Kava has sedative or at least anti-anxiety effects, not a stim. Ginseng should be avoided by people with internal heat symptoms (high percentage of western population), best avoid regular use until over 50 years of age due to effects on hormones. Also coffee is fine as long as you don't drink more than you can handle (around 4 cups), one becomes immune to the diuretic effects overtime. I eat Tulsi basil from my garden often & it has a relaxing effect, not stimulant. Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) would have to be the most pleasant stimulant I have come across, easy to grow & has reverse tolerance effects (stronger the longer you use it) like Kava has. Only problem with Kanna is if you don't grow your own it can be hard to find effective material. Kanna plants younger that 3 years old don't have effects. A few Haw-berries, half a cinnamon stick ground up with coffee make a excellent stimulant.
Gotu kola combined with Yarrow, Cinnamon, Haw-berries as a tea is a good for cycling off caffeine. Moringa gives all day energy.

How can ginseng affect your hormones over 50? I thought it was more useful for older people. But maybe a problem for someone with high blood pressure.

According to what I studied, Ginseng is good to devitalized adult people. But in terms of Ayurveda, it's not ideal for pitta persons, but useful for some vāta and kapha types. Is not so easy to prescribe some herbs and plants. It needs lot of experience.
