My foster mother made this! I was just a tiny thing when I was with her and she use to use hotdogs and would let me help, we had an old hand crank meat grinder and I was allowed to crank it, oh I love her so. You put a smile to my face and a tear down my cheek, we lost her in an accident and I lost contact with him when they put me in another home. She was such a loving Mom. Thank you
Rose! This does my heart good. My two boys were adopted and my youngest had a horrible experience in his foster home. It took years of love and care for him to recover. Bless your foster family for giving you these beautiful memories. I hope your later experience was positive. Love to you, dear!!
@@susanrobinson408 thank you for choosing your boys! I aged out as I was part of a group of 8. The. They didn’t separate families. I had a few good home, they taught me love didn’t come by color or religion, it came from the heart. I had some that were horrific, they also taught things, like how to had emotions, that going into a church doesn’t make you a good person, that you should protect the young in the home regardless of the consequences. They also taught me how not to be. The most important thing I could learn as a child Blessings to you.
I have to say this is the best I have heard all day blessings to you and the wonderful mother who loved you and taught and gave you such fond memories.
Here in West Virginia we call it bologna salad, our family has made it for generations, we love it, it doesn't last long in my house I'm raising a 17 year old bottom less pit grandson, he wears it out! Thank you for sharing.
Yes, my grandmas and my mom made this!! We used to have those old fashioned cast iron grinders that clamped onto the edge of our kitchen table. I loved when mom let me turn the handle. It makes delicious sandwiches!
Thank you for bringing back memories. My dad was a coal miner and mom would make him a bologna salad sandwich for his lunch ever so often. I never thought to use hot dogs, you are right it’s just rolled up bologna. I enjoy your page. Love your Amish bread.
We use to have this a lot when we were in school for packed lunches. Exactly how we made it, except we used Miracle Whip. Makes me want to make some now.
We made this all the time when I was growing up except mom used miracle whip. We called it ham salad but my mom called bologna minced ham so I thought that’s where the name came from. We also made beef salad the same way. I haven’t made it in ages but you have inspired me to make it again. Thanks!
My mom is from central Indiana and she would call that ham salad. She always said ham salad was made with bologna. I love it, but I make bread and butter pickles into relish, and use that. (Ps - I love ham salad with ham, too!)
This was pretty much a staple in my house growing up. With 11 kids, plus the neighborhood friends always hanging out, my mother made it with bologna all the time. This sparked many other childhood memories, so thank you!
Thank you for sharing this Renae, what memories it brings back. I love bologna, I grew up eating it, and still do today. I always say bologna fried is a breakfast food, and cold is a lunch/dinner food 🤗. But I do not believe I have ever had hot dogs done this way.
Your husband is a lucky man. I came looking for bologna, spread and found someone who loves to make amazing food for the person they love. That is awesome. Thank you for this video.
Yes, I ate this as a child (grew up in WI). When I moved to the west coast, the deli's didn't sell this. I have made it with leftover ham. You can freeze it, but the color fades and doesn't look as appetizing, although it tastes just fine. I use your same recipe, although I'll also add a little Miracle Whip too. Thank you for all your hard work and podcasts!!
I absolutely love your videos, but what I love the most is that you remind me so much of my precious Mommy. Your personality, your voice etc. I get teary eyed everytime I see you. Mommy's been gone 24 years now. Miss her so much...
I have my husband's grandmother's old cast-iron c clap meat grinder and my mother in law used to make this! Now I do! My children loved it growing up... we used onion celery and sweet pickles ! They loved making a mess grinding it all up! We also make ham salad the same way! I love it on crackers!!!
Oh My Gosh, I’m a kid again after watching your video Renae! My Grandma would make this out on the farm when I was a kid. (She made hers with ham, onion, mayo, sweet pickle relish and a pinch of black pepper.) She often pulled this together the the day after a holiday, i.e. Christmas or Easter, for luncheon sandwiches since the house was still full of relatives. Such good memories. She passed away last fall and soon after, on a whim, I made a batch. It was such a treat and now my kids love it too. Thank you for sharing your recipe. We’ll give it a try.
Hey there lovely lady we grew up on Friday bologna and ham salad I don't think I've ever had bologna salad but I'm going to try it now thank you so much for sharing God bless you
Renea, been waiting for this ever since you mentioned it.Big bologna/hot dog fan here.Still have my mother’s hand crank grinder and want to try this.Grew up on Miracle Whip and bologna sandwiches! Thanks
My grandmother made this when I was a child and I just made some a few days ago. She didn't put onions in hers. It had sweet relish, eggs, and pimento. And always used salad dressing and not mayonnaise. I've had it both ways. Now I use the salad dressing to remind me of grandma's. So good.
My grandma used to make this and I’ve always made it for our family. Now the grandkids ask me to make it! The only thing I do differently is I add shredded cheese to ours. Love your videos.
We put celery, sweet pepper, a bit of sugar and hard boiled eggs. Never have used hot dogs but have used a a mix of ham and lunch meat. Grandma Sue in central Indiana
We love this, and have made it for years. We always buy bologna do just like you and add hard boiled eggs to it. With the price of eggs now, will make it using no eggs.😢
I love you! I just started watching your videos and I love them! I watched your hot dog salad video probably 20 times. I live in Ohio and you are as “Northern Midwest” as they get! Best part of the country in my opinion. Your content is therapeutic ❤
Our kids grew up on this, in fact I just made some last week for the guys and it is gone already! They got 16 pkg of baloney and I made half. They eat a lot of it when they are in the fields. Love your channel
I make it through the summer . I use garlic bologna, add little touch of mustard and some ranch dressing with the mayo .relish and eggs and shredded cheese ... Lol I go extra
My Mom always made us raw hotdog and dill pickle sandwiches for picnics and partys, She would grind up the meat and then the pickles and then mix with some mayonaise and put on bread. Have been eating this all my life, I am now in my sixties. Just use some dill spears for chopping, I have used the big jar of whole pickles which work but leave the spread a little too juicy and you have to strain it. You want it to be moist, but not too soupy. This is one of our familys favorite sandwhiches. I am in love with your meat grinder where did you find it! Thanks again for another great video!
We used to make this when I was growing up. It may have just been a way to make us eat more vegetables, but my mother used onions, celery and carrots. The ground carrots gave it a little extra texture and crunch. But we didn’t use pickles.
I had forgotten abut this. My youngest son(22yr old) was watching and said we have to try this. He loves baloney and hotdogs so I know he will like this. We make our own chicken and ham sandwich spread too.
My ex-MIL used to make this but she would use gherkins and a small block of velveeta cheese..no pepper and Miracle Whip instead of mayo!! My kids all love it and so does my current hubby!!!
Because of my arthritis, my pepper grinder of choice is a ratchet grinder. LOVE them! They grind much faster than any other grinder and I’ve tried them all. Don’t waste your money on a battery grinder, they’re so slow! I have all my spices in ratchet grinders now.
I’m not crazy about the quality of bologna that’s available in my area. It’s almost watery. I never thought about using hot dogs! Great idea. I’m going to try it. BTW, love your channel, and you authenticity.❤
Hi Renea!!! I have never had this. My Brother-in-Law lived with us for 11 years. He has CP. He like ground ham and we always bought it for him. I never tasted it. I asked my Sisters for a meat grinder for Christmas. Hope it's not difficult to use. I want to grind up chicken. Can you do a video of gringing up chicken please???The hot dogs ground up look good . Looks like what we use to buy. Bet it is good on crackers... Nice pepper grinder... & apron.Great video!!!...
Hey Renee, I remember this stuff as a kid too. But I still like it as a grown up. LOL. Do you remember the Underwood deviled ham? I make that with the hams that are in the can. It is so good and I put the ground ham in packages and freeze it. So then I add the Mayo relish when I want to make some. It's great. Thanks for sharing this old remembered recipe . Take care stay safe and God bless.🌼💜⚘👍

She often put hard cooked eggs in it, too. Also, I been searching for a canister set like yours!! I hope to find one someday.
Hi Renea. I have to try this. I’m a dill relish eater not fond of the sweet but it looks good. I haven’t had a fried Bologna sandwich in years, sounds good. God Bless ❤️
It reminds me of potted meat minus the onions, relish and mayo. I don't generally care for organ meat but can handle it in hotdogs. Definitely going to give this a try. Thanks for the video.
In our town it was used all the time at funerals, so it was called “funeral meat”! My sister-in-law and I have an agreement that whoever goes first will make it in honor of the other one for her funeral!
It is just a baby grinder. I have a huge industrial one as well that can grind 50 lbs plus. I dont know the brand of the small one but my large one is a Cabelas
Listeria Risk… Actually, it's important to always reheat hot dogs until they're steaming hot. Some ready-to-eat foods, such as hot dogs, can become contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes after they have been processed and packaged at the plant.

So, using hotdogs does it taste the same as bologna? I used to help my mother make bologna spread as a little girl. My great grandmother ate Ham spread every day for lunch with a cup of Sanka! Oh the memories!! 👩🍳

Taught my daughter in law how to make this. The entire family loved it. My mom added boiled eggs to ours and used bologna rather than hot dogs.
We use to have this a lot when we were in school for packed lunches. Exactly how we made it, except we used Miracle Whip. Makes me want to make some now.
A memory from my Midwest childhood. We called it “ham” salad even though it was made with bologna and never ham (we could not afford ham).
I have a friend that used spam and the same ingredients plus a chunk of Velveeta cheese...it was so good.
I grew up on this. My Mom would use Miracle Whip and added chopped egg. So yummy

My mom use to buy square bologna with the red casing and we would have fried bologna with mashed potatoes for supper!

We had 2 dogs once and bologna was what they eat 24/7.

You'd be surprised how popular "Ham Spread" is at the deli. I've seen it! And this Olive Loaf of pickle loaf. The Greatest Generation!

As I was watching this I wondered about putting boiled eggs in it. Did you like it with the eggs?
@@shodson314 Yes, we liked it both ways. I think mom just put them in when she had extra eggs!🤣
@@susanrobinson408 LOL that is why I was thinking about it...I am currently over run with eggs!
Hotdogs are fully cooked. I have never tried eggs in it. I just make my grandma's recipe.

I grew up on bologna salad
My mouth is watering! 😋
Could onion powder replace the onions? Gives the flavor but not the negative results of onion???
Just thinking outloud!!! 🤔
Love this!!!!
Great video... I love the stuff... Love your grinder, doesn't look very heavy, what kind is it...
Thanks for sharing.

So, using hotdogs does it taste the same as bologna? I used to help my mother make bologna spread as a little girl. My great grandmother ate Ham spread every day for lunch with a cup of Sanka! Oh the memories!! 👩🍳
Absolutely taste the same.
One of the TH-camrs I watch grinds her whole peppercorns in a heavy-duty blender and keeps it in a container by the stove.
I never measure either; makes it tough when someone wants a recipe lol
Did you make your apron? I love it. Is there a pattern?
I got it thru Amazon.
I’ve been eating ground bologna all my life….76 years old
I'm gonna try this to make homemade potted meat since I don't eat pork and you can never find potted meat in the store that doesn't have pork in it
I use Krey bologna
All that this is missing is some cheese in that! Preferably cheddar!
@Dr. Christopher Johnson QUIT TROLLING!!
THIS IS NOT A DATING APP!
I make left over ham spread
Renee, could I do this with my food processor or do you think it would be too mushy?
I am not sure I never used a processor for it. Maybe just pulse it.
We put boiled eggs and cheese it all so
