    In the UK our sewage system was mostly built during the Industrial Revolution, designed so that the same pipes that sewage is transported through also collect drained rainwater, limiting capacity during periods with heavy downpours. So "excessive bad weather" is a contributing factor to more sewage discharges. Gutless and financially gutted oversight bodies are another. This legitimate contributing factor doesn't diminish the water companies' and gov requirements to invest/repair/maintain our antiquated waste systems.

      bit they had the pipework directly from the factories layed out ready? that doesnt add up.
      someone gave them permission to run pipes into rivers. who and why?

    • @ScotSteam47
      @ScotSteam47 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@luminousfractal420 we have this issue in Leith. The issue is when there's a LOT of rain water it carries over to the sewage pipes, this mixes and takes sewage into the river. I'm sure some old piping will deliver sewage to some river somewhere but for most places its the rain that then discharges sewage into rivers.

    • @sandyellis28
      @sandyellis28 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If our pipework has been same for over 100 years then why is the sewage situ worse now? And surely when sector was privatised in 1980s, the Govt would have specified investment works required to upgrade Victorian pipework etc.?
      Stan Johnson actually warned during Remain campaign that our water quality would decline drastically with Brexit. Think it was about EU standards & treatment etc.

    Ava is really naive with regards to the Tories intentions, saying "no one comes into politics to make things worse".
    Plenty of them knowingly make decisions and policies that are objectively bad for the average person and make the country as a whole worse because either they themselves or interested parties will benefit from those actions, either financially or in power.
    These people either are or intend to be rich and as such, they are shielded from the negative results of those actions so they can still benefit from it even if it has hurt the country overall.
    They may very well be incompetent too but you in no way dismiss the intentional malice or indifference involved in these people's decision making.

    Wow, what a remarkable day for the Conservative Party and an even more remarkable one for Britain -said no one ever. His elevation to deputy chair is a bold reminder that when it comes to embracing diversity, some prefer to keep it as an abstract concept, rather like unicorns or affordable healthcare. Here's to forward-thinking, as long as 'forward' is a euphemism for looking resolutely backward. Cheers to your new position; may it bring the enlightenment of a candle in a coal mine.

    So much livestock shit ends up in our rivers too, it's disgusting.
    Most farms I see when walking around the country are dumping grounds for waste and most of the fields are biodiversity deserts.
    Farmers being asked to grow some trees on their land is the bare minimum that they should be doing.
    Eva's view of "regenerative farming" is a bit blinkered.

      Honestly, it's dire. I live in rural Dumfries (southern Scotland) which is incredibly hilly so more sheep than houses and the landscape has been r*ped by farming and forestry. The many waterways are full of run-off and the farmers are horrific to their animals. Certain sections in society laud our farmers but they have no clue at how our farms are run. Depressing.

    Ed's Gladiator comment is egregious, if he's referring to the scenes where he's in and out of consciousness and Djimon Honsou's looking after him. The ground isn't green screened - Crowe and the camera are on a fixed platform which is moved, smoothly, giving the effect that he's floating. It's an old technique which looks odd, especially on higher resolution, high frame rate screens, so I imagine appears green screened to modern eyes.

    Wastewater treatment has some redundancy for when theres a surge in volume but if there is too much rain it is common practice to allow overflow into rivers and coasts. The idea is this shouldnt happen that often, but a lot of our water infrastructure is out of date and in need of repairs + we keep getting intense rainfall bursts these past few years. This is a known problen in many cities (e.g., its a political issue in Paris atm given the olympics plan to use the Seine). Aside from the infrastructure stuff there is also illegal dumping of untreated wastewater by water companies and by industry (esp agriculture), which is a regulatory and enforcement issue.

    A side of the untreated wastewater issue i haven't seen mentioned much is the public health issue it poses. We're lucky enough to live in a country that has cut out most diseases that transmit via oral-fecal routes, due to our water management infrastructure, so maybe we're not as conscious of how bad these can be. These diseases are often debilitating and highly transmissable. Theres a reason W.A.S.H. is a key WHO programme and SDG. Proper wastewater treatment is probably the most effective public health measure we have and we're fucking it up

    The idea of regenerative farming, with cows frolicking in the fields and so on, is not remotely true for the UK, nor could it be a reality if anyone but the very select few want to continue eating animals. Farmers who say the cows are member of their family, that they have super careful practices, that they make 'fantastic meat', etc. are spinning you a line. They have a significant vested interest after all, and they're also already subsidised out the wazoo.
    The cows all go to the same slaughterhouses, they are all treated to the same inhumane conditions, they all lead short lives (4 month-5 year slaughter, against a 15-20yr lifespan). Humane slaughter and humane pastoral farming are lies.
