      Yeah. This guys videos single-handedly inspired me to take into consideration, more realistic approaches to weapon handling in my fantasy book.
      I’m still pretty vague about describing a “barrage” of attacks, but if it ever got animated I’ve been having it in my head too. It’d be awesome to have more physical stuff to examine from the master himself!
      I have one scene where the MC gets into a locked sword stance with one of the main villains, he ends up swinging out his opponents blade and switching to a half blade technique, stabbing through his opponents armor gaps. Never would have thought about that before lol.

    Polearm master Feat: You gain the following benefits:
    When you take the Attack action and attack with only a glaive, halberd, quarterstaff, or spear, you can use a bonus action to make a melee attack with the opposite end of the weapon. This attack uses the same ability modifier as the primary attack. The weapon's damage die for this attack is a d4, and it deals bludgeoning damage.
    While you are wielding a glaive, halberd, pike, quarterstaff, or spear, other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter the reach you have with that weapon.

    • @tpockett3676
      @tpockett3676 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    It's always interesting to see the natural way to use a halberd kind of coming forth. Hold it out in front, keep it mobile, poke mostly, occasionally chop. These practice ones also really undersell the hooking parts of it because the hooking bits have to be pretty padded, while on a real halberd or billhook, those hooks are pretty thin and sharp, really good for tangling up someone's weapon so you can follow up or leave him exposed for someone else.
    You can also do really good push cuts with a halberd. Even if you miss the thrust, the axe head could still connect and cut, either on the way in or on the way out.

    Honestly I’ve always been a little fascinated by the halberd. I see a lot of fantasy interpretations that I don’t like, but I’ve always thought it was a great weapon for any fighter type character.
    Maybe that’s just because most of my experience with hand to hand weapon training was with a bayonet in the marines, but I see some halberd techniques and can’t help but harken them back to some of the strikes they taught me.
    But I’m rambling now, I just think Halberds are criminally underutilized in fantasy.

    • @PhyreI3ird
      @PhyreI3ird 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Same!! They're kind of the ultimate medieval weapon imo. Able to chop like an axe with better reach, or stab like a spear with better control/defensive opportunities.
      Plus there's something weirdly kind of noble looking about a lot of the movements and the profile of the weapon.
      It should absolutely be used more in medieval fantasy, 100%

    • @raziyatheseeker
      @raziyatheseeker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can see that with bayonets! Especially with older rifles and muskets, it basically turned one's longarm into a spear. It's weird that Western fantasy seems to sleep on polearms for maces, where Eastern fantasy does that in reverse. Halberds are incredibly versatile weapons and that aside, there's something just plain regal about the fancier historical ones. Heck, the humbler ones like Skall and his buddy's practice versions are still "handsome", for a lack of a term thereof.

    How does it feel to switch your lead hand? I know hardly anything about fighting with polearms, but I've always been curious about which grip feels more natural or comfortable, a left-hand lead or a right-hand lead. Right hand lead feels like something I would use for chopping or striking, probably because it is how one naturally holds a sword or two-handed axe. But for thrusting, left hand makes sense to me because that is how I, as a right-handed person, typically use a rifle or shotgun.

      I feel like a left-hand lead can help, as most people are right-handed. I can't imagine it'd be easy to block a halberd with a arming sword. That said, I have little to no experience with polearms. Just learning and half-assed training with a staff.

      I don't have anyone to spar with either unfortunately. Thankfully I do Sabre, which can be done alone up to a certain point (such as drilling footwork, memorizing cuts, exercising the cuts, etc.)
      But I can't do other forms of combat like halberd, dagger, sword and buckler, longsword, or spear, as most of those require a partner

    I was thinking of just taking the axe head off and throw it at the sucker. :D
    Jokes aside seeing this makes me wanna get my own halberd and mess with it, one day >:3.

    For the people saying that this is halberd fighting I have to disagree. Too short to be halberds from what I know, these are much more like poleaxes.

      The weapon’s head seems around user eye level to me, so that definitely fits the upper range of poleaxe lengths. The head pretty clearly looks to represent a halberd head though, certainly more than a poleaxe head. Are there no halberds this length on the shorter end of the spectrum? My thought is that these would be undersized halberds to use in formation on the battlefield, but they might work well for fancy bodyguards or something. This also makes more sense for the bigger sweeping motions, which wouldn’t work as well in a tight formation.

    One thing i don't know is, are those practice weapons of the same weight as real ones?
    If so, then with a halberd you can be pretty agile!
    I was going to use the movements for my drawings, and i was questioning if those movements were accurate
