, Tram to explore every tourist attraction, the best stay in downtown
In Queensland and New South Wales the beer sizes are midi= small and schooner= large. :)
i feel like i'm visiting california not australia lol, but seriously nice job thanks. no reason to drive in the city and worry about hook turns, but i may take a train out to warrnambool and rent a car there for the twelve apostles great ocean drive and hiking. the other side of the road thing and opposite way roundabouts are a bit of a worry, but i will try not to aggravate people out there lol. the weather tip was especially helpful.
Really enjoyed this video but the trains are down A LOT in Melbourne and are always delayed on weekdays but usually tourists come on weekends so it’s not really a problem for tourists. Also spot on with the weather that’s why we say “4 season 1 day” because it’s raining for 5 minutes and then sunny and warm after. It’s crazy.

Melbourne trains at the moment are a pain in the arse because of the major works they're doing in the CBD and the works to remove train crossings in the outer suburbs which will continue all of 2018. Best tip is to download the metro/metlink app (its free) and gives live updates for all delays and works. Also for travelers most trains going around the CBD and towards any of the south-east outer suburbs will be abserlutely packed to the brim between 6am-8:30am/3pm-7pm :) loved hearing about Melbourne from a tourist perspective!

What did you think of Adelaide? I live here and I consider it pretty quaint, compared to the chaos of New York. The airport is good as well.
Adelaide was definitely quaint and quiet :). I liked the city center with the university, river, and shopping streets. I didn't like that all the stores closed at 5pm on Sunday including grocery stores. The airport was good and super close to the city which was nice.
The aus dollar to the us dollar is now sitting at around 66 cents. We don't have a very good exchange rate at all at the moment
It's basically like the San Fran/Portland of Australia!
The only con about coming into Melbourne by plane is the only way to get into the city is by taxi, uber or the public shuttle bus
Both Sydney and Brisbane have a train direct from the airport into the city but Melbourne i dont know if they ever will build a train network from the airport to the city
