Despite the star power of Marvel's Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy, Furiosa flopped, opening withing striking distance of Garfield. Many are upset with that, yet as we will see in this postmortem, the audience rejecting this movie should come as no surprise to no one, not with the movie adhering to Kathleen Kennedy school of girlboss filmmaking ...

A movie prequel to a movie that didn't make any money also doesn't make any money isn't a huge surprise really.
Watch the Incredibles 2 again and you will see disgustingly overt messaging.
It’s bad, bad levels. So yeah the hidden nature from the early days wasn’t as obvious then as it is now.
The reason movies are flopping isn't because of the movies...it's the theatres, costs too much money to go to the movies, costs even more money to get popcorn and a drink ..... if you have kids you have no chance of going out for the afternoon at a reasonable price
1:16-----2:13
@@Designsecrets not sure you realize this but theaters only make 10 cents on every dollar for a theater ticket. So a $14 ticket only nets them $1.40 for the ticket. (Its a sliding scale over the weeks that a film is out, but even then Hollywood screws theaters now because a movie can stream after only 19 days after release in theater which often starts its count on a Thursday night before release). Traditionally this is why theaters have you pay a huge mark up for drinks and popcorn ect.
Hollywoods greed is why you are paying so much. A theater meanwhile has all the costs of a location, including power, water, lease of the building, employees and food, drink ect.
But the theater doesn’t even get much of a say for the product they sell. Shitty movies are out of their control.
So in reality this is 100 percent on Hollywood.
Surprised by a flop? I am only surprised when something Hollywood makes succeeds.
👓 This is the new perspective we should adopt, until further notice.
Ironically, according to many who saw it (including Critical Drinker), Furiosa ain't bad. Furiosa ain't a Mary Sue nor does it seem to push woke. But swapping in a female protagonist in a series named after an iconic male character is a very common setup for wokery. As a result, many Mad Max fans - myself included - didn't bother with Furiosa. Now I'm hearing I missed a pretty good movie being dragged by Hollywood's bullshit.
@@natejennings5884 It's "Not bad" by the very low standards of modern Hollywood. But I don't think it really makes it a good movie either. If anything most movies are so bad these days even the Critical drinker gives it more credit than it really would of gotten in a better age of movies.
It has some cool moments and nice effects at times. I can see watching it once it hits home video/streaming. Zero reason to go out of your way and watch it now for almsot $20 a ticket.
@@natejennings5884 It's very existence is woke i don't give a damn what any of those idiots have to say, they can't be trusted.
I heard Deadpool Wolverine already made 10 million in prerelease ticket sales.
Action movies with a female lead are just a giant red flag these days...Hollyweird has poisened the well
I keep hoping they actually write female characters again. Instead of having female actresses play masculine roles. Don't get me wrong, occasionally having an attractive young actress playing a kick-ass fighter, taking down men twice her size and strength, is fine. But this current wave of she-men characters is getting a little boring, predicable, and tiring. They really must hate women, and all things feminine, because they sure as hell don't like making movies with real, believable, female characters in them.
You can't expect the largest community with they/them pronouns to know how to write strong men and strong women, they can only write toxic people like themselves because you write what you know.
Yea pretty much every action/sci-fi film/show that comes out anymore is a female lead and I just couldn’t care less. Guys just don’t want to see this and don’t feel compelled to pay to see this stuff. It gets proven over and over again.
They always were
@@cmdrfunk tbf, it’s hard to disagree. Ripley, is the exception to the rule, and characters like Sarah Conner or one of my personal favourites, Rita Vrataski (Edge of Tomorrow) aren’t really “lead” characters in their own right
no one went to watch it because Hollywood is now the home of remakes, reboots, prequels, and just utter nonsense.
It looked like a remake with half the budget
So why did Godzilla x Kong make money? lol
@@mikehunt4986 there are the outliers, but I am talking in general.

With cost of living, I can afford 2 movies a year. I choose carefully, everything else I wait for streaming.
I don't care how good movies are these days. I'm happy to build a physical media collection slowly by going to pawn shops and estate sales rather than give the people who hate me in Hollywood even one more penny.

Yup. Physical media is the future
you canalways go back to the classics
I have also dusted my home collection a few years ago and with decades of good cinema, I can go without new films and shows. Even the best films and shows nowadays can barely, if that, stand next to the best ones from 15+ years ago.
It would be nice, but YT is now varied in topics and unlike going to the cinema, it doesn't cost me arm and leg.
Victim complex
I think another reason aswell is everything is so expensive now a days that people cant go see every movie in theaters and simply just wait for it to come out on sreaming
Everyone has their hands in the pie when it comes to making movies and the payoffs have to be made. Compare Godzilla Minus One with Hollywood Godzilla. One was made for $16 millioin and the rest were not. Yet, Godzilla Minus One is the superior product.
Studios can make trash and pursue agenda propaganda while losing money. Why? The Carry Forward IRS tax deduction where losses in one year can be taken as tax deductions over multiple years. As long as studios can make their operating costs? They can lose money elsewhere. While investors who invest in movies and studios can enjoy the tax deductions also. Their investments lose money, in a studio? Those losses offset gains and profits in other investments.
Win-win. Wall Street can't lose for losing money.
Nah , if they produced a really good Mad Max centered movie people would go see it just like they did with Top Gun Maverick. It's because of that god awful CGI and no Max = no fans .
@@beatrizmello8248 yeah thats my point , doesnt seem really worth it to spend money to see it but im sure more people will check it out on streaming
But even with streaming, why would anyone want to waste their time watching poor quality product, period?

Mad Max was never a heavy hitter in the box office. Fury Road made 380 millions on a 180 m budget. That's not impressive at all. Most people streamed it. Making a prequel 10 years later without the titular character of the franchise is crazy. This movie was doomed from the start.
I’m correct. It barely made after costs 52 mil
I actually enjoyed the film, I think both Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne did a great job of making the character likeable and compelling. The main thing about the film I found offputting was that were was so much CGI that it might actually qualify as an animated feature.
I do get the point of view of people that assumed this film would be woke and dismissed it on that grounds. We live in an age now where people have become so pathologically allergic to wokeness that even the slightest impression of it, rightly or wrongly, is enough to turn people off that film.
The CGI is the one thing that took me out of it but it was entertaining and the characters were fleshed out enough for me too. It's a good movie. It's not Dune but it's one of the better movies of 2024 so far.
I enjoyed it. I like Anya Taylor Joy especially in Split. I felt this movie gave her the John McClain treatment where the protagonist gets the shit beat out of them. I honestly enjoyed this movie more than Fury Road because that felt like a bait & switch. Plus I don't really care for Charlize and I much prefer ATJ.
100%. I think everyone complaining didn’t see the movie.
CGI was definitely choppy, that’s a valid complaint.
It was a good film. The people crying are morons
Hollywood: Striking when the iron is ICE COLD.
They're not even striking cold iron. They're striking their own foot, over and over again.
Mr. H said something similar.
Striking at −273.15 °C
Problem is, there is a thing called CHF, or Cold Hammer Forge, where, you guessed it, the steel is struck while cold, do it right, it can make very strong steel, such as CHF barrels. Some of the best, and most expensive AR’s on the market feature very well made CHF barrels! My DDM4V9 and DD MK12 for ex, all have CHF barrels that’ll last over 40,000 rds before needing replacement! So, hammer steel cold IS a thing! HOWEVER… to do that, you need a huge and expensive machine to do that properly….This? This is akin to hammering a cold four ton slab with a tiny hammer using nothing but muscle power while screaming, “Wahhh! Teh Wah-men Pow-wah the awesome” and “wahhhh! Teh patriarchy the evil!”….Good luck with that stuff!
@StryderK I said iron, not steel. Also it's a metaphor.
May be good, may be bad, doesn't matter, the entertainment budget is discretionary and the money is going elsewhere. Hollywood needs to understand they are competing for the entertainment $$ and they are now losing. They still think they are essential, that we care, but we don't.
They compete against gaming, youtube and Tik-Tok. And are in the same spot TV was two decades ago.
People are saying this movie is good, but that doesn't mean we will still support Hollywood. They are done. Finished. Over. One could argue both "Elemental" and "Dungeons and Dragons" were collateral damage movies that didn't deserve to flop, either. Hollywood chose this for themselves after spending years antagonizing and insulting their audiences. They don't get a tenth chance at forgiveness after all of that.

@@MarvinPowell1man shut up the movie is good you no women getting nerds just hate anything with a female lead
Hollywood really has no one to blame but themselves for this. It was a great movie that nobody saw because nobody trusts them with female action leads anymore, studios are demanding larger cuts of ticket prices have caused the price of going to the movies to go up exponentially, and anything that does get released ends up on streaming after 2 to 3 months as opposed to the 6 month window a home release usually had. I hope everyone involved in Furiosa got paid upfront because they deserve it but the box office is sadly unsurprising.

If Furiosa came out 2-3 years after Fury Road WITH Charlieze, there would have been enough good faith to surf on the enthusiasm the public had on the web while the iron was still hot.
Not saying it would have been in the same range as Fury Road, but it would not have been what it's doing now.
Miller should have made Furiosa first
Or, just not put furiosa in a mad max film. And just make two mad max films instead
I don't think so. No one cares about Furiosa.
@@curiositycloset2359this^^^^^^^^^^
No. Fury Road was not a big success and was really just a hit with critics and certain demographics.
9 years ago i left the cinema wondering "i wonder what Max is going to do next", not "i wish the film spent an extra couple hours on Furiosa's backstory".
Furiosa is more of a Skywalker than Ray Palpatine. 😂
I think part of the reason this movie flopped is that any movie that has even a whiff of the "girl boss" trope in it is going to be rejected sight-unseen. Maybe it's not fair, but can you blame fans for being suspicious at this point?
Moreover, if fans were to support a movie with even a whiff of the "girl boss" trope in it Hollywood's confirmation bias would see that as a sign to commission 10 more years of "girl boss" movies before they are even willing to admit it isn't working and begin to change course again.
So I say everyone should keep their collective feet on the gas pedal and not give Hollywood even an inch until the woke mind virus is completely purged, or the Hollywood industry collapses, whichever comes first.
Exactly i mean if they didn't keep pulling the "girl boss" trope, it's not fun, it's just annoying AF to watch. Also a big problem i think here is Hollywood not ever trying to actually make a ORIGINAL Female led Action movie. I mean that is written really well. It's like they just don't have the talent to do it and that's why they keep relying heavily on these beloved "Male led" Franchises, but everyone is just tired of the Female rip-off versions.
I will point out Hollywood has tried to do original action movies with Female leads. Salt with Jolie a few years back, Columbiana with the lovely Zoe Saldana and that one with sexy, hot ScarJo where she's like her mind some MKU thing and i think Morgan Freeman was in it, Even Megan Fox tried to reinvent herself and toughen up doing some Military action movie recently.
trouble is, all these were really quite, dull, bland Vehicle movies for those particular female stars.
I’ll always blame the fans when they bitch and moan about a movie they haven’t seen but judge it like they’re film experts. I saw Furiosa because I love the universe, and I enjoyed the hell out of the movie.
I fully intend to see Furiosa someday. But I WILL NOT GIVE MONEY TO PEOPLE WHO HATE ME. AHHHR!!! It's the HIGH SEAS For me, matey!

For my family, going to the movies has become so cost prohibitive that we rarely go and certainly won't go to anything that has even a whiff of "girl boss" or any other "THE MESSAGE" included.
And that's the reason i didn't go see The Mario Bros. Movie and Japan didn't like it, Peach did the old cliche of putting the hero down, no one would take that without saying anything, even Mario, or, in the words of Spawn: "If you don't like my methods, don't ask for my help"
@@TheSpawnfan
The original plan _was_ to make Peach a huge girl-boss and belittle Mario throughout the movie, cause even in the games, Peach is nothing like her movie counterpart and she's super-girly and traditional. Since Nintendo had a direct say in the movie, they scaled Peach's arrogance way back, but not to the point it was completely cut out of the movie, which is why she still manages to out-do Mario, despite being a regular 4'9" tall human woman with no powers or abilities, who can out-perform Mario on an obstacle course in a dress and heels. In other words, Peach was going to be super-woke and girlbossy before Nintendo told them to un-do it or they'd cancel he movie. And even with all that, she's still obnoxious and unlikeable, cause that simply wasn't actually Peach in the movie. (She was closer to Daisy, if anything; Daisy is meant to be confident, loud, assertive, and athletic.)
@@MarvinPowell1 Even Daisy doesn't go around belittling people, and even then people in Japan didn't like it, Peach being girly doesn't make her any less of a badass, she shows it in her solo game where she gets powers from costumes and fights a witch (then again, so do The MMPR), even without it, Peach fought the forces of Count Bleck and Dimentio alongside Mario, a few people can do that since Dimentio is quite literally a demonic jester.
Right. 2 adult tickets are $53 +tax. Spend that on a steak dinner, 98% chance it will be enjoyable. Spend it on a movie, there's a 4-5% chance, maybe.
Haven't been to a theater for years. Now it cost more for a single ticket, popcorn and drink than the cost of a family years ago? It's easier to wait for the movie to be put on 4k Blu Ray and watch it at home, even if the movie initially costs $25. $53 for two movie goers is insane. What happened to those cheap budget blockbuster movies that everyone loved? The entertainment industry has lost its way.
I had no desire to watch this movie, who wants to watch a movie with Mad Max in the title when it doesn’t even star Mad Max? 🤔
A whole lot of commenters on youtube, most of them paid I suspect, are saying "Furiosa isn't a girlboss! She occasionally loses a fight! She has characterization!" which completely misses the point. She IS a female action hero swapped in the place of a male one, and she IS a woman acting like a man in every way. She is a girlboss even if they toned it down this time and she isn't a Mary Sue like Rey. Jesus, in the first Furiosa movie which had Mad Max in it, she beat Max in a fight. Ridiculous. We don't want this shit anymore.
Um… when did Furiosa beat Max in a fight in Fury Road?
The only time they fought against each other Max categorically won - having Furiosa on the ground and shooting three bullets around her head to subdue her.
@@TheAcharyaa Um, there's a scene you can watch where she knocks him down and takes his gun from him and tries to shoot him with it. It doesn't fire. It's ridiculous that she could overpower him.
It's funny how girlboss is seen as relatively a recent development but Chinese movies were doing this since the 60s. A Touch of Zen, Hap Ki Do, When Taekwondo Strikes had women kicking shite out of rooms full of men and, as a teen ager in the 70s, I loved this stuff. It's still great all these years later.

I’m not even opposed to Gibson returning (even if he is clearly a shithead), but thinking that he is box office gold is about a couple decades off the mark at this point.
But my sister insists that cinema still lacks representation and NEED more movies with women leading the way and saving everybody when she herself doesn't go to watch all of them and once in a while admits: "well, yeah, this one was bad".
My sister in law is like that. It's just programming. It's an idea that gets pushed on women non-stop, to the point where a lot of us just adopt it as a truth without really examining it, nor truly caring about it.
One of the those who believes things they read on Twitter. How they can survive from day to day is a mystery.
That doesn't make sense to me. This push of females into the action films in post me-too Hollywood is ridiculous. Meanwhile, other women like myself have other things to do and when I want an action film, I will rather rewatch something like Predator or Mission Impossible. Those are entertaining films. Nowadays, the best Hollywood can do is Prey. Hard pass.
Yep. I bounced on it because as a dude, I didn't want to waste time on another girlboss movie. They're usually all the same. Besides didn't the new female audience fill in for our absence? I was told it would.
I don't know what they expect. We're sick of them taking male interested franchises, injecting a girl boss, then crying that the audience is the problem for not going to see it. Men are simple wheb it comes to entertainment. We want violence, testosterone, beautiful women, and a good story. How many times do we have to reject the girl boss?

The iron wasn't cold. The iron was so rusted it crumbled into dust.
"Max was only ever a peripheral character even in his own movies. He wasn't the main focus." - someone somewhere, maybe
Well that’s kind of true, you follow goose a lot during the first act of mad max, then you follow his wife and kid for a while. And then every other movie he’s an outlier, the main plot and conflict of the movie is something that doesn’t involve him and not his problem. In many ways he’s not a point of view character.
I mean yea someone somewhere is talking sense and facts, thats usually how that goes.
Fury road was Furiosa as the main lead. It’s wasn’t a Mad Max movie. Why not make Romantic comedies for female audience and action for male?
I'm guessing women that liked the original trilogy weren't there for the violence and grit but a blue eyed handsome Australian.
The studio's "reasoning" was 1. The men will show up regardless, and 2. The women will show up for Chris Hemsworth. That was the level of "thoughtful analysis" they put into greenlighting this obvious dud. But anyone with half a brain can see that the audience doesn't work that way. The men chose to find something else they would actually enjoy after seeing what it was about (basically, an angry waif who was going to hate and kill men). And the women realized that Chris was the villain, not the star, and weren't interested. I mean, this entertainment demographic stuff isn't rocket science FFS.
@@RoryMitchell00 Anyone who didn't see it thinking it's about some angry waif killing men missed the entire point of the film. Furiosa is amazing and anyone walking away thinking otherwise has terrible taste in films.

Well, then I think you're missing the entire point here, because you aren't seeing what's _not_ happening in all of these films. And people have begun to recognize the pattern of those continued absences, and they're sick and tired of it. If this were just *one* film that lacked those humanizing features, then yeah, people could accept it on its own merits. However, it's not, and so they don't.

COMMENT OF THE YEAR
In the words of It's a Gundam, Furiosa girl-bossed too close to the sun
Its a Mad Max movie without Mad Max. It’s like making a James Bond movie without James Bond, or Halloween without Michael Myers.
Plus, it’s a prequel about a character that didn’t need a prequel, if you saw Fury Road you already knew her backstory.
It also doesn’t help that I think people everywhere and bored with female centric reboots of traditionally male franchises.
Like a hamberger with no meat.
Usual copy & paste comment with zero actual thought.
It’s people like you that can’t get past the title. Halloween III is a great 80s horror movie and Furiosa was also very good.
No, it's Furiosa
@@MrPiestro Then if it's good, USE AN APPROPRIATE TITLE, and stop using click bait, or leaching out of previews IP's. What happened for Furiosa, is people not going to see it BECAUSE of the title. If they want to make money, they have to get rid of that monstrous habit. I have to admit tough, I have my popcorn, my Champaign, my chair, my hot dogs, my bonfire and I'm HIGLHY amused by the death of Hollywood. WAY MORE entertaining then any movies they made past 2016. The last movie I really loved was BR 2049.
imagine making a movie with the main character in the title, not having them in the movie.. AND in interviews you state you can make a whole movie line up without the main character in it. 💀
Honestly if you just left it at Furiosa, maybe there's a better shot.
And Hollywood's recent reputation with movies, the message strong women lectures the audience
the thing where Hollywood are complete hypocrites here is that they simply won't make anything *Original* for a Female Lead; if they did and it was written well, AS IN IF such a original Female character was nothing like Brie Larson's annoying AF Cap Marvel, OR Phoebe Waller-Bridge and her annoying AF Helena character in Indy 5.
this is the huge problem, these woke writers in Hollywood today just keep writing all these Female versions of iconic characters to deliberately be antagonizing "Boss Ladies"; and there's nothing fun about watching characters like that.
If they were just "badass" fun, like theron in "Atomic Blonde" or even Anna DeAmas in no time to die, she was pretty much the best character in that movie because she was beautiful, feisty, kickass and just Fun! She wasn't running Bond down, or trying so very hard to put him in his place (unlike Nomi).
Women need to be just women, and quit telling men how strong you are which is a fallacy anyway. Just let things play out naturally.
I’m gonna be honest, I don’t get the whole ‘why was max not in the movie’ argument. I’m sorry, but it says in big bold letters ‘Furiosa’, and was marketed as a prequel about Furiosa. The whole ‘Mad Max Saga’ is exactly what it is, a story that takes place in the Mad Max universe. A lot of the other arguments have validity, like the Hollywood hating on its own audience and the fact that shits just so expensive now, but this one seems the weakest imo.
People are tired of Hollywood trying to reshape society in their stylized image.
A movie about a side character with an actress who isn’t a big movie star didn’t do well? Are we surprised?

I suspect lots of her acting ability is as similarly locked up as her looks, and I'm sure of that if she's a modern 'girl boss', since GB's are never allowed human emotions other than anger or smugness. Then there's poor Chris Helmsworth. How much his acting career has been derailed due to having to play so many woke and comedic(but it's only his manliness or heterosexuality being made fun of) harmless male characters has crippled his acting career. Girl flop is the new genre of movies
i find it hard to believe the lack of Max had anything to do with this flopping. Max was basically a side character in Fury Road. He spent half the movie in a mask strapped to the front of a vehicle. And before that, the last Mad Max movie was in the 80s. I highly doubt so many of the people who saw and liked Fury Road were so attached to the Max character that they would skip out on a Max-less Max movie.
I think people are severely underestimating Max's role in that movie. You might as well say that the War Pup (war dog?) character is "the main character" or "stole the spotlight" since he's in the movie so much and has such a strong character arc.
Max is obviously the main character, and NOTHING gets done without him. Everyone else is an obstacle.
When George Miller first mentioned "Furiosa" right after "Fury Road" was released, I thought: "What for???"
With all that happened from that time I'm not surprised with the result in the least.
Hollywood has pushed so many poorly written movies under the cover of insulting anyone who doesn't go see it as some variety of ist or phobe that people just assume that politically correct characters headlining mean it's going to be poorly made. The creatives haven't had to bother working on tight engaging stories so long as their script checks the correct ideopolitical messaging boxes that they don't bother, and the audiences are tired of it.
Classic 80s movies had more real diversity then what is being done now
I don't think it's the movie itself that is the issue. The industry surrounding it has unintentionally set it up to fail. Across the board, box office revenue is down. Every week, there seems to be a new huge flop. General audiences just aren't interested in going to the cinema as much as they used to be even 5 years ago.
The lockdown taught people they can get along just fine staying at home and watching movies on their TVs/tablets/phones. We are in a global recession and a major cost of living crisis, so many people are tightening their belts on luxuries so they can afford the basic necessities. And probably the biggest factor is Hollywood's output in the last several years has been bottom of the barrel trash.
Mix those together and you have the recipe for people losing confidence in the Hollywood system. Not even talking about the ticket/concession prices and inconsiderate people who can't just turn off their phones during a movie.
The only way to turn things around is for the studios to start making good movies consistently that will regain audience trust. But, with the state of the corporate thinking that runs Hollywood, that is impossible.
yet if theyd announced Mel Gibson is back as Mad Max, youd go see that wouldnt you ?
@@awavey Yeah, probably. But Gibson is forever an exile from big Hollywood. They don't shun him like they used to, even after years of good behaviour and apologies on his part, but I don't think any studio will ever support a major project with him involved. you see, they could not, there is no Mad Max in this one, if they started with this one, there would have been no hook, and there would have been no "bait and switch", but there was in Fury Road.
I saw Fury Road because it was a new Mad Max movie and with Tom Hardy at that! I was excited about a new series of Max movies, but my excitement died in Fury Road when I realized that Max was a side character. I'm a fan of Max's, not of his world or "extended" universe, his character gave it color. I don't know if this movie is good or bad, just that I'm not watching it.
I truly believe the reason director George Miller hasn't done another Mad Max centric movie is probably because of Tom Hardy. According to that BTS book about the making of Fury Road, it sounds like Miller and Hardy also didnt get along at all, alongside Hardt and Therons on set fueds
Time is running out. Hollywood needs to learn pretty damn quick to serve the public not Larry Fink.
I'm under the impression that Hollywood repeats the same thing over again, expecting better results.

@@michaelheavener6877 Saw it, do you understand what collateral damage means ?
Agreed. I’m becoming more convinced that if Alien or Terminator came out now it would be rejected. that’s a shame because we need to reward stories that are focused on storytelling and not politics and social change. I think George wants to build up his world. The movie while not ideal character focus for fans is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately we are seeing our immune response to woke culture overcorrect and it’s hurting an excellent lore building entry in the Mad Max wasteland world.
Go watch it not at girl boss
I watched Mad Max when it originally came out. Had a great black and white photo of Mel Gibson on my locker at work. Hollywood wants to force women to watch what they want them to watch, not what women like to watch. Bro just say you get no pussy
I think you might be conflating two very different things. The problematic films of the last ten years aren't problematic because they are "female led". They're problematic because they are led by "girl bosses" or "Mary Sues", neither of which Ripley or Connor were at all. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a strong female protagonist. Nothing. It's just that typically that's not the shit that's been shoveled our way for a while now.
Furiosa isn't a "girl boss", even if there might be a scene or two that would make you think "You might be tough, but you can still feel pain. Why aren't you showing it?".
