  • On this Aotearoa New Zealand history tour we are exploring Te Tii Waitangi Marae. Te Tii Waitangi Marae is located north of the township of Paihia, directly next to the mouth of the Waitangi River, and below the Waitangi Treaty grounds.
Even before the opening of the building on site in 1881, the area was home to a Nikau building and the first parliament of the tribes of Ngapuhi.
The Wharenui, named Te Tiriti O Waitangi replaced the 1881 building in 1922.
It is adjacent to the site where the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand was signed, on October 28, 1835.
ðŸ”ī In this video series looking at the Aotearoa New Zealand History , we aim to present the places as they are . We understand that it is not possible to tell the many complex stories of a location with one video, rather we want to make these places available to be visited virtually.
ðŸ”ī For more information about this site, we have collected some resources which can be used to understand more context -
