I was a casual fan, my fiancée a fanatic! It was always easy getting her gifts. It just had to be Sailor Moon! We spent the last days of her life at the hospital watching Sailor Moon. After her passing, I got a tattoo of Luna, her favorite character, with “Love, Erin” in her handwriting underneath as a memorial.

Sailor moon gave me the love, hope, and inspiration to be the person I am today. I did not give up and commit suicide, I did not give in to negative forces, and I never give up on others. Her hope and persistence in caring about others aligns with my heart in ways that no one could ever take away from me. In the name of the moon, I will never give up!! 💕 thank you Naoko Takeuchi

Hey Dan as a huge SM fan, just wanted to add something I saw missed in the video. Sailor Uranus and Neptune were in seasons 3-5 so it was not DiC that censored them into cousins it was Cloverway. However DiC did censor a gay relationship in season one by changing the male character Zoisite into a female character. Love the videos!

Here in Poland, Sailor Moon was known as "Sorceress from the Moon" ("Czarodziejka z Księżyca") and it was huge. I was big fan of it. I watched all 200 episodes. I had 19 years and I wrote to my teacher I can not to come to the morning lessons beacuse I have to watch the show i missed yeasterday. Teachar said it was the fair reason and left me free. Hahaha something similar happened to me in Malaysia. Back then anime that was aired were exclusively the dubbed versions, either in English or Mandarin with Malay subs. It normally aired on the weekends back to back with Dragonball, and everyone was happy in this arrangement... until the major network decided to change the airing time to Friday evening. The problem with that is many kids attended religious classes after the normal primary school hours, and we couldn't watch Sailor Moon anymore. I noticed that truancy picked up as well. Then the network switched the airing back to weekends and everything was okay again 😂

Because of how the internet was becoming a thing when this aired, this was one of the first anime where a good portion of the US viewers were aware of just how much it was edited and censored as we were watching it for the first time and, while the practice of excessively "adapting" anime for western television audiences never entirely went away, I think this changed the game and ensured that something on the level of Macross/Robotech wouldn't really fly anymore. Still, as altered as it was, we ate it up because Sailormoon and DBZ were just about it for anime on TV at the time (except for the occasional treats like the Sci-Fi channel's Anime Week).

Another thing I think they should’ve kept the Japanese names so the kids could pronounce it because if you hear the pronunciation they weren’t too hard for children to pronounce them in their native tongue. So I think America kind of messed that up now it’s a little hard for me to get my head to work with saying her Japanese name and that’s the 90s kids and me that’s struggling till this day. But I still love sailor moon regardless of the voice actor change, I watch the live action and it was cringe but I still loved it either way.

  • @citrinedragonfly

It may be defunct, but the DiC dub is how a lot of people my age got into Sailor Moon. While it is very cringe today, if it weren't for "Serena" and "Molly" and all of the DiC-ified characters, I wouldn't have gotten into the fandom, learned all the Japanese things that had been cut or changed (Zoisite ISN'T a woman?!), or been willing to rent a laserdisc player to watch the unsubtitled laserdiscs I could rent from a niche comic shop near where I lived. Sailor Moon was my gateway anime, and remains one of my favorites to this day - especially because of the life it took on outside of the anime and manga. The musicals are some of my favorite things, and I forked out the cash to see Sailor Moon Live when it came to DC pre-COVID. That is one of the best experiences ever for me!

Yeah it always blows my mind how the adult stuff actually got a lot more traction in the late mid to late 90s then any other time I can remember or have heard about historically. Then again thanks to things like toonami the whole industry was changing. Cable made anime much more viable and then it had been on network. And as iconic as Sailor Moon is now it flopped pretty bad on network TV. And considering how they scheduled it yeah I'm not surprised.

Jadeite, Neflite, Zoicite and Kunsite, or the 4 Heavenly Kings, are all male because they were originally Prince Endymion's guard, just like the inner senshi are to Princess Serenity, who just like the Prince and princess, were all Lovers, Jadeite with Mars, Neflite with Mercury, Zoicite with Jupiter and Kunsite with Venus. There's actually an official art poster of them together

    • @citrinedragonfly
      @citrinedragonfly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@The_Borderline_Otaku_Guy Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite are indeed Endymion's guards in the manga - he even has the crystals of their essences (I love that Naoko named nearly all her villains after minerals, gems, crystals, and metals) that he consults at times. In the '92 anime, this was not the case. There are hints of it in one episode where Mamoru and Nephrite - as Sanjouin Masato - have a momentary recognition, but that could also just be a flash of memory from battling recently. Zoisite and Kunzite were portrayed as in a romantic relationship in the '92 anime, with Zoisite being the more 'feminine' partner - hence how much easier it was for DiC to change his gender for the dub and not have it seem at odds with the art. The original art poster that shows the senshi and the shitennou together was originally just that - a poster showing a what-if. The pairings (Jadeite/Mars, Nephrite/Jupiter, Zoisite/Mercury, Kunzite/Venus) weren't made anime canon until Crystal back in 2015. The SeraMyu from the 90s follow these pairings, however, beginning with the very first Myu, which sees the return of Beryl and the shitennou after their supposed defeat at the end of the first series. Minako meets a boy named "Saito-kun", and he introduces the other girls to his three friends, the group goes to a carnival/amusement park, and Usagi feels left out, because she does not remember Mamoru as her boyfriend (the girls lost their memories when reborn, just like at the start of R in the anime). Though in the Myu, Nephrite blames Naru for his death last time around, because his weakness for her is what got him killed by Zoisite (ew, but given how Beryl revived them, it makes sense in the story). At the end, both Beryl and the Shitennou are destroyed again by the senshi.
Personally, I prefer the '92 interpretation, because it gives Beryl's henchmen/generals a life beyond the Earth Kingdom, and it was one of the early semi-positive portrayals of a gay couple people were exposed to. Yes, they were villains, but that even villains could have love and relationships, grieve, and (in the case of Kunzite/Malachite) be so completely devastated by the death of their partner and the lack of ability to mourn properly that they became irrational was groundbreaking. Things that people in real life dealt with and had to hide being shown on a "cartoon" of all things was impressive to an American teenager who was just starting to question her own sexuality, and had no real representation on television.

Two minor corrections: Uranus and Neptune didn't debut until the third series, which means their "cousin" status was Cloverway's decision, not DIC's. Also, the Viz unedited release was preceded by a box set of the first two seasons subtitled by AD Vision, though the quality of the masters used was notoriously lacking.

Between Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, they really exemplified the evolution of anime in the US.
Both started out as heavily censored anime hiding things be it blood, villain genders, or the concept of death itself.
Both got their start in syndication, then their second arc's productions get cut off midseason for no reason which makes sense.
Then Toonami essentially is the springboard to bring them both back.
Both encountered "unique" initial dubs and now have dubs closer to the original.
And both series are still going strong decades later with Sailor Moon Eternal and Dragon Ball Super!

Sailor Moon is similar and connected to another 1970's Manga/Anime creation, that being the lesser known "Cutie Honey" series. Both series have a female protagonist who can "magically" change in order to fight horrific enemy monsters. In fact, the 1990's "Cutie Honey" series, "Cutie Honey Flash" employed many of the same artists/animators who had also worked on "Sailor Moon;" one of the most obvious similarities is the transformation sequences of Cutie Honey and of Sailor Moon.

In latin America it aired ALMOST without any kind of censorship, keeping the blood, the "nudity" and Uranus and Neptune relationship and it was a crazy hit. The ALMOST is because they made the villain Zoicite a woman (just by making him being dubbed by a woman) because of his romance with another male villain, and they made the same thing later with the flamboyant male-crazy Fish Eye on Sailor Moon SuperS.

I first caught the DIC dub on one of the Canadian channels I could tune into during my sojourn in the frozen north. Yes, a straight white American male, watching a show targeted for girls - and I wasn't the only one. Sailor Moon scratched an itch my fellows and I developed after discovering Ronin Warriors, and persisted after that show was cancelled and replaced with Rush Limbaugh. Because it aired a couple hours after school actually started, we found it while on break, and developed a carefully crafted system of playing hooky and recording episodes on VHS, exchanging these tapes so our whole crew could copy them and watch the full series. This eventually led to our meeting of a military brat who had AN ENTIRE BEDROOM full of bootleg VHS anime he'd brought home from Japan... And thus, my otaku journey began in earnest. Were it not for five pretty soldiers fighting evil by moonlight, the life I know now would probably never have happened. So, thank you DIC, Canada, and all my friends back in Stanwood. Thank you Japan, and all you creators and producers who worked so hard to bring us this wonderful series. And thank you, Toy Galaxy, for letting us relive some beautiful memories. See you at the con. 🌙😎🌙

Haven't watched the video yet. But just read a great piece that covered the attempted US remake and Team Angel. Really fascinating stuff.
That being said, Sailor Moon will always remind me of middle school. I know the original US dubbing and editing is widely hated. But it's what got me through those mornings not really wanting to go to school. I don't really remember how the show was broadcast seasons wise. I remember S2 airing in some form. But I never got pass the first part of that season as I think I started to realize alot of the episodes were filler. Recently watched Crystal and it was a better paced viewing experience. It was also nice to finally finish the story
One last thing. I know the popular view is that the show was most popular with girls and I don't doubt that. But I remember alot of my buddies watching it as well. So it has it's fair share of boy viewers.

(11:29) Little known fact: General Mills offered to sponsor Sailor Moon when the show started out in syndication, but DiC said, "No thanks!" A decision DiC would regret in late 1995 when they couldn't find their target audience and pulled the plug as a result. (13:41) Loyal fans were so devastated, they wrote letters to local TV stations to resurrect SM. (14:20) DiC brought back the show on one condition: they had to let General Mills distribute the show. -"Give Me The Strength to Carry On" I prefer in the battle with Fused Beryl than just re-using the main theme.
-"Rainy Day Man" was a way to get a filler ep something memorable
-"She's Got The Power"...it's Stan "The Touch" Bush, come on.
