  • It's difficult to give a visual impression of how different swords handle, but I figured I'd give it a try and talk a bit about the dynamics of a European longsword compared to two-handed montante / zweihander, Chinese jian, Japanese katana, and nodachi. All according to my personal, subjective experience of course.

    4:24 The term you're looking for here is moment of inertia. It could also be described as the "heft" of the blade. The longsword in this case feels "lighter" because it's easier to rotate - it has slightly more mass, but it's closer to the centre of gravity so it requires less torque from your hand when you move it around, which means it's easier to get moving and to redirect the blade. The Japanese blade has less mass overall, but it's distributed further from the centre of gravity and that makes it require more torque to get it rotating, and correspondingly it takes more torque to halt the movement (which can be useful because the blade has more stored energy to transfer when it strikes a target).
    The "chopping" movement you do is a good test for the blade's total moment of inertia, but like you observed, a lighter blade can have heavier moment of inertia and thus "feel heavier". If you want to test for weight alone, you need to eliminate any rotation since that causes the "heft" of the weapon (or moment of inertia) to mess with your perception of weight. Although, with the weapons being so close to each other, it would be difficult to tell which weighs more anyway, since humans typically have one hand stronger than the other and we are really bad at making objective measurements.

    • @BeamMonsterZeus
      @BeamMonsterZeus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This aligns well with my own comment about how he perceives the balance. I basically said that he should do more Katana/Tachi/Odachi exclusive drills to figure out where his own core strength needs to be distributed. To really appreciate Eastern techniques, you have to recognize the differences between them and European techniques. My own training blade arsenal consists of two Western style weapons and two Eastern style, and I definitely have to agree with your comment here.

    • @Sa1d1n
      @Sa1d1n 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm slightly confused about your use of CoG here. The way you wrote it makes no sense to me, as you would always have more mass closer to the CoG (integral of mass distribution). Wouldn't a more accurate description be that, for the longsword, your CoG is closer to the point of rotation? Because your point of rotation is NOT the CoG. Longsword has a CoG close to the hilt, making it easier to rotate (less torque required, as you pointed out). Apart from that, spot on - the physics checks out.

    • @HerraTohtori
      @HerraTohtori 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Sa1d1n Correct, I simplified things a little bit and used the definition of moment of inertia for a freely rotating object (which always rotates about its centre of gravity, or centre of mass if you prefer).
      For objects where the centre of rotation is displaced from its CoG, the moment of inertia is indeed calculated based on the centre of rotation. The centre of mass being more distant from centre of rotation does typically produce a more "hefty" weapon, but the overall mass and mass distribution can still produce a varying amount of moment of inertia for the weapon.
      For the complete definition of moment of inertia, each point mass in the object has moment of inertia that is equal to I = m r^2, where m is the point mass and r is the distance from centre of rotation. If you take a geometric shape and integrate over it, you can sum together all the infinitesimal point masses that make up the object, and the total sum is the object's total moment of inertia. For complex objects, this can get complicated.

    With regards to armor- people also don't appreciate how strong a fit human is. Even the ridiculous 50kg jousting armor is not that far above the carry Weight of a modern infantry unit, some even being above that. And that's with the ability to walk many miles with it, not sitting on a horse being ridden about.

      i suggest its not a lack of "appreciation", but much more literally a lack of relevant experience. They don't UNDERSTAND what it feels like to BE as fit as modern fit humans. They can't visualize the sensations a strong person experiences when they move things. They see words, they see more words, and they don't know those two words can't be put together, so they put them together, and come up with a misconception. But unless they can have a tactile experience actually feeling what it feels like to be however strong, they may never really be able to visualize one thing or another that keeps popping up as a disagreement.

      I don't know if it's that. I think people don't appreciate what 50lbs properly balanced across your body like infantry gear and armor are because nobody except relatively insular groups of people do it nowadays. It's a lot like picking up a 150lb person versus a 150lb block of iron. The person is shockingly easy to pick up because you naturally and progressively balance the load as you're doing the lift. But a block of iron? You just gotta use horsepower. People envision carrying a human to be a similar workload, but it's completely different.

    Physical strength and dexterity absolutely plays a huge role, of course your movement isn't ''slow'' but looking at sword fights from a historical perspective you have to realize people trained a lot more and have a different life style, that absolutely plays a role in physical fitness and overall muscle activity. Those who study HEMA AND do workouts will often comment on how big of an impact physical fitness has on sword handling.
    Skill and techniques definitely matters but they alone are not enough.
    Just like boxing, in the world of boxing technique & timing is king, but you absolutely need adequate strength & speed (basically train, train, train) to execute said technique & timing better than your opponent, especially in a competitive environment. In the world of sword fights, it would be a life & death situation.
    The truth is, everyone's sword look fast during a swing, but the actual speed is different. Just like every boxer's punch look fast, but they are not all the same, that difference in speed, it matters.
    It's not just the speed of the sword itself, but the speed of your overall body movement like hip turn & foot work etc. If we both swing our sword at the same speed but I moved my legs faster and transition my movement better then you will die first, it's that simple.
    Another point is that most people who study sword arts are not professionals, many of them aren't even good sport (being brutally honest here) so the overall intensity and competitiveness in this field isn't even close to the real thing back then.
    It's like comparing a local boxing gym/club to actual professional boxing.
    Medieval knights and Landsknechts are not super humans, but compared to modern human's physique & life style, they might as well be. The sword community sometimes seriously underestimate athleticism in sword fights as if it's not a sport.
    The fact is, if you put two ''sword masters'' toe to toe, one is out of shape, the other is athletic. The athletic one will absolutely destroy the out of shape one 10 times out of 10. It's not even a debate.
    If you're just practicing casually, occasionally sparring with a buddy or cutting up some tatami then of course physique doesn't matter too much as long as you know how to swing a sword properly, but historically that's is absolutely not the case. Swords were weapons, people train with them like their life depended on it.

      As a brute, if I am to wield a sword I'd much rather use a one-handed one. Why? Because I'm not dextrous enough to put the proper force in 2-handing and would probably lose force for it (the only cut I'm even close to good at is a simple cut from that stance where you hold the sword parallel to the ground and by your side, idk how to explain it it's what you see samurais do when they don't hold it in front of themselves). So I'd much rather grab a single-handed light sword that lets me make the most out of my strength to strike fast and as hard as possible, and my off-hand is free for amything from a shield to a dagger to stab between the plates to plain empty for grappling. Or grabbing throwables. If I am to use both hands, I'd rather it be with a weapon that guides my attack, like a warhammer, a polearm or a two-handed axe (wait did those actually exist or are they just fantasy stuff?).

    Another great vid! I love the practical approach of your content.
    A thought regarding the long grips of Japanese swords: anecdotally, I've been told that the original practitioners generally didn't grip all the way at the back either. However, in Japan, possession of horses was a strong point of difference between the "haves" and the "have nots," since there was just not as much land available to raise them. As with most places and times, a handful of mounted combatants (usually the nobility) were often able to deal with a large number of foot soldiers. To help restore the balance, these long-gripped swords were developed. In the face of a charging horse, where one usually only had to worry about an attack or two from the passing rider, one would grip farther back along the handle - sacrificing a degree of speed and defense for greater leverage in the strike and (hopefully) disabling the mount.
    Hypothetically, it could also be used for "great cuts" (a strong blow that would throw off the opponent's balance and create an opening) before returning to a mid-grip; for penetrating the laquer-and-cloth armour of (some) samurai; or for cleaner beheadings in ritual/judicial context - however, I suspect that these latter are more romanticization than intended purpose.
    By the bye: a longer grip also aids opponents with weaker forearm strength - such as younger fighters or the later (not strictly militant) nobility. One can see this taken to the extreme in the naginata - which is as much spear as sword, and is said to have been the weapon of choice when women (who were almost never focused combatants) were forced to fight.
    No historical referencing on any of this, of course - just some things I've heard thrown about - but the leverage thing seems to hold up in practice.

      @@drawmelikeoneofyourfrenchg3311 it's actually a bit different than longswords. As Skallagrim has said, use big sweeping cuts and constant momentum as you would with something like a two-handed axe. Of course, the balance is different, but it's still pretty hefty for a sword.
      There are actually videos around here where they demonstrate how greatswords are used. They don't make use of jerky movements, but rather long but fast sweeping motions.

    One thing about that two handed Han Jian you were using: you don't necessarily need to keep your rear hand towards the pommel. Apparently your grip is supposed to change while using it: closer together for more quick, nimble movements, and further apart for heavier cuts. So you're not really "doing it wrong" if you want to bring your hands closer together to speed up your movement and make your attacks more dexterous.
    I couldn't help but chuckle when you were talking about the sparring gear...

    This is exactly right skall. Background and training is important to how you handle something. A German longswords'Man is going to find a nodachi uncomfortable just as much as a kendo practitioner would find any long sword uncomfortable. It's what I argue with people about machetes all the time. There are many fanboys of Filipino style and Indian style machetes saying Latin machetes are uncomfortable and I get frustrated because they don't understand that they need to use a different technique.

    Thanks for these videos, Skal. I think the majority of the time I see visual fiction show fast-moving swords is when they're - you guessed it - katanas! For the most part, a fast sword is only really shown to reveal how badass a character is rather than exploring how it's the "norm" (and 'fast' being a loose term for faster than the heavy lunges portrayed).
    Side note - You've explained about your issues with the weight. Is it possible for you to create a sword practice routine to be the basis of your exercising? I can imagine that the sword drills plus some running/jogging just might do a job and that way you're improving your mechanics with the things you love while getting healthy. Just a thought.

    • @MillerJustinFS
      @MillerJustinFS 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the most part, losing weight is more about diet than exercise. The most average calorie consumption per day is 2000. To burn an extra 1000 calories a day is going to take you running for a full hour. That's a lot of exercise that most people are not going to be able to keep up with on a daily basis. On the other hand, a burger combo from a fast food joint is a thousand calories on its own. So, the easiest way to lose weight is to focus on portion control and being conscious of the food you're consuming. There's a reddit devoted to 1800 and 1200 calories per day with dozens of different meal ideas, that's the best place I've seen for good inspiration.

    • @morlath4767
      @morlath4767 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MillerJustinFS While I do understand this, a "diet" alone doesn't always help people when it comes to being fit. Even with a fully varied meal plan, going by pure calorie intake doesn't do much good if someone is struggling with the mental side of getting and staying a healthy weight for them.
      Like someone who has a mountain of debt and is having to put all their spare cash into paying it down. Sure, they might be getting themselves out of a hole but they're mentally going to feel like crap because they have "nothing" to show for it. Especially if they sometimes slip up and spend (eat) things outside of what's budgeted.
      Physical fitness is essentially getting a side-job. Someone like Skal (who admits to having issues "sticking a course") can focus on the benefits of the fitness regime (the extra income) with the diet (money plan) as a tacked-on annoyance. It doesn't matter if the physical training/extra job merely covers any diet/payment plan wagon fall offs, the person is going to mentally feel as though they're achieving things to a greater intensity because they have something "tangible" they can control - Stamina increase, speed, able to buy one-offs yet still meet the payment plan.
      Having diets and sticking with them as the only focus of losing weight or being healthy just isn't for everyone. We aren't all wired that way.

    Re. The hilt length of the longer nihonto like sword, there is a length of hilt beyond which you start using the sword more like a nagamaki.
    That holds true in general for longish weapons. Once the hand spacing exceeds a certain distance (specific to the individual), performing actions where the hands exchange as they would in many longsword actions becomes pretty awkward and or slow.
    The advantage with a wide spaced grip is you can use larger, heavier, longer weapons, and exercise more leverage with them. Trying to use them like a long sword invites injury.

    Nitpick about speed. The blade tip of a sword will move faster than the hands by a factor of the ratio between the blade length and the hand spacing. So it's very possible for a sword to move faster than empty hands, however, the speed of empty hands is still the limiting factor that strength can bring you closer to but not exceed.

    • @Candlemancer
      @Candlemancer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That... is basically what he said. Obviously the tip will be going quicker than the hands, it's covering a greater distance in, by definition, the same amount of time. What he was saying is that how fast you can *swing* the sword is limited by how fast you can move your arms.
