How to get the best of it all? One must conquer, achieve, get to the top; one must know the end to be convinced that one can win the end - to know there's no dream that mustn't be dared. . . Is this the summit, crowning the day? How cool and quiet! We're not exultant; but delighted, joyful; soberly astonished. . . Have we vanquished an enemy? None but ourselves. Have we gained success? That word means nothing here. Have we won a kingdom? No. . . and yes. We have achieved an ultimate satisfaction. . . fulfilled a destiny. . . To struggle and to understand - never this last without the other; such is the law. . . George Mallory :)
God I cry every single time I hear this song. These precious letters turned into a beautiful tribute. I can just see George standing up on that summit, seeing heaven and him thinking of his beloved Ruth! I feel as though I'm with George and Sandy climbing that mountain with all the strength they had left. Thanks for this beautiful song! Malory is at peace now. I can only pray that one day at least in my lifetime that Sandy is found and body still intact like George is. I have thought for ages on what might have happened that day. I know in my heart that they made the summit. I can only hope that they didn't suffer. Sandy we still have hope. Rip my heroes ❤
After watching the docufilm I truly believe that Mallory made the summit. And to my grave I will take that belief. The docufilm is brilliant, the soundtrack is beautiful but the story breaks your heart.
The documentary really wasn't really that accurate. But if you should take a interest there is many, many wonderful information from mountaineers who have went over all of the clues, have went through the 1924 Everest expedition report and diary from Norton, and Mallory as well of John Noel. It shows that Mallory knew he couldn't take the ridge route. It also shows the results of Mallory watch it was annualized by a expert watch maker. There expert opinion is the watch stopped at 127 am they think he died at after midnight and as his body cooled cause the watch to freeze. Many wonderful details about Mallory and Sandy. I believe they made it but it was getting dark reason of falling.
I think he made it to the summit. And he and Irvine lost their lives descending the summit. I love this musical tribute to the love story. Poor Ruth. ❤
Amazing song and an amazing story about two amazing men, Mallory and Irvine. Hillary may have been the first to definitely make the summit, but his route was an easier one with 30 more years in which to get it right. Even if Mallory & Irvine didn't make it, it's a fact that they at least got damned close, and with antiquated equipment. They had balls of steel.
I think it would be amazing to one day find the proof that he had. Just getting there, finding a route (which is still the most used route today), and getting as far as we definitely know they did with equipment you wouldn't go up a high hill with these days was an unbelievable achievement in itself. But to know that he actually made it to the top would be the icing on the cake
i thought the programme and the whole story is amazing. the narration, music, re-enactment. all top notch. the story itself amazing... my heart says he climbed it and that will do for me.
His Body was found by other climbers and he was buried, they prayed and said some words over him. He was treated with respectful reverence and dignity.
@mshanks4 That's not entirely accurate. Sandy Irvine's body has never been found and no-one knows if Mallory actually summited as the clouds came in and covered them from view from the team at advance base camp. I would like to think that he did manage to summit but there is no way of knowing for sure. Mallory's body was found in 1999, with the photograph of his wife that he promised to leave on the summit missing, sparking speculation that he was in fact the first man to summit Everest.
Respect for British people, but some italians were reckless explorers too. Colombo, Caboto, Vespucci, Polo, Belzoni, the airship 'Italia''s tragedy, ... the first men on K2 top were italians.
Has anyone else noticed that ALL the GREATEST Adventurers, Travellers and Explorers were/are....BRITISH.....Its in our history, culture, blood and the very sinue that makes us !!
not all of them were british, the Portuguese were great explorers, Rauld Aumundson was Norwegian. He was the first to navigate the northwest passage and beat Scott to the south pole. Although scoot took the credit we all know who really did it though.
Looking at all the evidence i take the opinion that he made it....It does'nt really matter though! He was a pioneer laying a marker down for others to follow. That's what makes him special in my book.
The traverse between the first and second step would have been tough with no safety ropes. Imagine what was going through his mind when he went for the 2nd step with no ropes. If he made it then he could not have come back down the same way. Certain death! It was his 3rd and last attempt so i reckon he went for it.
@@tommypetraglia4688 This was his third attempt , he would have known what obstacles he was facing and how to go around them , his clothes didn't hinder him twice before and he would have known how cold it was up there .
it has been said in many articles that i have read that scott "took the credit" I am repeating what I have read. not making a self concluded statemt. Just saying dude. read it for yourself
Lisabeth Scott, lovely actress and singer.
The history books will show that Hilary was the first to conquer Everest but our heart's will always know it was Mallory.
Hillary Clinton?
Ian Grubb And Irvine.......
Ian Grubb what the hell are you talking about????
Jennifer Bahnsen sorry misread your reply!!!! Didn't mean to cause offence. Aye Irvine as well,

Hilary went up a completely differnt route!
I do however think Mallory was the first to summit!
@@donuttime2507 I agree.
Truly amazing people. A moving film indeed. I for one would like to think that they made it

I hope Mallory and Irvine got to the top of Everest.
His Body was found by other climbers and he was buried, they prayed and said some words over him. He was treated with respectful reverence and dignity.
Which is the way he should have been
Yes, the lyrics are from letters written between George & Ruth
Обожаю эту историю.

I think Mallory was first to summit however you cant expect a photo to still be at the top all those years later? Get real!

When I get to heaven first thing I’m gonna ask George and Andrew....”guys I gotta know, did you make it?”
It will be my second thing, find my mother will be the first.
and u will feel the end of me
Why climb a mountain ?
Because it's there.
