Pull Testing Knots versus Crimps on Fishing Wire (Which is Best??)

  • We are using a pull test to pull different size multistrand wire that we use for making fishing rigs. When fishing offshore for fish that have sharp teeth, it's important to use a wire rig so the fish don't cut through your line. There are a couple of ways to tie your hooks onto wire leader. One is to use crimps and the other is to tie knots with the wire.
I'm testing wire in the 45 lb, 60 lb, and 90 lb range that are used for live bait rigs for species like King Mackerel and Wahoo.
The pull test that we do in this video is as follows:
Testing wire tied with a figure 8 knot
Testing wire with crimps using a straight crimping tool
Testing wire with crimps using a toothed crimping tool
Testing the 60 second kingfish knot
Testing how strong barrel swivels are

Great stuff. It's interesting that the fig8 knot doesn't seem to get smaller or squeezed. A very good indication of the wire being held secure.

Interesting video. I hope to purchase a machine like that one day. They can be very expensive.

good video, on 7 strand i think i use a perfection loop knot is what its called and then have a swivel that you can open and close to easily switch out rigs. I wonder how that would hold up gotta be very similar to the figure 8 knot
